]]>This destination is located right alongside University of Memphis, so you’ll be battling college kids for seating. However, you’ll feel a retro vibe going on here as some of the best pizza in the state is served. It’s also a great destination if you love ’80s music.
When it comes to Memphis, you knew I had to include several BBQ joints. This includes Cozy Corner BBQ. Near downtown, this joint offers a delicious selection of BBQ pork butts, Cornish hen, chicken wings, beef summer sausage and ribs.
Arcade bills itself as the oldest restaurant in Memphis. When you’re the oldest of anything anywhere it means you’re doing something right. Especially in a cutthroat food city like Memphis where only the best survive. Upon walking in, it’s obvious the restaurant has received a facelift, but the food remains as incredible as ever. From the classic Elvis (peanut butter and banana sandwich), sweet potato pancakes, milkshakes, deep-fried French toast and other favorites, this is a delicious spot I highly recommend.
This is one of the top BBQ spots in the city. Ask anyone around, and most will tell you this is in their favorite category. With a top-tier dry rub to amazing sides (which any great BBQ spot needs), you need to try out this BBQ destination.
This donut hot spot has been slinging freshly fried dough since 1968. Even though the restaurant is open 24 hours a day, it somehow always has a line. It’s a small joint, so you may not be able to eat inside, but these donuts will pick up your taste buds wherever you go.
This restaurant has a long and interesting history. It’s also gone by several names, but the food has almost always remained the same. Whatever its name is, it has some of the best fried chicken in the city.
In the mood for a burger? Dyer’s has been serving greasy deliciousness since 1912. In its time, it has become a food institution within the city. If you think you’ve had every kind of cheeseburger, think again. The unique but amazing taste of this burger is out of this world.
These are just some of the amazing destinations for food you simply must put on your Memphis food bucket list. Of course, there’s no shortage of food options out there. There will always be new tastes and fusion options to explore. Whatever your taste buds though, make sure to get on out and enjoy the amazing food scene that is Memphis.

]]>Would you ever guess a high-end hotel would actually let ducks march in through the lobby? Well, at the Peabody Hotel, which is one of the most historic hotels in the state, that’s exactly what happens. Every day a team of ducks march through the lobby at 11 a.m. and eventually into the fountain. The hotel even rolls out a literal red carpet for the ducks.
This is one of those activities you may only need to see once, but it is a grand time, especially if you have kids. There’s just something whimsical about ducks walking through the hotel lobby that makes it worth seeing.
If you’re going to have ducks walking the red carpet, why not have beer-drinking goats? If this sounds like your cup of tea (or pint of beer), visit Silky O’Sullivan’s, located on Beal Street. This is an Irish joint (while there, order the “Diver” mystery cocktail), and it is home to a number of goats. So if you ever grow tired of the piano music from inside the bar, you can come out and spend your time with the goats on the outside.
Here’s an odd one for you: The Pink Palace was originally built by the founder of the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain. There’s a large museum inside, with all kinds of odd items. This includes a shrunken head, which was given to the owner after he visited with tribes in South America. Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s not. But it’s strange and unusual, that’s for sure.
The Malco Summer Drive-In theater is a great chance to travel back in time. Sure, the drive-in movie isn’t the same draw as it once was, but there’s just something exciting and oddly romantic that makes taking in this attraction such a fun experience. Plus, most of the movies put on display are classics from a time period gone by.
These are just a handful of cool, hidden and unusual things to do in Memphis. In fact, some of them are downright strange. However, it gives you a sampling of what you really have in store for you in the city if you’re interested. Whatever you decide to do, just know there’s always a new adventure for you in Memphis, often right around the corner.

]]>When you come out to Civil Axe Throwing, you’ll find a number of axe-throwing options available.
First, there is the one-hour axe-throwing session. You can either throw with someone else, on your own, or throw with other individuals who want to take part in the activity (it’s a great way to make new friends).
There are axe-throwing leagues for when you are feeling a bit more competitive. The eight-week league allows you to form up with a team and compete against other teams. So whether you are going in blind and want to have some kind of competitive element added to your axe throwing or you have been practicing and feel good about your skill, the eight-week league is the perfect option for you.
If you’re looking for a way to entertain a large group of people, why not consider coming out to take up axe throwing in Memphis? Civil Axe Throwing offers group events; you can book portions of the facility for eight to 50 people. Just contact Civil Axe Throwing ahead of time to book your slot.
If you’ve been looking for fun things to do in Memphis and want to give throwing axes a try, here are a few things you need to know ahead of time.
First, it costs $20 an hour for a ticket. Each “booth” is made up of eight tickets per hour. This means you can fit up to eight people per booth. If you want to make sure the booth is all yours, you will need to purchase all eight tickets. If not, you may be partnered with other people (although typically only during busy hours).
There is no requirement for shoes. However, it is a good idea to wear closed-toed shoes (open-toed shoes and heavy-bladed objects usually do not go well together). Outside of this, you can wear whatever shoes you might like.
There is an age limit for throwing axes; you need to be at least 14 years of age to take part. As long as you meet this requirement, you will be fine to take part in the activity. For any other questions, feel free to contact Civil Axe Throwing.

]]>The post Activities to Do in Memphis in June 2019 appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Here are some of the events and fun things to do in Memphis in 2019 this June.
Chubby Checker at Graceland
Going to Graceland mansion, the historic home of Elvis Aaron Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, is typically the highlight of every visit to Memphis. If you want to see a rock and roll legend perform at the home of a legend, plan to get tickets for Saturday, June 22, to see the one and only Chubby Checker. Plan on twisting the night away at the Graceland Soundstage, located on the grounds of the historic home.
Memphis Italian Festival
Memphis is home to many distinct and diverse cultures. June 1 is a chance to kick off the month and celebrate one of those cultures, Italy. The Memphis Italian Festival is a chance for you to join the family, experience food and music, and feel the abbondanza (Italian for abundance) of Italian culture. The festival will be held in Marquette Park (4946 Alrose Avenue) and goes from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. The cost each day of the three-day event, which begins on Thursday, May 30, and ends on June 1, is $10.
Memphis Redbirds Baseball
The Memphis Redbirds are a minor league baseball team that plays in the Pacific Coast League. The Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals is the defending PCL champion and plays home games at AutoZone Park, located in downtown Memphis (200 Union Avenue). The team has 15 home dates in June, which gives you plenty of opportunity to come out to the ballpark and watch championship-level baseball. The Redbirds face these opponents in June:
Mid-South International Festival
The Mid-South International Festival is on June 29-30, 2019, at the Railgarten event venue (2166 Central Ave.). The event features international music, foods and dance and is an opportunity to experience many different cultures without a passport. The event is free to the public; the cover cost for large bands is $2. There is a shop for international arts and crafts, and you can experience an international wrestling event and sand soccer!
2019 Craft Food and Wine Festival
The Columns (1 South Main St.) is the home to the 2019 Craft Food and Wine Festival. Scheduled to be held Sunday, June 23, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., the tickets go for $55 to $115 per person. The proceeds from the event go to an excellent cause — to benefit Memphis’s Church Health Center, a local medical service that provides for residents who are uninsured or underinsured. The event is a chance to experience the culinary delights of Memphis, which is more than just barbecue.
This is just a small list of the fun things to do in Memphis in 2019. There are plenty of other fun things to see or do when planning to spend time in Bluff City. The best way to see all that the city has to offer in the summer is to simply plan your visit!

]]>The post A List of Memphis Museums appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>These museum and historical landmarks are easy for residents and visitors to identify with and top on the list of things to do in Memphis. But the Lorraine and Graceland are not the only museums that hold historic significance for not only the city, but the world. There are plenty of museums and cultural spaces in the area that everyone should plan to see. Here is a short list of five such must-visit places when in town.
1. Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium (3050 Central Avenue)
The Pink Palace Museum is the largest science and technology museum of its type in the mid-South. Nearly a quarter of a million visitors each year come to see and put their hands on exhibits ranging from archaeology to zoology and everything in-between. The museum is free to members and costs range from $10 for children up to $30 for adults, depending on the types of exhibits you want to see. All can enjoy free admission on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. until museum doors close at 5 p.m.
2. Brooks Museum (1934 Poplar Avenue)
Founded in 1916, the Brooks Museum is both the largest and oldest art museum in the State of Tennessee. It features a large collection of unique and diverse art which plays to the diversity of the Memphis community. The collection, which is ever expanding, features the works of artists who are local, national, and international. The museum also schedules various programs that discuss these and other works in its collection and the artist who created them.
3. Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum (191 Beale Street)
Memphis is the home to music. Its musical heritage dates back to the days in the early part of the last century on Beale Street, where free persons brought the music of their heritage to the city and created the forms we know as soul, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. These are all uniquely Memphis, and its contribution to the world of music is on display at the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul. Appropriately located on historic Beale Street, it is definitely one of the things to do in Memphis. It is one of the first museums born of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History that is outside of Washington, D.C.
4. Stax Museum of American Soul Music (926 E McLemore Avenue)
When the historic Stax Records went bankrupt in 1976, many feared for the fate of the old building on McLemore Avenue. Much like Berry Gordy’s home in Detroit, MI, which was home to Motown Records and the famed “Hitsville, U.S.A.” sound, what was to become to the place that was the birthplace to “Soulsville, U.S.A.”? The answer: A museum was created in 2003 to pay homage to the great acts that came out of Memphis, including Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, Booker T. and the MGs, and Carla Thomas, just to name a few.
5. The Cotton Museum (65 Union Street)
Memphis was the center of cotton trade during the period of time before the Civil War known as the antebellum South. It was such an important part of the local economy that an exchange building was built downtown at 65 Union Street to facilitate the trading of this important commodity. The old trading floor is now the site for the Cotton Museum. It was opened in 2006 and its designed purpose is to preserve the cultural history of cotton to Memphis. It boasts 100,000 visitors a year through its doors.
This is an incredibly short list of places that you should plan on seeing when you are in Memphis. Do some research and look up the additional places that provide you with a glimpse of the city’s rich history, culture, contribution to the world of music, and celebration of diversity and life.

]]>There’s nothing better than an incredible view and an amazing party. That is exactly what guests receive when they step foot onto the rooftop of The Peabody during the summer. From April through August, The Peabody is home to some of the best nightlife in the entire city. So whether guests want to come out for a drink and take in the sunset or they want to dance the night away, something is always happening at The Peabody.
If there’s one thing both locals and visitors alike need to experience, it’s an evening on the rooftop at The Peabody. It has been repeatedly voted not only a “Top 10 Rooftop Bar,” but one of the “Best Pick-Up Joints” by the Memphis Flyer.
Nugget from Q107.5 FM and DJ Epic host Thursday night parties to help get the weekend started off right. Throughout the summer, new drinks are on offering as well as an assortment of bands and musical acts. Plus, the sunset and view of both the Mississippi River and the city can’t be beat.
For anyone looking to come out to The Peabody for the Thursday night party, both street parking and lot parking are available. Valet parking is also available at the hotel as well. Public transportation also stops at The Peabody.
There is always something to check out when you’re at The Peabody. While every Thursday is taken over by DJ Epic, there are other musical acts and events going on throughout the summer. One of the biggest nights of the year is on the 4th of July. This is the busiest party of the summer, so those who are looking to take in the night’s firework show with the best view in town should arrive early.
Other acts that will be stopping by The Peabody include the Bluff City Bandits, G3, Hillbilly Casino, the M-80s, Walrus and Ghost Town Blues Band.
