The post Explore T.O. Fuller State Park appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>State parks are probably among humanity’s greatest cultural developments, and what better way to enjoy something than to ensure that it’s preserved for future generations that might want to relive the experience? T.O. Fuller, however, also adds to the novelty by giving visitors a chance to walk in the footsteps of history.
T.O. Fuller State Park was only the second U.S. state park that admitted African Americans, and its facilities were actually built to cater to African Americans. While building the park, workers discovered the Chucalissa site — a complex of mounds, villages and plazas that were home to Mississippian native peoples thousands of years ago.
The modern park took its name from Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, a pioneering leader who spent decades fighting for equality and representation at a time when disparity was the rule of law. Today, anyone can enjoy hiking, camping, sports or educational activities on the grounds, and since it’s the only state park within Memphis city limits, it’s one of the best local opportunities to get outdoors.
How do Memphian nature lovers take advantage of this amazing park? With more than 1,100 acres to explore, there’s no shortage of adventures to tackle:
Get acquainted with the lifestyle of those who came to Memphis long before you. This is a great starting point to explore T.O. Fuller — you can explore hands-on archeology with your kids, learn more about the native plant and animal species that call the park home, or see one of the East Coast’s best-preserved prehistoric settlements.
A network of well-maintained trails weaves through T.O. Fuller, so it’s the ideal place for a casual walk or intense run. Thanks to the heavily forested surroundings, it’s easy to put the urban hustle on pause for a moment as you reconnect with yourself, nature or your dog. Most of the trails here are easy to moderate, so take your time and enjoy the shade.
Whether you prefer roughing it or relaxing in a recreational vehicle, T.O. Fuller State Park accommodates. For those who prefer creature comforts, about $35 will get you laundry and bathhouse access, power, a grill site and other modern conveniences.
From playing tennis and watching migratory birds to discovering unequaled vistas or cooling off with a summer swim, T.O. Fuller is a great example of how Memphis always has something to offer. Whether you’ve made this city your home or are just passing through, this spot should definitely make it onto your itinerary.

Memphis is a city you truly need to see to believe. While the best way to do this is to actually visit our great city, we want to highlight some of what you can expect on such a visit. That is why we wanted to showcase some amazing photos that will make you want to visit Memphis as soon as possible.
Memphis is a beautiful city at all times of day. But here is a picture of the city at dawn, while many of the residents are still asleep, and the city itself is just waking up. It highlights the fact that Memphis isn’t just a large city. There’s plenty of park space surrounding the city. It also has beautiful architecture and a great riverwalk. There truly is something for everyone here in Memphis.
Downtown Memphis isn’t all tall skyscrapers and massive buildings. As you can see from the photograph, it has a very down-to-earth feel, from its cobblestone drive to the locally owned restaurants, bars, music joints, and clothing shops. This is what America used to look like just a few decades ago, but many cities abandoned this look in favor of what was new and shiny. In Memphis, you’ll experience an incredible blast from the past while at the same time taking in what truly helps make the city incredible.

Memphis is full of quirks. It’s unique in just about every way. There’s a reason this area of the city was voted as one of the best streets to walk in the whole country. The vibrant signs are all different and each represents a locally owned business. You’re not going to find a Tater Red’s anywhere else. Nor are you going to take in the same experience anywhere else as you do at BB King’s Blues Club. This blues guitar legend opened up the club and—while the man himself may no longer be around—his music lives on forever. So whether you’re interested in just walking the street or you want to stop in for world-class culture, you’ll never find anything else like what you’ll discover in Memphis.
The city of Memphis is an incredible destination. Whether visiting for pleasure or moving to the city for good, you’ll always find something new and exciting to take in. While the best way to experience the city is to visit it first hand, these were only some of the many amazing photographs that highlight just how special a place Memphis is.

]]>The post ServiceMaster is bringing a brighter future to Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>ServiceMaster is a global holdings corporation that owns a number of small businesses. Some of the best-known businesses it operates include Furniture Medic, Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Restore, Terminix, Terminix Commercial and AmeriSpec (to name a few).
The vast majority of businesses ServiceMaster runs focus on pest control, janitorial services (both commercial- and residential-based), plus furniture repair and disaster response. Because these needs are desired throughout the United States, ServiceMaster has managed to expand its business operations to include 13,000 corporate employees, plus 33,000 additional independent employees. As of 2015, the company brought in $2.59 billion in revenue.
For the better part of the company’s history, it called the Chicago suburbs of Downers Grove home. However, as the business expanded, so too did the office of operations for the smaller companies ServiceMaster owned. In order to centrally locate itself and bring the smaller companies together, ServiceMaster moved its main office to Memphis.
More recently, ServiceMaster moved away from East Memphis into Peabody Place, located in downtown Memphis. The company first started the move in 2016 and completed it in 2018. With its headquarters now centrally located in the heart of Memphis, it’s looking to become a major face within the city.
Peabody Place first took shape in downtown Memphis back in 1993. Eventually, though, smaller businesses moved out of the building, leaving it all but vacant in downtown Memphis. ServiceMaster saw the opportunity to rejuvenate this area of downtown while also better positioning itself within the city. The enclosed mall at Peabody Place has a total of 300,000 square feet, giving the company and all of its smaller branches plenty of space to expand.
The building is also famous for having, in extremely large letters on the roof, “come downtown and play,” which is visible from the air and can be seen if using the Google Earth application (it also appears when using the map mode of Google Maps and driving downtown).
Downtown Memphis has seen a drastic uptick in renovations and new construction in recent years. Beyond ServiceMaster bringing its headquarters to downtown, the city itself has experienced both current and planned development valued at $15 billion.
The planned development will not only bring in new development and help beautify the downtown area, but important jobs and new opportunities for current residents. And this momentum will only continue.

And even if you’re not a singer, why not come on out with your friends and support their musical talent? Because even though we can’t all sing in tune, we can all have fun.

If there’s one thing that’s better than karaoke on a Monday night, it’s happy hour combined with karaoke. At Huey’s Southaven, you can enjoy happy hour specials until 10 p.m. So whether you’re hungry, thirsty or just want to warm up your vocal cords, there really is something for everyone at Huey’s every Monday night.

Dinner to Die For
There’s a reason why Huey’s has been going strong for almost 50 years. It’s not just the karaoke and the drink specials. It’s also the amazing food you’ll find here. ]]>Saucy Chicken, a fast-casual restaurant offering traditional Southern cuisine, is now open in Crosstown Concourse, Suite 137, in the former Mama Gaia’s space.
Following the closure of Mama Gaia inside the Concourse, many believed the space would go vacant for some time. After all, it takes the right fit for a new restaurant to move into the opening left by a previous restaurant. However, Saucy Chicken has swooped in and made it its own. And for chicken lovers out there, this may be one of the best new chicken destinations in all of Memphis.
Saucy Chicken proves it is all about chicken, but that there is a kind of chicken for everyone. Yes, there are the delicious chicken wings, which are great for ordering and going back home to enjoy while watching your favorite sporting event, but there are so many other chicken options available.
You can opt for a chicken sandwich, made with many of the same spices and seasonings as with the wings but on a chicken breast. You can also go sauce-free if you’d rather enjoy the perfectly cooked breast instead. Or you can have it served over a bed of romaine lettuce and all the fixings of a beautifully delicious salad. If there is a kind of chicken you enjoy, chances are Saucy Chicken makes it.
But here’s the thing: You don’t need to be a chicken lover to enjoy Saucy Chicken. In fact, there are plenty of dining options. The deep-fried shrimp are crispy yet moist, plus there are sandwich options that do not simply revolve around freshly prepared chicken breasts. You can opt for lunch meat chicken or turkey, or you can go with one of the other sandwich options.
There are also some of the best sides served up in the Concourse. If you’ve been craving hush puppies, you’ll find them right here. You’ll also find potato salad so good you’ll want to eat it both as a side and on top of your sandwich. The french fries are made with a special seasoning that gives each bite just enough crispy tang, spice and sweetness.
For a restaurant to make it in Memphis, it needs to be good. When a city is known for incredible food, it has a way of pushing out those that do not live up to what restaurant-goers expect. This restaurant came up in September of 2018 and has made a name for itself. If you haven’t had Saucy Chicken before, you owe it to yourself to try it out. So whether you’re a chicken fan or just hungry for a great-tasting lunch, head on over to the concourse and discover why Memphis Business Journal has been raving about Saucy Chicken.

]]>The post Travel Channel said Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>In a recent article, the Travel Channel stated that Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!
With things like our world-famous barbeque, our impact on the civil rights movement, and our works of art, it’s no wonder why we are on their radar.
Memphis is a cultural melting pot in the South. It’s also an easy destination to travel to, no matter where you might be coming from. Whether you’re flying from New York or driving down from Indianapolis, it’s easy to visit, which is one of the reasons why it is such a hot destination.
Travel Channel highlighted a number of reasons why Memphis is such an excellent travel destination for this summer. Why? Because there’s something for everyone to do, no matter the age.
Summer is the perfect time for families to get out and travel with school no longer in session. Because of this, the perfect destination needs to have activities for children of all ages. Yes, you’ll find plenty of cultural sights for educational purposes, and what child doesn’t love some sticky, messy BBQ? But beyond all of this, there are fun outing activities that both you and your children will love.
There’s no limit to the activities you and your family can take in. With the hundreds of possible southern locations Travel Channel could have selected as its hottest southern travel destination, the reason it picked Memphis was because of these limitless activities.
You can visit the River Line Trail, which was just recently renovated and finished. With kid-friendly activities along the water, fun tree houses, a 30-acre Tom Lee Park, plus festivals taking place throughout the summer, this is a prime destination when you want to get outside, take in the water, and enjoy your time with your family.
Are you an Elvis fan? Even if you were born after the King of Rock passed on, you’ve likely heard his music and know just how important he was to moving the music scene around the world forward. Well, you owe it to yourself to discover Graceland. While in Memphis you can visit the King’s music room, and a fan favorite “Jungle Room,” which is the literal definition of a Man Cave. Just make sure to pick up the Elvis favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich (which is, naturally, deep friend).
Make Your Own Memphis Memories
We could list out the hundreds of reasons why you should come to visit Memphis. From the food to the music to the culture to the festivals. But that takes some of the fun out of discovering Memphis for yourself. Travel Channel doesn’t just pick destinations on a whim. After all, it has television advertisements to sell, so it won’t make up random spots. It does its research and it puts its best foot forward so you can take advantage of its advice.
All of that is why you shouldn’t just read a list of things to do in Memphis. You need to come, explore, and make your own Memphis memories.

]]>The post TripSavvy picks Memphis as the best overall destination for 2019! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Every year, TripSavvy selects a brand-new top destination for the year. To do this, the website combs through everything from the destination’s cultural impact and tours to the food options and potential activities a visitor can take part in. For 2019, TripSavvy selected Memphis as its overall top destination for visitors.
As a local, I have known Memphis to be a beautiful, inspiring city. There’s something to see and experience around every corner. In the last several years, all kinds of exciting constructions and opportunities have breathed new life into the city. Not all of these new opportunities are exclusively for locals though. There are plenty of destinations for visitors, which is exactly why TripSavvy selected Memphis as the top city to discover.
The travel website highlighted Crosstown Concourse as one addition to the city that it found attractive. Built in the old Sears distribution warehouse, the renovated space has over a dozen recently opened restaurants. It basically takes the concept of the classic food court and ratchets it up to a whole new level.
Railgarten received a mention as well, with its 1.5-acre playground for adults. If you haven’t been there before, it includes everything from a classic tiki bar to an ice cream parlor, a ping pong room and a stage for live performances — and it even has a sandbox for adults.
It’s more than just the new establishments that attracted TripSavvy to the city of Memphis though. It also mentioned the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. While this destination has received a bit of a renovation in recent years, it is a classic historical museum that plays an important role in the city.
The website brought to light all the outdoor elements that nature lovers can take advantage of in Memphis. There is the city zoo, which has a brand-new hippo exhibit. It also points to the bike paths that connect throughout much of the city. It’s even possible to ride over the Mississippi River.
Memphis is king of the mountain when it comes to 2019 travel, according to TripSavvy. But what other cities did the travel website highlight (and TripSavvy beat out)? Some of the most notable cities include London, Toronto, Los Angeles, Portland, Tokyo and San Antonio.
That’s a pretty impressive list — which makes Memphis taking the top spot all the more impressive.
All of this highlights what I, as well as most other locals, already know: The city of Memphis is alive and bursting with new activities and historical ventures to experience.

]]>The post 4th Annual Memphis Black Restaurant Week! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>This year’s Black Restaurant Week is scheduled for the week of March 3–9, 2019. Last year’s event included 11 black-owned restaurants that served 22 meals as either a two-course lunch or three-course dinner during the seven-day celebration of food. The event also helps lift the socio-economic status of the participating restaurants to bring much-needed notoriety and increase revenues.
Cynthia Daniels, who is the Chief Event Strategist for Memphis-based Cynthia Daniels and Company, created the event in 2016. She saw it as an opportunity to shine a light on the black-owned restaurants in the city. She also saw it as an opportunity to empower black-owned restaurants, attract new customers and help strengthen all of Memphis’s communities. Her desire to make sure that black-owned restaurants be included in the culinary options offered to residents and visitors gave birth to the first Black Restaurant Week event in 2016 and has continued to drive it into its fourth year.
Her company, Cynthia Daniels and Company, is an events planning and design company, which serves businesses in and around the Mid-South region. From 2017 onward, she has been involved in organizing various events, galas and other affairs. These events are specifically designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs in Memphis, providing a needed service to bring together and connect individuals for the betterment of the community as a whole.
If you don’t plan to attend any of the seven days of this culinary event, may we interest you in the above Peach Cobbler Nachos, scheduled to be served up by Chef Tam’s Underground Café. Located at 2299 Young Avenue in Memphis, this restaurant does Southern cooking!
Offerings from Chef Tam includes mac and cheese, dirty rice, yams, catfish and cheesy grits. These menu items alone should get the mouth watering for some down-home Southern comfort food. Memphis-born and raised Chef Fran Mosely will also be featured along with her specially designed desserts. She is the CEO and chef of HM Dessert Lounge, a dessert bar, and a personal chef.
The event offers a variety of two-course lunch for a fixed price of $15 a plate and a three-course dinner priced at $25. More information about the complete offerings, including restaurants and locations, will be forthcoming as the event approaches. Make plans to be in or near Memphis the week of March 3–9, 2019. You will be rewarded with some of the best food from those black-owned restaurateurs looking to establish themselves as part of Memphis’s growing dining scene!

Art Auction fundraiser.
Take a virtual walk online or an actual one downtown in search of the city’s famous murals, from “The Sound of Memphis” to “I Am a Man.” The downtown Memphis website provides details.
In the spring, Memphis College of Art, 1930 Poplar Ave., will host a series of talks about subjects including entrepreneurial blogging, fashion design, and maximizing social following on websites like Instagram.

Creativity and mentoring aid the success of all startups. The “Memphis Business Journal” provides a detailed list of local business incubators, including Emerge Memphis, which offers tenant space and technical assistance programs.
Mid-South Makers, 2804 Bartlett Road, is an organization that provides makerspace (aka “hackerspace”) for people who love to tinker and invent. It’s a good place to meet other makers, share ideas and collaborate on projects.
Check out Crosstown Arts Shared Art Making for access to shared art-making facilities and equipment in digital arts, music, woodworking, printmaking, and photography. This space is open to all types of artists – from professionals to hobbyists!
Love to sing? Perk up your pipes and maybe your picking skills at the Memphis Songwriters open mic nights. They’re held Monday through Thursday nights and Saturdays at coffee houses, restaurants and taverns throughout town.

]]>The post Love Barbecue? Here’s How to Make Memphis Style Ribs appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Good Memphis style ribs always start with smoked pork, either pulled or on the slab. If you want the meat to be tender and full of taste, let it smoke for several hours to bring out all of the flavors in the meat. It’s important to use the best cuts and the highest quality of meat possible. Good quality meat will ensure the taste is true to authentic Memphis style, even without the herbs and spices.
Dry rubs are just as popular as the different kinds of wet sauces that are used throughout Memphis. Dry rubs normally contain garlic, paprika, pepper, cumin and onions, as well as other herbs and spices. Memphis style barbecue sauce is made from ripe tomatoes, a variety of spices and just the right amount of vinegar to produce a thin sauce that’s tart and tangy with a hint of sweetness. It’s thin enough to drizzle over ribs coated with a dry rub or to sit beside a plate of pulled pork for use as a dipping sauce.
If you don’t have the time to cook, visit one of the many local bars or restaurants that offer Memphis style ribs. There’s quite the variety to choose from, and each of these dining spots offers ribs with a unique taste and flair. There are so many options, you could literally visit one or two a week and it would still take you over a year to sample them all.
If you’re in the mood for a good Memphis style barbecue recipe for your ribs, then ask around. Everyone either knows of a place that serves good ribs or has a recipe that you “just have to try!” Find a recipe that you like and do a little experimenting to make it your own. Who knows? You may end up creating the next best thing when it comes to good old Memphis style ribs!

]]>A space for space
Victoria Jones, Executive Director of The CLTV explains that when searching for a permanent location for the organization, it was important to choose a space that represented the black culture and the future of black art in Memphis. After viewing locations in other sects of the city such as Crosstown Concourse and Midtown, the team realized that the potential creative energy of the already thriving Orange Mound would allow The CLTV to provide a platform for the black community in its entirety. Positioned in South Memphis, Orange Mound is historically known for being the first community established for and by African Americans in the South, as well as being an essential region for the establishment and prosperity of black-owned businesses and culture. The neighborhood was designated a Preserve America Community in 2016 by First Lady Michelle Obama who described Orange Mound as a “treasured place in the American story.” The Preserve America Community award is an honor which recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. Today, the area features some of the highest civic pride and engagement in the city as new developments such as the Orange Mound Senior Center become established. The CLTV’s new space features a large open gallery in the front of the building with walls that already mount local black photography and art projects. In the back of the building, artists and students have access to a large workshop stocked with art supplies and an ample amount of space for freedom of creative expression. Currently, the organization consists of fourteen staff members who work entirely on a volunteer status for students and local artists in the community. The CLTV is continuing to prepare the new space for its grand public opening on January 11th, 2019.
Art gives people hope
The CLTV focuses on caring for themselves and each other differently. By giving black artists the tools to ethically engage in communities, the organization fights to shift cultural inequality through elevating a consistent spotlight on art within the black community. Jones states that the significance and importance of black culture are rooted throughout Memphis history and The CLTV team seeks to make that known by showcasing and cultivating black art.
“The wider our platform becomes, the more black artists become involved and the louder their voices get.”
– Victoria Jones, Executive Director of The CLTV
Looking forward into 2019, The CLTV hopes to plant a strong stake in the ground with its new permanent space and residency programming. After the grand opening, there will be about twelve large shows every year and smaller-scaled shows every 3 weeks, along with performing arts and concert series all year long. Community members, as well as those looking to become involved, can donate money or feasible and age-appropriate art supplies to The CLTV, sign up for newsletters and volunteer events, and of course, continue to bring their soul to Memphis.

]]>There are countless Memphis events and businesses worth investing your precious time off—so many, in fact, that you may feel overwhelmed by all the choices. If you’re floundering for things to do during Thanksgiving break, try one of these Memphis options.
Established in 1906, the Memphis Zoo is a long-standing Memphis attraction sure to provide an enjoyable day trip for any Memphian. It was first built to house Natch, the black bear mascot of the Memphis Turtles baseball team, but other animals were later added to the facility to create the Memphis Zoo as we know it today.
The Memphis Zoo has a host of animals from all over the world for visitors to enjoy, including elephants, pandas, tigers, polar bears, penguins, tropical birds and hippopotami. Don’t miss the three baby animals currently in the zoo’s care: a baby orangutan named Rowan, a baby sloth named Lua and a baby hippo named Winnie.
For Memphians who want a taste of art and culture over the long weekend, a visit to one of Memphis’ many art galleries is sure to sate that urge. Consider the following Memphis art museums to find one that’s right for you:
Thanksgiving is a time of year where families get together, express their thanks and participate in luxurious meals. Needless to say, the holidays can make us aware of what we have to be thankful for and how much we can give to others. For Memphians who would like to give back this holiday season, there are a number of Memphis volunteer opportunities at MIFA’s Meals on Wheels, the Memphis Crisis Center, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital and more.

Let’s start with Folk’s Folly, which was established in 1977 as Memphis’ Original Prime Steak House. Its menu boasts Memphis’ finest prime steaks and fresh seafood, and you won’t be able to resist the mouthwatering pictures of signature dishes like the A5 Japanese beef tataki and prime cut Atlantic salmon. If you weren’t hungry before, you will be now.

Next, we have Sunrise Memphis, whose menu of classic breakfast and lunch favorites doesn’t disappoint. Adult patrons can choose from a selection of cocktails, while kids of all ages will love the colorful Fruity Pebbles waffles and waffles with sprinkles. Not only do these menu options sound delicious, they look it, too! Sunrise Memphis also provides its Memphis servers and cooks with brunch on Sundays in an effort to ensure workers in the local restaurant industry get to enjoy a Sunday staple like the rest of us!

Catherine & Mary’s has a Southern take on the Sicilian and Tuscan home cooking you might find in your grandmother’s kitchen. The images of this restaurant’s fare truly pop on Instagram, from the scrumptious-looking pork belly with Carolina gold rice to the ribeye with spinach rotolo and tomato salad. If only the technology existed to order these dishes straight from your phone—oh, wait, it does.

Located in a refurbished basement on a downtown Memphis alley, Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous was the setting for the creation of Memphis-style barbecue ribs more than 70 years ago. Fast-forward to the present and you can practically smell the Instagram pictures of ribs cooking and sausages sizzling. And don’t get me started on the dishes themselves—there’s brisket and chicken and lamb, oh my!

Lastly, Rise serves up Southern biscuits, chicken and sweets that are almost as delicious onscreen as they are on your taste buds. Rise makes fresh biscuits daily—every 30 minutes, to be precise—that include but are by no means limited to the honey butter chicken biscuit slider, the spicy chickaboom biscuit and the blueberry biscuit. The cheese oozes and the freshness is obvious, but if you’re not in the mood for a biscuit, be sure to snag a fresh donut.
Each of the Memphis restaurants listed here is unique in its own way, yet they all have something in common: The food looks so amazing on Instagram that I can only imagine how good it actually tastes. I can’t wait to try them all—what about you?

]]>If you are planning a visit to Memphis anytime soon, there are certain destinations and activities you’ll want to make time for during your trip. Whether you’re traveling alone or with a group, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Memphis.
Must-see Memphis attractions
Enjoy the great outdoors at Overton Park, which includes more than 8 miles of trails, beautiful gardens and an abundance of picnic areas. Walk at a slower pace for a while as you take in everything this beautiful city has to offer.
If you have kids, you’ll want to make sure you set aside time for all the high-flying fun to be had at the Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Thanks to its comfortable, air-conditioned setting, this indoor attraction is a great place for the entire family to have some fun.
If you’re visiting with older kids and adults, your time in Memphis simply must include a visit to the Autobahn Indoor Speedway for some fast-paced racing fun and high-energy games. Race cars, test your skills and compete in the arcade with family and friends.
Nature lovers will love walking around the trails and admiring both the beautiful landscapes and natural features of the Grotto as well as the breath-taking architecture featured here as well. Many visitors enjoy photo ops and leisurely strolls along the trails and garden pathways.
No fan of Elvis “The King” Presley’s trip to Memphis would be complete without a pilgrimage to Graceland. Buy tickets early, as they tend to sell out—especially during peak travel seasons.
Celebrate history, remember our country’s past and acknowledge how far we have come with a visit to the Lorraine Motel. After Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated here, the site was turned into the National Civil Right Museum. Remember what must never be forgotten and pay tribute to a man who changed the world for good.
A quirky attraction that’s fun for all ages, the Peabody Ducks are a great way to wrap up any day spent touring the attractions and destinations of Memphis. Kids love the Peabody Ducks and even adults will find themselves smiling at their adorable antics.
If you’re looking for the feel of Fenway Park in Boston or Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles, you are in for a treat when you visit AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The ballpark, opened in April 2000, is home to the 2018 Triple-A National Champions Memphis Redbirds (a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals). Named “best minor league ballpark” in America in 2009, it hosts nightly fireworks shows during the season. The park will also be host to the Memphis 901 Football Club of Major League Soccer beginning in 2019.
There are many fun things to do in Memphis this weekend. No visit to Memphis is complete unless you spend time hearing the Reverend Al Green sing and preach in his church, the Full Gospel Tabernacle. Reverend Green’s church is on the bucket list of every baby boomer and Generation Xer who remembers this former R&B star, who recorded the number one song “Let’s Stay Together” in 1972 and is an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has been the pastor at Full Gospel since 1976.
Formerly known as the Great American Pyramid, the Memphis Pyramid was built in 1991. This former concert venue and sports arena was, for a time, home to the University of Memphis men’s basketball team and the Memphis Grizzlies NBA franchise. Although it closed for a while in 2004, hosting its last music concert in 2007, the iconic building has since reopened as Big Cypress Lodge, a Bass Pro and 100-room hotel. At a height of 321 feet or 32 stories, it is one of Memphis’s tallest buildings and by some accounts, the 10th tallest pyramid in the world.
Many have called Sun Studio in Memphis the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. Samuel Cornelius Phillips, an early pioneer in the music genre, opened it in 1950. Sun is the place that launched the career of Elvis Presley as well as Hall of Fame artists Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. The first rock ‘n’ roll song single produced in the United States came from Sun Studio, “Rocket 88,” by Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats. The group also featured a little-known drummer named Ike Turner, who would go on to fame as a member of Ike and Tina Turner. A visit to the studio will put you in the footsteps where legendary careers were launched.
Do something out of the ordinary and see these places or do these things when visiting the city. There are many fun things to do in Memphis this weekend or any weekend. If you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and do something a little different, you can become immersed in the wonderful rich history that is Memphis. ]]>Railroads played an important role in the growth of Memphis, which has served as a commercial hub for years.
The railroad transfer in Memphis was a key business transportation advantage among traders who loved the idea of using the train instead of steamboats or road-based transportation. The railroad grew popular during the era of the Civil War, and Memphis eventually became the first railroad junction to connect to Little Rock, Arkansas, which served as a crucial mode of transfer for many.
Grand Central Memphis was opened to the public in 1914. Its original name was changed to Memphis Central Station in 1944, by which point it was serving as a passenger terminal for railroad interstate transfers. Previously owned by the Illinois Central Railroad, the station is a registered passenger terminal of Amtrak and the MATA trolley system at present.
If you’re interested in checking out this historic railroad station during your Tennessean vacation, you’ll find it on Patterson Boulevard in the Downtown Memphis area. After undergoing a massive makeover in 1998, the Memphis Central Station of today is a completely renovated and restored commercial and passenger hub.
Just a few steps from the Memphis Central Station is the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum, where you can spend hours exploring a variety of exhibits and learning more about the history of the railroad in the city. While most parts of the station have been modernized, the freight tunnel nestled some 300 yards beneath the station still looks the same as when it was built in the early 1900s, and visitors can explore this tunnel and its adjacent baggage room with a museum volunteer.
Beyond history, landmarks and museums, the area is also home to Memphis’ oldest eatery, the Greek-inspired Arcade Restaurant that has been serving its patrons since 1919. You can become its latest patron when you sit down for a hearty lunch and enjoy some classic favorites from the menu. Just a few minutes away, the Memphis Farmers Market offers shopping and dining opportunities for guests of all ages.
Next time you visit Memphis, be sure to visit this historic landmark that played a significant role in Memphis’ economic growth.

Talbot Heirs Guesthouse has eight suites, or mini apartments, with all the conveniences you could ask for. An on-site convenient market and parking garage are also available.
Majestic Grille: It’s no wonder Majestic Grille is among the premier Memphis tourist attractions. This quirky restaurant will send you back in time to Old Hollywood, literally. It’s located in a refurbished silent film theater that enthralled Memphis audiences for the first 30 years of the entertainment industry. These days, Beaux Arts décor honor that sophisticated time as owner and award-winning chef Patrick Reilly prepares comfort dishes and classic cocktails in an homage to the era. If that’s not enough, you may think you’ve done a little time traveling as you enjoy the silent films and classic movies playing on the silver screen.
Majestic Grille is an unconventional dining experience that’s a fun way to look back at Memphis’ history.
The Peabody: You’ll be amazed to find lots of fun things to do at The Peabody. One of the most renowned Memphis tourist attractions, this opulent hotel has been located a half-mile from downtown since the 1940s. While the building’s architecture is simply stunning, the stars of The Peabody are the ducks. They present a daily spectacle, starting at 11 a.m., by leaving their rooftop home, sauntering down the red carpet to the soundtrack of John Phillip Sousa’s “King Cotton March,” and making their way to the Peabody Fountain to spend the day enjoying the water. The tune starts again at 5 p.m. when the ducks depart the fountain and conduct the processional in reverse. This sight is pure Instagram gold and something you won’t soon forget.
But there’s much more. You can also take a one-hour History Tour of the South’s grand hotel with the Peabody Duck Master. These daily tours give you behind-the-scenes insight of the hotel and a glimpse of just how good the Peabody Ducks have it.
We’re not done yet. You can get sustenance in style before heading out for adventure with weekend brunch. Or how about afternoon tea at Chez Phillipe, the elegant on-site restaurant? In the summer, you can also let your hair down at The Peabody Rooftop Parties.
No matter what you’re looking for, The Peabody offers ample opportunity to have an unforgettable Memphis experience.
National Civil Rights Museum: The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel offers a true, historical experience that educates visitors through multi-sensory and multi-media innovations, artifacts and structures, events, speakers and online resources. Here, guests will gain an understanding of the historical milestones of the civil rights movement and learn how to apply this knowledge to current events in the world today. This is a can’t miss stop on any visitor’s trip to Memphis and truly worth experiencing to understand the history of civil rights and how it continues to impact the culture of Memphis.

]]>Can you imagine life without rock ‘n’ roll? Elvis and Johnny Cash are just a couple of the Memphis musicians who pioneered this unique music genre—and many of them got their start at the legendary Sun Studio and Stax Records right here in Memphis.
Beyond rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis is famous for a host of other musical genres, including jazz, soul and R&B. There’s no better place to enjoy some local tunes than Beale Street, a vibrant thoroughfare lined with bars, clubs and restaurants that also plays host to a wide variety of concerts and music festivals throughout the year.
The first self-service grocery store quickly became a hit after its Memphis debut—so much so that the chain has grown in number to encompass more than 500 stores today. It may be hard to imagine now, but there was a time when consumers were supposed to hand their order lists to grocery store clerks who would select their products for them. Thank goodness Piggly Wiggly founder Clarence Saunders was around to revolutionize the shopping experience!
Nowadays, we take unisex hair salons for granted, but when Sam Ross introduced the concept, it was unthinkable to imagine men and women getting their hair cut at the same establishment. Needless to say, the idea took off.
Headquartered in Memphis, FedEx changed the delivery game by getting packages from A to B overnight. Anyone who’s ever left their belongings in another city or forgotten a loved one’s birthday is surely thankful for this particular innovation!
Before he became the founder of Holiday Inn, Kemmons Wilson had a series of disappointing lodging experiences while on a family road trip. After he recognized a market dearth of comfortable yet affordable lodging, he decided to change the game himself. Today, Holiday Inn is one of the largest hotel chains in the world.
Before two lawyers from Tennessee had the great idea to bottle Coca-Cola, people had to go to soda fountains to get their fix. The next time you’re enjoying a bottle of soda, remember you have Memphis to thank!
You can thank Clarence Saunders for the introduction of the first self-service grocery store. On Sept. 6, 1916 he opened Piggly Wiggly® in Memphis, but with a completely unheard of concept. It was the first time that shoppers could walk grocery aisles on their own and find items to purchase. This broke the traditional shopping mold in which shoppers presented their lists to clerks, who gathered the goods for customers. Saunders noticed this was time consuming and devised the solution that revolutionized shopping.
Blockbuster films like “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Bruce Almighty” and even “Lego Movie” wouldn’t be the same without the uber talented Morgan Freeman. The acting legend who continues to make his mark on Hollywood claims Memphis as his birthplace. He was born here June 1, 1937.
Speaking of uber talented, Memphis, TN is the birthplace of yet another celebrity. On Jan. 31, 1981, Justin Timberlake was born in this fair city. Since then he’s gone on to be a musical and comedic powerhouse, also delving into movies.
That’s not all, by a long shot. Celebrated actress Kathy Bates was born in Memphis on June 8, 1948. Her work on “Misery” “Titanic,” and “American Horror Story” are among the numerous roles that earned her to earn Bates critical acclaim.
Memphis is also the birthplace of the undisputed Queen of Soul. Aretha Franklin, who demands “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” was born here March 25, 1942. She went on to dominate the international music scene with her unmistakable voice.
The VeinViewer was invented in Memphis by Luminetx Technology Corp. The device uses a pulse of infrared light to provide a sort of X-ray of hemoglobin in veins. This allows healthcare workers to be more precise with drawing blood or administering medication.
Although electronic devices have taken over, some people still love the sound and feel of using a typewriter. Part of what makes it work is the typewriter ribbon, which was invented by George K. Anderson of Memphis, TN. In 1886, he patented the device.

]]>As one of the oldest areas of Memphis, South Memphis is steeped in history. So much of our city’s soul comes from South Memphis, making this neighborhood a must-visit. Stretching from Downtown Memphis to the Mississippi state line, South Memphis is home to many of the Bluff City’s most famous landmarks, including the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
You can’t visit South Memphis without a visit to the Four Way, Kimble Fish Market or any of the many barbeque joints that call South Memphis home.
Recognized as the de facto capital of South Memphis, Whitehaven was its own city until it was annexed by Memphis in 1970.
The fact that Elvis Presley Boulevard stretches through Whitehaven gives you an indication of what makes this neighborhood a must-see. That’s right, Whitehaven is home to Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion—not to mention Southland Mall, the first enclosed mall in Memphis.
Between Midtown Memphis and the Mississippi River lies a hustling and bustling section of town that is considered by many to be where Memphis truly began. In addition to being home to 100 North, otherwise known as the city’s tallest building, the downtown area is where you’ll find the Pyramid, the Peabody Hotel, AutoZone Park and the FedEx Forum.
Downtown is also home to Beale Street, one of the most famous destinations in all of Memphis, as well as the South Main Arts District, which is filled with boutiques, galleries and upscale restaurants.
East of the downtown area sits Midtown, an eclectic blend of mixed-use residential, business and commercial space. If you find yourself in Midtown’s Cooper-Young district, be sure to check out the Cooper-Young Trestle, an art installation along an old 150-foot section of railroad track that features sculptures of actual homes in the neighborhood.
Overton Park is a popular Midtown destination for locals and visitors alike, with the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis College of Art listed among its most heavily trafficked offerings.
This neighborhood’s calling card is the newly renovated former Sears distribution center that today houses mixed-use education, housing, business, and commercial property. Dubbed the Crosstown Concourse, the building was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2013.
The renovation kick-started a complete revitalization of the neighborhood as an up-and-coming arts district that is also home to the Hi-Tone, a local live music hangout that many punk bands call their second home.
Like Whitehaven, Binghampton began as an independent municipality and was annexed into Memphis in 1919. It’s a largely tight-knit community composed of millennial transplants, families, and a strong immigrant community.
Along with Crosstown, Binghampton has been going through something of a renaissance of late thanks to the revitalization of Sam Cooper Boulevard, art installations along Broad Avenue and investments in the people and businesses in the area. During the neighborhood’s biannual art walk, local artists have the chance to display their works all along the boulevard. And if you’re more into cycling than art, listen up: Broad Ave. also serves as the headquarters of the Memphis Greenline, the cycling initiative created to make the Bluff City more bike-friendly.
No matter where your travels take you through Memphis, you can find all the information you need about these neighborhoods and others at the Memphis Travel website.

]]>Italian cuisine, classic Southern fare, craft beer, high-end cocktails… culinary options abound in Memphis. If you’re planning a romantic night out on the town, these are our favorite places in the city to get dinner for two!
With an elegant yet rustic atmosphere and a unique, modern take on classic Italian cooking, Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen is a perfect spot for a dinner date. Using fresh ingredients that change with seasons, this restaurant melds traditional Italian concepts with a distinctive Southern influence, producing amazing dishes like soft-shell crab served with basil, lemon, peppers, bacon and baby red potatoes.
This quirky eatery in the Cooper-Young neighborhood of Midtown Memphis was once actually a beauty shop. In fact, it still feels like one—hooded Belvedere hair dryers and all. It also serves some really delectable food, whether you’re on a brunch day-date or looking for a fun dinner-and-cocktails spot. The Bloody Mary and eggs Sardou combo is a brunch favorite, and the cast-iron-roasted whole fish with grilled sweet corn, cotija, aioli and cayenne salt is a highlight of the dinner menu.
A strong case can be made for Alchemy Memphis being the purveyor of the best cocktails in town, and the bartenders here concoct unique, sophisticated mixed drinks in a romantic, dimly lit setting. It’s hard to take a wrong turn on the cocktail menu, but we’re especially fond of the Floating Butterfly’s charred rosemary bitters and pomegranate shaken with Wheatley vodka and fresh lime juice. Alchemy also serves shareable small plates like truffle deviled eggs with smoked salmon and crispy capers.
Located in the heart of Downtown Memphis, The Majestic Grille is a modern American steakhouse with a fun 1940s-inspired ambiance. Built in 1913, the venue served as a silent movie house for many years, and it still hosts classic movies, dance shows, art performances and music to this day. Meanwhile, the kitchen turns out outstanding New York strip steaks, filet mignon and bone-in rib eye, plus some delicious seafood options.
Here’s one for all you veggie lovers! Offering a plant-based take on American comfort food, Two Vegan Sistas is a great place for a meal with your health-conscious, planet-conscious significant other. The menu changes depending on what’s seasonally available, but mainstays like the cashew burger and veggie lasagna are always excellent. Oh, and there’s vegan ice cream. It’s amazing.

Take a guided tour of the premises to hear a brief history of the rooms and the notable items each contains, and seize this lifetime opportunity to walk on the same ground as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Even if you don’t consider yourself an Elvis fan, we bet you’ll develop a burning love for Graceland.
The National Civil Rights Museum in downtown Memphis features a renowned collection of photographs, film, and artifacts that give a comprehensive history of slavery, the civil war and the civil rights movement. Don’t miss the museum’s most iconic, somber offering: the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968.
Of course, there’s more than one history museum in Memphis. To learn more about the music legends who have lived and worked here over the years, take your pick of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. Don’t forget Sun Studio, which is home to a microphone used by Elvis Presley in addition to an array of other memorabilia.
The greenery of Shelby Farms makes this urban park the ideal place to kick back and relax, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that’s all there is to do here. The Go Ape treetop adventure course will have you swinging through trees, zip lining over Pine Lake and navigating a complex obstacle course—all under the watchful eye of your instructors, of course. What’s more, the paved Greenline connecting the park to Midtown Memphis is perfect for cycling, running and walking, and has been voted the best trail in Tennessee.
Whether you spend your days off visiting local landmarks for the first time, exploring the history that surrounds you or communing with nature, it’s easy to have an enjoyable staycation in Memphis without breaking the bank. And while the suggestions above are a good place to start, we haven’t even scratched the surface.

]]>Between its natural scenic beauty and its abundance of outdoor entertainment, Memphis is a town that’s great to get out and see—whether it’s lit by neon, moonlight or the sun.
Although many of the stops along Beale Street are indoors, you’ll likely encounter outdoor live music if you take a nighttime stroll along the famed street. Walk far enough and you’ll come upon Handy Park at Beale and 3rd, which boasts two outdoor music venues that are always free and open to the public.
Overton Park is another place that residents of Memphis love to frequent, located in the heart of Memphis and encompassing 342 acres. No matter what you love to do outdoors, Overton Park offers something for everyone, including a nine-hole golf course, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Rainbow Lake, the Memphis Zoo and a bunch of playgrounds for your little ones. Oh, and the 12-acre Old Forest State Nature Area is thrown in for good measure.
If you’re looking for great outdoor family fun that is also centrally located, Shelby Farms is one to check out. Explore more than 40 miles of paved and unpaved trails, take fun to new heights and climb through the trees on a treetop adventure course, or saddle up and hit the trails on horseback. There are many more great activities that are offered at Shelby Park Farms. Be sure to check out their website for the whole list!
A trip to Memphis simply isn’t worth it if you don’t spend some time on the banks of one of the most famous rivers in the world. Ol’ Man River serves as the perfect backdrop for an impromptu picnic, an afternoon stroll or some sightseeing—and the myriad parks along the shore give you ample opportunity to enjoy the Big Muddy.
Mud Island River Park is one of the most popular spots, boasting an exact scale replica of the Lower Mississippi River to explore. Needless to say, there’s a lot to see and do while you learn about the mighty river and what it means to Memphis.
Much of our city’s history is wrapped up in the land upon which the Memphis Botanic Gardens now sit. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to explore the entirety of Audubon Park’s 96 acres in a single visit, guests can stroll through any of the 31 gardens and have a different experience every time.
To plan your route ahead of time, learn what’s blooming in each garden by checking the Memphis Botanic Gardens website. Roses, cacti, herb gardens, conifer stands and irises are just a few of the big draws.
If you love summer and sports, this one’s for you: During baseball season, the Memphis Redbirds are frequently in action at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The family-friendly atmosphere and numerous food options make taking in a game a great way to spend the day with loved ones—and because the Redbirds are the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, you’ll catch a sneak peek of up-and-coming Major Leaguers as they hone their craft.
Since 1976, this museum has been home to a splendid Impressionist assortment including works by Pissarro, Monet and Degas. In their will, the late Hugo and Margaret Dixon gave the house and its grounds to the people of Memphis in order to set up this museum. The initial Dixon collection included works by American and French Impressionists. The museum’s traveling exhibits are usually elegant collections based on a certain time period or theme, and although it is small, it is abundant with offerings. The gallery also organizes special concerts and picnics from spring through fall, and most of these are free of charge.
Memphis is situated on the banks of the great Mississippi. Actually, Memphis is referred to as Bluff City because of the high bluffs along the river bank. With such a grand river, it is no surprise that many Memphis residents enjoy their pastimes and outdoor activities in or along the river. Enjoy a stroll along the cobblestones at the edge of the river, or take a picnic to one of the parks near the river. And if you are feeling venturesome, you can also go to the Big River Crossing, and here you can walk across the river from downtown.
This park was named after a brave resident who saved 32 people when a steamer capsized in the Mississippi in 1925. The park runs along the great river and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline and the river. The park hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Festival and the Beale Street Music Festival. When there are no major festivals, parking is available. However, the park is just a short walk from downtown attractions. Broad pathways provide ample space for walkers and joggers, while the broad stretch of green space is ideal for simply relaxing in the sun, a family game of Frisbee, or other outdoor activities.
The Memphis Zoo has often been rated as one of the best zoos in the country both for its abundance of exhibits in a simple layout and for the mere fact that you can get very close to the animals. With a Teton ecosystem with lots of wolves and grizzly bears, a Northwest Passage habitat full of river otters and polar bears, and giant pandas from China, this top-notch zoo will charm adults as well as kids. During winter, festive lights and a skating tent draw the holiday spirit to the zoo. The park is also open for select evening visits.
No matter the time of year, you can always count on great outdoor activities in Memphis.

]]>The Memphis Area Transit Authority trolley system began running in 1993. Although the trolleys enjoyed a 21-year run of shuffling locals and tourists through the heart of the city, they haven’t operated in Memphis since 2014, when service was suspended after fires broke out on two cars.
Lucky for us, after extensive repairs, renovations and refurbishment, the trolleys are back! Memphians and visitors alike can once again experience the romance of a vintage trolley car ride along Main Street.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony and inaugural ride on the new trolley system took place on April 30, 2018. Initially, three trolley cars will be in service (a green car, a gold car, and a blue-and-white two-tone car), with more to be added throughout the year. Before you know it, these colorful cars will be a common sight in Memphis, and their whistles blowing will be a familiar sound.
For now, one trolley line—the Main Street Line—is in operation, running from Butler Avenue to A.W. Willis Avenue past the Convention Center. The Riverfront Line and the Madison Avenue Line will return in the coming years.
The trolleys make 13 stops along the Main Street Line, many of them sheltered, and cars will run once every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the day of the week. A map of the route is available here along with information on the coming-soon Riverfront and Madison Ave. lines, while the MATA website offers details on trolley fares and passes. At the time of publication, a ride on the trolley costs $1 and you can get a day pass for $3.50.
Are the trolleys fast? Well, not exactly. But they are fun, reliable, stylish and will get you from A to B a heck of a lot faster than walking. To be more specific, traveling from one end of downtown to the other via trolley takes half an hour or less.
If nothing else, the experience of rolling through Memphis aboard a vintage trolley car sporting an antique-looking interior and wooden seats is an experience that every visitor to Memphis should have at least once. And if you happen to live here, the trolleys are a great option for getting around and seeing our city in a new way.

On a tour at Sun Studio, you’ll get the chance to see the equipment these legends used with your very own eyes!

]]>Although the river is a fixture of everyday life in Memphis, that does nothing to diminish its power. Why not head to Big River Crossing and experience the allure of the mighty Mississippi for yourself?
Crossing the Big River
At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi, as well as America’s longest active rail, bicycle and pedestrian crossing. The bridge connects Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee, with Main Street in West Memphis, Arkansas, tying together a 10-mile corridor of both cities’ walking and biking routes. Like the river itself, Big River Crossing is at the heart of Memphis’ great urban playground.
Big River Crossing opened in 2016, and untold thousands have enjoyed this free attraction since then. It offers sweeping views of the Mississippi River and the Memphis skyline up past South Bluffs and Beale Street Landing, with ships passing underneath throughout the day and trains regularly rolling along the adjoining railway bridge.
Memphis on the Mississippi
Step off the Tennessee side of Big River Crossing and you’re practically in the middle of downtown Memphis. The Memphis Riverfront is mere footsteps away, with urban walking trails and sweeping bluff-top views from Martyrs Park. What’s more, bike lanes on Front Street make it easy for cyclists to get just about anywhere in the downtown area, including countless local shops and eateries.
Grab a snack and a hot cup of joe at Bluff City Coffee & Bakery, try a local craft beer or two at Ghost River Brewery, browse the Memphis Farmers Market or head to Central BBQ to find out for yourself why Memphis is so famous for its ribs. These establishments and many more are within about a mile of Big River Crossing, and you don’t have to go much farther to hit the Beale Street Historic District—home of the blues and endless possibilities.
As for the other side of the river, there’s some cool stuff in West Memphis, too. Be sure to make time for Big River Trail, which connects to Big River Crossing and offers a chance to explore the beautiful riverside landscape. The trail follows the levee alongside the Mississippi River, and its construction is an ongoing project. Once completed, it will stretch along more than 1,600 river miles.
Big River Crossing is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is available to cyclists and pedestrians free of charge. Check out the bridge around sunrise, sunset, holidays and other special events to see it sparkle with more than 100,000 Philips LED lights, creating a truly brilliant display.
