]]>Your LinkedIn photo needs to be different from what you might use on Facebook or Instagram. It needs to be professional. Avoid the blurry images you have of yourself, or anything that has you out with friends. It needs to be of just you, wearing a professional outfit. Even if you need someone to help you take a professional headshot, do so. The only time you should even consider moving away from this is if you work in a specialty career path. For example, if you’re a chef, have a picture of you in the kitchen (but always make sure it’s still a profile picture of your face). Or, if you’re a videographer, you can be holding a camera. If it’s brand- and career-related, it’s OK to have it included. But other than this, always go professional.
Your resume will include all the bullet points of your working history. The headline is what helps turn heads, so get creative with this. When looking for Memphis jobs, you want someone to see a bit of your personality. You’re not just a mindless drone floating around. So, showcase yourself and your personality in the headline. Here are some creative examples if you need inspiration.
LinkedIn is not the place to upload spammy content to try to sell something. It’s not a place to post YouTube videos of your vacation to the Bahamas. However, it is the perfect spot for you to craft a blog geared toward your profession. If you’re a marketer, keep a blog about marketing, using social media to expand a brand, SEO, mobile marketing and so on. You can also upload from your blog if it’s located on another website. This keeps your profile fresh, relevant and in front of employers.
LinkedIn might be for professionals, but it is still a social media platform. When looking at getting a job in Memphis, join a related group that connects you to other Memphis professionals. Maybe you connect with other kitchen operators or hotel managers. Whatever group you join, make sure to post, stay active and participate. There’s no point in joining a group if others don’t know you exist.
These are just a few ways to set yourself apart from other job seekers in the greater Memphis area. Just remember, as is the case with your paper resume, keep it up to date and comb through it for any errors. A clean, easy-to-read and concise resume will let potential employers know everything they need to know about you, which helps boost your chance at landing that all-important interview.

]]>First of all, what do you like to do? What interests you? Maybe you love to bake pastries, or perhaps you’ve always been a fan of classic books. Because, let’s face it; do you really want to open a business you have zero passion for? Sure, a vegan pizza joint might do well, but if you’re not vegan and you hate pizza, will you really be happy? Yes, the purpose of running a business is to make money, but ultimately, you want to be happy, so consider what you enjoy doing. That might be the best way to identify what business will work for you.
Even if you haven’t run your own business before, you already know the importance of “location, location, location.” You need to know the location. If you want to open a hair salon, is there a need for it in a specific area? And what client base lives in the area? There’s probably a need for what you like to do, but you need to know where it will work within the city.
What kinds of skills do you have? Area you a “people person”? Perhaps you should work in retail. Would you rather avoid interacting directly with people? Perhaps an e-commerce business will work better for you. Know your strengths, and, just as importantly, know your weaknesses.
The hardest part of any business is starting it up. The vast majority of business ideas will remain just that: ideas. There are a million reasons that can prevent someone from opening up a new enterprise. There’s the fear of the unknown, the potential for failure, not having business management experience and so on. To truly succeed, though, you need to just start. Lay the foundation for your company. The first step is the most difficult. Thankfully, when starting a business in Memphis, assistance is all around. From the Greater Memphis Chamber to non-profit organizations looking to offer advice and knowledge, you’re in the right place to start your own company. It’s up to you to get the ball rolling.

]]>By the time you’ve hit your 30s, you’ve been working for some time. In fact, you’ve probably been in your current career path for at least a decade, if not longer. The skills you’ve developed over this time will help you when opening a new business.
But what happens if your future business has nothing to do with what you’re doing right now? There’s nothing wrong with that at all. You might work in accounting now but want to move to running a restaurant. The accounting knowledge you have will help. You’ve also learned how to follow a set schedule and communicate professionally with others. All of this is will help you with your new business.
You’ve been in your line of work for several years now. And, chances are, you’ve seen the future. You can see what your life will be like five or ten years down the road. Does it really look like something you want to do? If you stay with the job, you might find it difficult, if not impossible, to walk away. In a way, you’ll become stuck. In your 30s, you’re anything but stuck. So take advantage of it.
Networking is important for any business. You’ve had to hustle and create everything yourself up to this point. From finding work to talking with other employees who also started at the ground up. You’ve developed a strong network. You can use this networking to build your new business. You can also pull from this skill as you grow your idea for the new company.
It’s important to be completely honest with yourself. There’s always a chance a business will fail. There’s no shortage of reasons: It wasn’t prepared properly, it didn’t have a good location, marketing was bad, or it was ahead of its time. If you wait to start a business, you might have one shot at your business. But in your 30s, you can fail, learn from it, and come back better than ever.

Are you looking for a piece of wall art that looks great and still brings a bit of industrialization into your home? If so, map wall art is a great option for you. There are grid maps that will show off the city street-map grid. It’s often strangely beautiful how this grid unfolds. There are also several fantastic presentations for this. While you can find a number of these, the MEMPHIS Tennessee map art deco canvas print by Map Horizontal Wall is fantastic. Just the slight additional art deco border is enough to make it really pop (for all artists’ links, check out the “Additional Reading” section below).

Memphis has a beautiful skyline. A number of artists online sell representational prints for the skyline, but one of our favorites is the Memphis Skyline Art Print by WindbyArtshop. It has a whimsical look to it, as if you found it in a children’s book somewhere. And if you have a high-quality printer on hand, you can download it directly from the website and print it without ever paying for shipping.

With plenty of color options and print styles, there’s something here for you.
You don’t need to physically be in Memphis to purchase great items made by local artists. And many of the best Memphis items are not sold at large stores. Instead, these are made by lovers of Memphis who want to show off their pride in the city and share it with you. These listed items are a handful of the cool Memphis objects you can purchase through Etsy, but make sure to sift through the items. You never know what great independent designer materials you’ll find on the website.

]]>Music is as ingrained in Memphis culture as just about anything else. Blues is part of the fiber of Memphis, and yet rock ’n’ roll, country, jazz and just about every other form of music also beats through the city’s lifeblood. Whether you’re a fan of Elvis, B.B. King or even Justin Timberlake, you’ll be interested to know that some of the biggest names in music history spent time in Memphis, were born in Memphis or recorded influential albums in Memphis.
Walking down the street, you’ll always feel the music. Just about every bar, club, restaurant and other nighttime destinations have some kind of live music going on. From local musicians to traveling acts, there’s no shortage of musical activities to take in.
Memphis is one of the great food scenes in the country. Yes, it is best known for its Memphis-style barbecue, but there’s so much more to discover. As the melting point of the North and the South, you’ll find everything from fried chicken and waffles to Chicago-style pizza. Each restaurant has its own unique take on varying styles, and while the city might not be as big as Los Angeles or New York, you’ll find nearly just as many food opportunities. Many of these food destinations came from people’s love of working with food and their own personal background. It is this personal background and connection with food that makes Memphis what it is.
Memphis is all about getting people outside to enjoy life. From the Delta Fair to music festivals, there is something going on outside just about every single weekend of the year.
The beauty of Memphis culture is that it’s always changing. The makeup of the city now will be different 10 years down the road. While Memphis will always pull from its music, food and civil rights heritage, there are new faces, new ways of life and new ideas constantly flooding in. So if you’re looking for a destination to call home that will both surprise you and keep you on your toes, there really is no other place in the country like Memphis.

]]>Now is the perfect time to update and touch up your resume. However, don’t have just one. There will be different positions for which you’ll want to highlight different skills. If you’re hitting the streets to hand out resumes at restaurants or clothing stores, have resumes on hand that are tailored to those jobs and highlight the skills and previous work experience you have in the specific industry.
If possible, have someone else read through your resume. They can point out mistakes and help you polish it.
If you have a specific company you want to work for, head over to the company website and look for the Careers page, then check to see if there is an available opening. If you don’t find this information on the site, email the company directly to ask.
Next, you’ll want to check websites like LinkedIn and Monster, two of the largest job posting websites anywhere. You may also want to check The Commercial Appeal newspaper website to see what kinds of jobs are listed there as well.
Most jobs require submitting an application and resume online. However, after submitting, don’t just sit and wait. Continue looking. It may take some companies weeks, if not months, before they get around to filling a particular position. You probably don’t have that kind of time, so keep looking and applying.
When a Memphis business calls and wants to bring you in for an interview, make sure to research the business. You need a strong understanding of what the business does, its history and what kind of products or services it offers. This way, during the interview process, you can ask questions. There will be a time during the interview when the human resources representative will ask if you have any questions. By asking well-thought-out questions regarding the company, you will demonstrate your knowledge and willingness to go the extra mile.
These are just a handful of the ways you can go about looking for work in Memphis. Oftentimes, looking for work feels like a full-time job. So don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a quick response after submitting one application. Stick with it and keep looking. With a growing population and businesses coming in every week, you’ll find a job that fits your skill set perfectly.

]]>So you have an idea. Great. Now you just need to decide who will buy your product or service. If you’re setting up shop in Memphis, you’ll want to know the demographics you want to target and where these people are living in the city. This will help with your advertising. It will also help you determine who may or may not be interested in buying your product or visiting your restaurant.
Remember, the more research you perform early on, the easier it will be to market and reach an audience. There’s no such thing as too much data here. So really dig deep into demographics, competition and locating potential customers.
What is the goal of your business plan? What do you want to accomplish? You need to decide this, and then put it in writing. That way, everyone in the company knows what the business plan is.
This doesn’t need to be the third step in your business plan. In fact, you should start saving money as soon as you have the idea. Then, when it looks like you’re going to follow through with creating a business, look for ways to raise money. You can use Kickstarter and online money-raising methods, or you can borrow money from a bank. Ideally, avoid asking friends and family for money if you can because money between friends can ultimately cause friendships to collapse if things go south.
Yes, one particular location may be more expensive than others. However, you need to be where your customers are. A favorable location may cost more, but it could mean that your business will grow faster.
Register your business with the city, the state and the federal government. Trademark your name if you have to, and begin creating social media profiles before others can take the name from you.
These are a few of the important steps you need to follow when starting a business in Memphis. It is hard work to run your own company, and it will take long hours and plenty of determination. However, you can do it. You have the willpower and the great idea. Plus, with a city like Memphis as your backdrop, you have access to a top-tier talent pool. By following these steps for starting a business in Memphis, you’ll be on the right track to achieving your dreams.

]]>While February is African American heritage month around the country, Africa in April is unique to Memphis as the city looks to shine a light on the important influence African Americans have played in the overall cultural history of Memphis. You will find celebrations of African history, art and culture taking place throughout the city, with many vendors offering special products. There is also a Blues music showcase during the month.
Throughout the entire month of May, there is an entire series dedicated to showing off the incredible heritage of the city. During the month, some of the most important cultural events take place including the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, Great American River Run, International Week and, of course, the Beale Street Music Festival.
Whether you’re Italian or simply craving Italian food, the Memphis Italian Festival takes place every year sometime during late May or early June (this also depends on the Memphis in May celebration, as the Memphis Italian Festival will adjust accordingly, typically taking place the weekend after the Memphis in May celebration has finished). The Memphis Italian Festival occurs at Marquette Park and brings in Italian cooking competitions, musical activities, and local artists. There is also a 5K run, pizza tossing demonstrations, Galtelli Cup Recreational Bocce Tournament, and so much more going on with this festival.
Outside of major festivals and events, music is as much a part of the city as anything else. Some of the biggest names in gospel, blues, rock and roll, country and others stem from Memphis. While you may already know Elvis and B.B. King are important musicians from Memphis, performers such as Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, Isaac Hayes, and others all either were born in Memphis or spent a part of their career in the city. Beale Street and Stax Records are two important destinations for anyone looking to discover Memphis music.
These are just a few examples of Memphis culture. From art around the city to culturally significant events, it doesn’t matter if you’ve called Memphis home your entire life or if you are a recent transplant, now is the perfect time to get out and take in the incredible Memphis culture available to you.

FedEx is the largest private employer in Memphis, as well as the largest tenant of the Memphis International Airport. Its current Super Hub is undergoing modernization and expansion, with the goal of increasing capacity and preparing for upcoming growth.
Memphis International Airport is already home to the second-largest air cargo facility in the world—and this will further secure its positioning as a major hub. To keep up with demands across the globe, FedEx will be investing in new technology, which it can leverage to reduce the costs of its operations.
FedEx’s Super Hub development broke ground in March 2019 and is expected to continue through 2025. This is despite the fact that FedEx has been cutting its costs in other areas of the globe. The Super Hub will be a technologically advanced facility, providing upgrades and expansion that will be necessary for the business to continue to expand. While it’s a gamble, FedEx is confident in its transportation capabilities in the area.
While this project is large, it only represents a very small amount of the upcoming growth in Memphis. There are dozens of new projects slated for development in Memphis, a city that is growing dramatically within the next few years.
Memphis is currently seen as an area that is packed with potential. One of the top cities for millennials, yet an area that has not experienced significant growth in the past, the city is poised for rapid expansion.

]]>Is there really anything else you need to know about this? It takes place at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on August 3 (which is a Saturday) from 6 to 10 p.m. Basically, if you’re hungry, looking for some quality Memphis chicken and want to water it down with a locally crafted beer, this is the perfect event for you.
The week-long celebration of Elvis starts on August 9 and lasts all the way until August 17. It’s a great time to visit Graceland, or you can stop by one of the numerous other locations around Memphis that are putting on a special activity for Elvis fans. Make sure to check out the website Elvis.com for additional information.
During the festival, you can create your own water lantern and bring it to the waterfront at W. Mallory Avenue. There is something magical about this event as you watch the water lanterns sway and bob on the water. If you haven’t yet taken in this particular event, it’s a great opportunity to get out with the kids.
This is one of the biggest festivals in all of Tennessee. It begins on August 30 and lasts until September 8. There are different events, activities and live music events going on during the fair and festival. You do need to purchase tickets for each individual day, but you can buy tickets at the door or at your local Kroger store.
These are just a handful of the events and activities going on in Memphis this August. More events are to come and will be announced as the weeks approach, so make sure to keep it here for the latest updates on events, shows, concerts and activities going on.

When it comes to Memphis, you knew I had to include several BBQ joints. This includes Cozy Corner BBQ. Near downtown, this joint offers a delicious selection of BBQ pork butts, Cornish hen, chicken wings, beef summer sausage and ribs.
Arcade bills itself as the oldest restaurant in Memphis. When you’re the oldest of anything anywhere it means you’re doing something right. Especially in a cutthroat food city like Memphis where only the best survive. Upon walking in, it’s obvious the restaurant has received a facelift, but the food remains as incredible as ever. From the classic Elvis (peanut butter and banana sandwich), sweet potato pancakes, milkshakes, deep-fried French toast and other favorites, this is a delicious spot I highly recommend.
This is one of the top BBQ spots in the city. Ask anyone around, and most will tell you this is in their favorite category. With a top-tier dry rub to amazing sides (which any great BBQ spot needs), you need to try out this BBQ destination.
This donut hot spot has been slinging freshly fried dough since 1968. Even though the restaurant is open 24 hours a day, it somehow always has a line. It’s a small joint, so you may not be able to eat inside, but these donuts will pick up your taste buds wherever you go.
This restaurant has a long and interesting history. It’s also gone by several names, but the food has almost always remained the same. Whatever its name is, it has some of the best fried chicken in the city.
In the mood for a burger? Dyer’s has been serving greasy deliciousness since 1912. In its time, it has become a food institution within the city. If you think you’ve had every kind of cheeseburger, think again. The unique but amazing taste of this burger is out of this world.
These are just some of the amazing destinations for food you simply must put on your Memphis food bucket list. Of course, there’s no shortage of food options out there. There will always be new tastes and fusion options to explore. Whatever your taste buds though, make sure to get on out and enjoy the amazing food scene that is Memphis.

The band is made up of seven talented musicians. This includes Randy Ballard on the trumpet as well as Jawaun Crawford on the trumpet. Both Nathan Duvall and Victor Sawyer play the trombone, and Jim Spake plays the alto sax. Neal Bowen brings the beat as he plays the bass, and Ryan Peel brings it all together on drums.
When heading out to the Lucky 7 Brass Band show, gates will open at 6 p.m. It’s best to show up early in order to get the best seat. It is a family-friendly event, and you can bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs, blankets and coolers. The show does begin at 7 p.m., so the earlier you arrive, the more time you’ll have to set up.
You can park downtown and then ride a bicycle down to the river. You can also rent a bike or scooter if you’d like. If you have gear, you can also walk down without a problem. Plus, there is Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible parking available right on Mud Island.
There is a performance every Friday night beginning on June 21 and ending with the Lucky 7 Brass Band on August 9. While you owe it to yourself to take in the final act of the summer, there are plenty of other acts to enjoy.
On June 21, Nick Black takes center stage for “Soulin’ on the River.” Then, on July 12 (there is a weekend off to celebrate the Fourth of July) Black Cream will perform. There is another weekend off before Katrina Anderson plays on July 26, and then the Lucky 7 Brass Band will perform on August 9 to close out the event.
“Soulin’ on the River” is an extended concert series taking place at The Grove on Mud Island River Park. Kicking off on June 21 and ending on August 9, it is a great opportunity to get out of the house and take in some of the best Memphis sounds. So whether you check out Tonya Dyson or the Lucky 7 Brass Band, make sure to schedule plans to head out to the park by 6 p.m. That way, you will have the best seats for some world-class performances.

]]>The post Dive Into the History of Memphis Before You Visit appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Whenever you visit this area of the country, it is always a good idea to have some understanding of the Civil War. Tennessee did secede from the United States in June 1861. At that time, the city of Memphis became a major defensive position for the Confederate States Army. However, within a year the Union Army took control of the city and held it for the remainder of the war.
Throughout the 1960s, Memphis became the center of the civil rights movement. Because of a number of segregation practices, the city swelled with a large population of African Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. spent much of his time here and was later assassinated at his hotel in April 1968.
Some of the most renown musicians in American history either grew up and moved out of Memphis or remained and helped to grow the music culture. Some musicians did end up moving north, partly because of the segregation taking place in the city, and they ended up planting roots in other locations such as Chicago, Detroit and New York City. However, Memphis played a strong role in the development of these musicians. Some of the top musicians to come out of the city includes Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones, Muddy Waters, Justin Timberlake, and Three 6 Mafia.
These are just a few of the important dates and events in the history of Memphis you should learn about prior to visiting the city. Now, there’s nothing wrong with reading further and diving into other bits of Memphis history. If there are aspects of history you find more interesting, by all means, read up on them prior to your visit. It will make the time you spend in the city that much more enjoyable. By educating yourself beforehand, you’ll be able to live through many of these important historical events when you arrive.

]]>Would you ever guess a high-end hotel would actually let ducks march in through the lobby? Well, at the Peabody Hotel, which is one of the most historic hotels in the state, that’s exactly what happens. Every day a team of ducks march through the lobby at 11 a.m. and eventually into the fountain. The hotel even rolls out a literal red carpet for the ducks.
This is one of those activities you may only need to see once, but it is a grand time, especially if you have kids. There’s just something whimsical about ducks walking through the hotel lobby that makes it worth seeing.
If you’re going to have ducks walking the red carpet, why not have beer-drinking goats? If this sounds like your cup of tea (or pint of beer), visit Silky O’Sullivan’s, located on Beal Street. This is an Irish joint (while there, order the “Diver” mystery cocktail), and it is home to a number of goats. So if you ever grow tired of the piano music from inside the bar, you can come out and spend your time with the goats on the outside.
Here’s an odd one for you: The Pink Palace was originally built by the founder of the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain. There’s a large museum inside, with all kinds of odd items. This includes a shrunken head, which was given to the owner after he visited with tribes in South America. Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s not. But it’s strange and unusual, that’s for sure.
The Malco Summer Drive-In theater is a great chance to travel back in time. Sure, the drive-in movie isn’t the same draw as it once was, but there’s just something exciting and oddly romantic that makes taking in this attraction such a fun experience. Plus, most of the movies put on display are classics from a time period gone by.
These are just a handful of cool, hidden and unusual things to do in Memphis. In fact, some of them are downright strange. However, it gives you a sampling of what you really have in store for you in the city if you’re interested. Whatever you decide to do, just know there’s always a new adventure for you in Memphis, often right around the corner.

]]>Improvements to the airport include: moving walkways, wider corridors, larger boarding areas, higher ceilings and natural lighting. All of these new improvements should make the Memphis International Airport feel bright, open and spacious, while also increasing its overall capacity.
In addition to this, the airport will be adding 25 destinations served by direct flights—becoming both busier and larger.
A combination of bonds, federal grants, and self-funding are going to be used for the new developments at Memphis International Airport, with no money coming from the city itself. With the airport being the first impression millions of visitors experience for the city, new developments in the airport’s technology will be good for residents and good for commerce.
Modernization isn’t the only thing that’s going on at Memphis International Airport. The FedEx Super Hub located at the Memphis International Airport is also due for some significant expansion and modifications—and it’s already the second largest hub in the world. ]]>The AMUM has a number of permanent collections. These are works of art that are always on display, allowing you to come in and see these collections whenever you might want. Some of the permanent collections include the Ancient Egyptian Collection (which shows off antiquities dating back to 3800 BCE). There is also the African Collection, featuring over 180 different pieces of Sub-Saharan African Art, plus 1,000 works on paper.
There are rotating exhibitions that come and go from the AMUM. To discover the latest exhibits coming to the museum, be sure to visit the AMUM website and select “Upcoming at AMUM” under the “Exhibitions” tab.
Currently, Art Shay is scheduled to begin on June 23 and last until October 5, 2019. Art Shaw was an American photographer who took pictures of a number of important American historical events, including the Great Chicago Fire of 1968. (Art Shay died in 2018.)
The AMUM first opened back in 1981. At the time, it opened with the original name of “University Gallery.” Over the years, it has brought in a number of new exhibits and pieces of work, as it constantly looks to add new pieces to its collection. Much of its current collection has been donated over the years.
Eventually, in 1994, Memphis State University became known as the University of Memphis. When this took place, the University Gallery took on the new name of the Art Museum of the University of Memphis.
The current collection is mostly devoted to Egyptian and African art, although there are a number of additional pieces, including Épinal prints of Napoleon Bonaparte and works from local Memphis artists, not to mention several polaroids, prints, and silk screens by Andy Warhol.
The AMUM is open Mondays through Saturdays with operational hours from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (except on holidays). It is located at the 142 CFA Building.
You can contact the museum at (901) 768-2224. If you have questions you wish to discuss over email, you can email the art gallery at artmuseum@memphis.edu. If you want to stay up to date on the latest events taking place at the art museum, you can visit the website and sign up to join the mailing list.

]]>State parks are probably among humanity’s greatest cultural developments, and what better way to enjoy something than to ensure that it’s preserved for future generations that might want to relive the experience? T.O. Fuller, however, also adds to the novelty by giving visitors a chance to walk in the footsteps of history.
T.O. Fuller State Park was only the second U.S. state park that admitted African Americans, and its facilities were actually built to cater to African Americans. While building the park, workers discovered the Chucalissa site — a complex of mounds, villages and plazas that were home to Mississippian native peoples thousands of years ago.
The modern park took its name from Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, a pioneering leader who spent decades fighting for equality and representation at a time when disparity was the rule of law. Today, anyone can enjoy hiking, camping, sports or educational activities on the grounds, and since it’s the only state park within Memphis city limits, it’s one of the best local opportunities to get outdoors.
How do Memphian nature lovers take advantage of this amazing park? With more than 1,100 acres to explore, there’s no shortage of adventures to tackle:
Get acquainted with the lifestyle of those who came to Memphis long before you. This is a great starting point to explore T.O. Fuller — you can explore hands-on archeology with your kids, learn more about the native plant and animal species that call the park home, or see one of the East Coast’s best-preserved prehistoric settlements.
A network of well-maintained trails weaves through T.O. Fuller, so it’s the ideal place for a casual walk or intense run. Thanks to the heavily forested surroundings, it’s easy to put the urban hustle on pause for a moment as you reconnect with yourself, nature or your dog. Most of the trails here are easy to moderate, so take your time and enjoy the shade.
Whether you prefer roughing it or relaxing in a recreational vehicle, T.O. Fuller State Park accommodates. For those who prefer creature comforts, about $35 will get you laundry and bathhouse access, power, a grill site and other modern conveniences.
From playing tennis and watching migratory birds to discovering unequaled vistas or cooling off with a summer swim, T.O. Fuller is a great example of how Memphis always has something to offer. Whether you’ve made this city your home or are just passing through, this spot should definitely make it onto your itinerary.

]]>Why is Memphis one of the South’s greatest startup incubators? While entrepreneurs freely admit that the city isn’t some kind of Silicon Valley clone, its unique cultural assets and resource infrastructure make it possible to ditch the blueprint and succeed in your own way.
Memphis is a great place to start a business. In addition to a cheaper cost of living, more affordable office space, and a thriving workforce population, entrepreneurs can draw on relationships with their peers: The city’s reputation as an innovation hub makes it easy to connect with partner startups that haven’t lost their spark of inspiration.
This region also caters to companies that want to settle down. The established industry means that you don’t have to search far for supply chain companies, staffing assistance or business service providers that can help you scale up. The presence of local firms like ServiceMaster, which owns numerous service companies, also makes this a good place to start a franchise.
Memphis’s river location has always made it a huge hub for commerce. While things may look a lot different from how they did in the days of pioneering river traders, the steady development of highways and rail has rendered today’s city just as integral to the exchange of goods.
Memphis transportation jobs come in many forms. As home to companies like FedEx and Ozark Motor Lines, this is a good place to get directly involved in logistics operations as a driver — or work your way up to an executive role that lets you transform the entire industry.
Tennessee isn’t the only southern state that caters to the film industry, but it’s one of the few with a sustained track record of success. The city’s astounding musical output has set the perfect mood for countless box-office hits. The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission’s support for auteurs, writers, cast members and crews also makes it easy to get a production steaming forward successfully.
Filmmakers who come to Memphis commonly discover untapped talent. From theater programs that hide the next big stars to visual art studios that might just inspire radical new set designs, you’ll never find a better place to cultivate a bold artistic vision.
Memphis is a unique city with a reputation for attracting amazing talent that powers industries large and small. How will you make your impression on the professional landscape?

]]>Bloggers, food personalities, chefs and other culinary stars gathered in November 2018 to spend some time discussing what makes Memphis food special. Attendees hailed from as far away as Germany, Chile and South Africa, as Saveur issued its choice awards to food and travel bloggers, the elite food photographers and those who influence what we think about food.
Those who came to Memphis for the two-day experience were exposed to some of the best Memphis has to offer. Beyond the briskets and other meats that are traditional to Memphis barbeque, the group was treated to local charcuterie, wines and craft beers, as well as Cuban-inspired fare from local restaurateur Lisa Toro. Dining on Cuban biscuits, sandwiches and specialty cocktails gave a different perspective of the type of Memphis food offered that goes beyond what is considered traditional Southern food.
Those who attended the event were treated to a surprise field trip. They were taken to a lunch that was provided by local restaurant favorite Four Way Restaurant. Located at 998 Mississippi Boulevard in the city’s historic “Soulsville” neighborhood, it has been providing down home meals since 1946, nearly 75 years. It was a favorite spot for dining for civil rights leaders like the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Diners got to taste truly American food, including greens and okra, fried catfish, turkey with dressing and other classically soul-inspired food. A panel discussion featuring Cynthia Daniels, founder of Memphis’ Black Restaurant Week and Four Way owner Patrice Bates Thompson helped hammer home the point on how diversity shapes the Memphis food scene and inspires locals from all walks and shades to contribute to the city’s culinary reputation.
The rest of the world is coming to learn what locals and tourists already know about Memphis food; it is a favorite food in America. The offerings of soul food, barbeque and other local, regional and national cuisines place Memphis on par with other cities across the country. Whether it’s a visit to Four Way Restaurant, or ribs at Central BBQ (or any of the great barbeque restaurants in Memphis) spending time dining in Memphis can give a great perspective of why the world came in November 2018 to celebrate Memphis food!

]]>Making Money Magazine’s Top 100 list in 2007, it has become the ninth largest city in the State of Tennessee. There is plenty to see and do in Bartlett, TN, which offers a slower pace than the larger City of Memphis. Visitors and others to the area should make time to travel the 13 miles east to see what the area has in store.
Bartlett began as an agricultural area, containing many of the region’s major plantations. After the Civil War and incorporation as a city (along with the change in name), it remained a small farming community until the late 1960s. The city grew from a population of just over 500 in 1960 to double that in 1970, with rapid growth occurring from 1990 on.
The City of Bartlett provides a quiet respite for those who enjoy living and working in Memphis and Shelby County. It is close enough to the action but tucked away just far enough to offer a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its growth was spurred by a desire to get away from the rapid urbanization taking place in Memphis while maintaining enough of a connection to the Bluff City.
There is plenty to see and do in Bartlett, TN. Among the city-sponsored events are:
You can link to the past and get a glimpse of what Memphis was like. Bartlett, TN is more than a unique suburban community; it is a growing place of interest for residents and visitors alike. Spending time in Bartlett gives you a different perspective of the greater Memphis area and a chance at seeing a good change of pace.

]]>The post Tips to Market Your Memphis Business on Social Media appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>This is where most businesses in Memphis get themselves into trouble. They create social media profiles and try to go after everyone. But going after everyone won’t appease anyone. While it would be nice to attract everyone to your business, you need to first understand your target audience. This way, you can create content on your social media channels that will better connect with your target audience.
Segment marketing is a good thing to practice on your social media account. This is because while you need to know your target audience, there is a chance you might have several targets. For example, your key audience might be composed of college students and older professionals. As each target audience will connect with different marketing materials, you don’t want to create the same materials for everyone. By segmenting your social media content, you will better connect with the varying target audience.
Not all social media platforms are created equal. Knowing your target audience will help you decide which platform is right for you. You will need to have a Facebook profile regardless as this is the largest social media outlet used by the largest number of individuals. Many will turn to Facebook over websites when searching for store information.
Beyond Facebook, though, younger demographics are more likely to use Snapchat and Instagram, while you may want to maintain a blog on professional sites like LinkedIn (you should run a blog anyway as it will help boost your website SEO).
If you’re not taking advantage of live video now, you should be. Why? It instantly puts you in front of all your followers. On Instagram, when you go live, your video feed will be highlighted and put in front of all other storylines. This is true as well when running a video feed on Facebook. YouTube will send out notifications to your followers that you are going live as well.
Basically, live video works as a way to constantly promote your content and put it ahead of all other accounts your subscribers follow.
Part of having social media accounts is remaining active. You can’t just post once ever few weeks. You need to post at least once a day. You also need to reply to those who post on your content in order to properly market your buiness in Memphis.

]]>The post Love throwing axes? Is that even a question? appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>When you come out to Civil Axe Throwing, you’ll find a number of axe-throwing options available.
First, there is the one-hour axe-throwing session. You can either throw with someone else, on your own, or throw with other individuals who want to take part in the activity (it’s a great way to make new friends).
There are axe-throwing leagues for when you are feeling a bit more competitive. The eight-week league allows you to form up with a team and compete against other teams. So whether you are going in blind and want to have some kind of competitive element added to your axe throwing or you have been practicing and feel good about your skill, the eight-week league is the perfect option for you.
If you’re looking for a way to entertain a large group of people, why not consider coming out to take up axe throwing in Memphis? Civil Axe Throwing offers group events; you can book portions of the facility for eight to 50 people. Just contact Civil Axe Throwing ahead of time to book your slot.
If you’ve been looking for fun things to do in Memphis and want to give throwing axes a try, here are a few things you need to know ahead of time.
First, it costs $20 an hour for a ticket. Each “booth” is made up of eight tickets per hour. This means you can fit up to eight people per booth. If you want to make sure the booth is all yours, you will need to purchase all eight tickets. If not, you may be partnered with other people (although typically only during busy hours).
There is no requirement for shoes. However, it is a good idea to wear closed-toed shoes (open-toed shoes and heavy-bladed objects usually do not go well together). Outside of this, you can wear whatever shoes you might like.
There is an age limit for throwing axes; you need to be at least 14 years of age to take part. As long as you meet this requirement, you will be fine to take part in the activity. For any other questions, feel free to contact Civil Axe Throwing.

]]>If you were to look at a map of the United States, you’d find numerous cities named after other cities around the world. Athens, Florence and Dublin are just a few of these cities. But did you know that Memphis is named after a historical city? It’s true. Memphis got its name from Memphis, Egypt, which has been abandoned since the seventh century and is located about 12 miles south of Giza. However, the city lost favor after the invasion of the Roman Empire. By the time the Byzantine and later the Coptic periods took place, the city had become a shell of its former glory. Eventually, conquering Arabs dismantled many of the stone temples of Memphis to help build a new capital in the region.
Like much of the region, before European settlers began to build a new city, Native Americans called the area home. It was an important trading center with its location on the Mississippi River. Eventually, European forts were constructed in the area to help increase trade. Memphis was founded in 1819 by Andrew Jackson, James Winchester (a brigadier general who served in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812) and John Overton.
If you’re an Elvis fan, you may already know that Elvis Presley made Memphis his home after his family pulled up shop and moved from Tupelo, Mississippi, following World War II in 1948.
Memphis is one of the most important musical cities in the world. Music that went on to be known as rock ’n’ roll was first recorded at Sun Studio, which is just outside of downtown Memphis. (Of course, the term was coined by a Cleveland disc jockey, which is why the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland, Ohio.)
Of the first 100 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 24 came from within a 100-mile radius of Memphis. Additionally, Memphis is mentioned in more songs (over 400, according to Billboard magazine) than any other city in the world.
If you love the great outdoors, you will love Memphis. Despite being an urban city destination, it has one of the top urban park systems in the entire country, with over 7,000 acres of parkland.

]]>One reason why you might select Memphis over other destinations isn’t just because of its centralized location or less expensive properties than New York or Los Angeles. It’s because of the tax incentives. You want a location that will help you save money while boosting productivity and profits. There are a number of tax incentives available to you when you move your business to Memphis.
Through the Greater Memphis Chamber, you can search through the different incentives available to your business. This includes tax incentives, infrastructure and utility incentives, training and workforce incentives, plus financing incentives. So prior to any move, make sure to check out the Greater Memphis Chamber website for all financial opportunities available to you.
Beyond the incentives open to all businesses moving into Memphis, there are added perks of owning a small business or being a minority running a business. The Tennessee Business Enterprise Resource Office (BERO) offers a number of business plan development services, which can include everything from B2B networking to assist with procurement. Before opening up shop, you should look into these services to find out if, or how, BERO can help you save money and get your business up and running faster.
If you’re moving equipment and goods from another city, you will need to book a moving company that is well respected and accredited. This way you know you’re working with a quality service provider who will get your company to Memphis in one piece. While the exact moving provider will vary depending on where you’re located, you need to consider BBB accredited companies and then go with the moving company that best fits your commercial and business needs. You can visit the BBB.org website for more information on accredited moving companies that can transit all of your business material from your current destination to Memphis. After all, you have all kinds of work to put in prior to the move. Having a professional take care of the moving services for you can make things that much easier (and give you one less thing to stress over).

Sponsored by local company FedEx, the game is held in September at the start of the college football season at the historic Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It is one of the premier Memphis events and a signature Memphis football game that brings fans from all over town and beyond.
Whether you’re a casual observer of college football or a rabid fan who enjoys any reason to get on a plane and travel to Memphis, the game can serve as the perfect backdrop to many different things to do in the city. Come to the Southern Heritage Classic, scheduled to kick off during the week of September 11–15, 2019, and discover the best big city west of Los Angeles. Discover why you (and your family or friends) should plan to enjoy this Memphis sports event and see two HBCU teams clash under the bright lights of the Liberty Bowl at the Southern Heritage Classic.
The game, the 30th in this showcase of HBCU teams, is a huge draw for fans of HBCU football. Among the games played by these schools, it is the fourth best-attended event during the college football season among classic-style games. It has traditionally featured the schools Jackson State (MS) University (Tigers) and the Tigers of Nashville-based Tennessee State University. Since the first matchup of these schools in 1990, Jackson State and Tennessee State have together earned more than $10 million in revenue toward their general student scholarship funds and other programs to further educational opportunities for students.
The game has also been an economic boon for the area as well, netting more than $21 million in economic impact for local businesses. The growth of the game, which also includes sponsors Allstate Insurance, AutoZone, Nike and Carrier along with FedEx, has proved a huge benefit for everyone involved. The game also gives local Memphis a chance to show off a bit as it is aired on the FOX SportsSouth network.
There are many ways to celebrate the Southern Heritage Classic. Some of the events that are tied directly to the game itself include:
In addition to these events, visitors should take the time during their stay (whether one day or all four) to immerse themselves in the local Memphis scene. There is much to do and see around the city, including walking tours of many of the historically significant landmarks in the city, including the Lorraine Hotel, home to the National Civil Rights Museum; and Sun Records Studio, where many great artists (including Elvis Presley) got their start.

]]>This is a small suburb just to the east of Memphis. It has a comfortable, small-town feel, as if you went back in time. If you enjoy being in a smaller environment or want to get away from the larger crowds of Memphis from time to time, this is the destination for you. In the city’s park square, a weekend concert series takes place during the summer. Many are local acts, but you’ll also find some traveling attractions and music from around the world. So if you’re looking for enjoyable, low-key summer fun, head on out to Collierville.
This is the annual music festival that takes place during the fall months in Cooper-Young. It is put on by the local indie Goner Records label. At the festival, you’ll find a number of psyche rock and garage band groups (which are typically signed by Goner Records).
Located in Midtown, tucked away within Overton Park, this museum is small but interesting. In Overton Park, you’ll also find a number of other interesting attractions, including the Memphis Zoo and the Memphis College of Art. This section of metro Memphis will have something for everyone to enjoy. You can also hop on over to the Children’s Museum, which has science and exploratory activities that younger children (and parents) are sure to love.
This is a bit of a stretch in terms of distance, but if you are into literature, William Faulkner’s home is located in Oxford, Mississippi, which is approximately a 90-minute drive from the Memphis town center. Oxford is worth mentioning as it is a town steeped in local history (of course, it’s also home to the University of Mississippi). Faulkner’s home, known as Rowan Oak, is just one of the attractions worth checking out.

]]>With $15 billion allocated for recent, current and planned development in Greater Memphis, we have a platform for unprecedented Memphis growth. It’s not just ServiceMaster. All across the Riverfront, we’re seeing new projects — major projects — going up, like Union Row, the largest private investment in Memphis history at more than $900 million for a building featuring a 30,000-square-foot market, nearly 800 apartment units and 350,000 square feet of office space, not to mention hotel, parking and retail space.
Other projects include dramatic renovations and expansions like the $28 million going toward the Tennessee Brewery, vacant since 1951, now being transformed into a 136-unit apartment building in the South End. Methodist LeBonheur is going to help bring a surge of health care and education jobs to the city with a $280 million expansion to the master campus, including a 450,000-square-foot tower.
These projects are not cherry-picked; there is simply too much momentum in every direction to give all of it the attention it deserves, such as the $1 billion FedEx renovation at its Memphis International Airport Super Hub, Indigo Ag bringing 700 full-time jobs to downtown Memphis and establishing a headquarters at the Toyota Center, as well as AutoZone, St. Jude and International Paper undergoing drastic expansions. We’re going to see a 550-room Loews hotel and a $175 million renovation of the Memphis Cook Convention Center. This is just scratching the surface, and we’re already running out of space.
The sheer numbers we see at play communicates that this is not just a few new buildings, but a city primed to be the cultural hub going into the new decade.

Chubby Checker at Graceland
Going to Graceland mansion, the historic home of Elvis Aaron Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, is typically the highlight of every visit to Memphis. If you want to see a rock and roll legend perform at the home of a legend, plan to get tickets for Saturday, June 22, to see the one and only Chubby Checker. Plan on twisting the night away at the Graceland Soundstage, located on the grounds of the historic home.
Memphis Italian Festival
Memphis is home to many distinct and diverse cultures. June 1 is a chance to kick off the month and celebrate one of those cultures, Italy. The Memphis Italian Festival is a chance for you to join the family, experience food and music, and feel the abbondanza (Italian for abundance) of Italian culture. The festival will be held in Marquette Park (4946 Alrose Avenue) and goes from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. The cost each day of the three-day event, which begins on Thursday, May 30, and ends on June 1, is $10.
Memphis Redbirds Baseball
The Memphis Redbirds are a minor league baseball team that plays in the Pacific Coast League. The Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals is the defending PCL champion and plays home games at AutoZone Park, located in downtown Memphis (200 Union Avenue). The team has 15 home dates in June, which gives you plenty of opportunity to come out to the ballpark and watch championship-level baseball. The Redbirds face these opponents in June:
Mid-South International Festival
The Mid-South International Festival is on June 29-30, 2019, at the Railgarten event venue (2166 Central Ave.). The event features international music, foods and dance and is an opportunity to experience many different cultures without a passport. The event is free to the public; the cover cost for large bands is $2. There is a shop for international arts and crafts, and you can experience an international wrestling event and sand soccer!
2019 Craft Food and Wine Festival
The Columns (1 South Main St.) is the home to the 2019 Craft Food and Wine Festival. Scheduled to be held Sunday, June 23, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., the tickets go for $55 to $115 per person. The proceeds from the event go to an excellent cause — to benefit Memphis’s Church Health Center, a local medical service that provides for residents who are uninsured or underinsured. The event is a chance to experience the culinary delights of Memphis, which is more than just barbecue.
This is just a small list of the fun things to do in Memphis in 2019. There are plenty of other fun things to see or do when planning to spend time in Bluff City. The best way to see all that the city has to offer in the summer is to simply plan your visit!

A concept shop is a destination where small artisans and business owners are able to showcase their goods. One of the main hang-ups for small business owners is the ability to get their products in front of customers. E-commerce is one way, but it is a crowded market. It’s often easier to push a locally crafted product to locals, but investing in the necessary real estate is also expensive.
With the help of City & State, small artisans in the area were able to highlight and showcase their products to people who came into their stores as well as to those who walked past.
As Toro saw the growth of City & State and the entire Broad Avenue Arts District, she wanted to expand her outreach to local business owners. However, she noticed that despite the growing professional community, women and minorities were not highly represented. To help, she decided to assist these business owners in landing real estate.
She went back and talked with her own professional network and went on to create the Broad Angels Network. Toro and her partners wanted to assist female and minority Memphis entrepreneurs who were struggling to move into a brick-and-mortar location.
Oftentimes, finding the right real estate at an affordable price point is especially difficult. With her Memphis Entrepreneurship programs, Toro has helped local professionals connect with banks and receive the necessary funding required to open up a business in the first place.
While Toro is assisting up-and-coming professionals with opening their dream businesses and getting them off the ground, she’s also helping through education.
Toro found that one of the biggest issues individuals face when it comes to opening a business isn’t necessarily the lack of access to loans, but it is the lack of understanding of how to secure these loans and other forms of financial assistance. There are loans, offered through the city of Memphis and the state of Tennessee, as well as federal loans, all of which are specifically designed for female and minority entrepreneurs. However, many business owners are not aware that these loans are available.
To help, Toro has worked with business owners to educate them about the documentation and financial information that is required to open such a business. It is her goal to clear up confusion about the loan process and how entrepreneurs can access such loans from local lenders.

]]>The post Job growth in Memphis is thriving and has reached the top of the charts according to Bloomberg! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>So just how well is the job market in Memphis doing? According to Bloomberg, Memphis, Las Vegas and Sacramento are the top three large metro areas in the entire country regarding job growth. To come up with the information, Bloomberg looked at the 10-year employment rate of each city to measure not only growth, but continued potential. Memphis jobs grew faster than any other large city in the United States.
Over the past decade, the city has seen nearly a 1.4 percent increase in the number of jobs available within the metro area. The number may not sound significant, but when compared to the overall number of jobs within the metro area, this 1.4 percent represents the addition of thousands of quality jobs, right in this singular metropolitan area.
So how did Memphis compare with other cities of a similar metro size? During this same time period, New Orleans saw a job growth rate of just over 0.8 percent, while St. Louis saw a growth of around 0.79 percent. Raleigh, North Carolina, saw a decrease in jobs by nearly 0.7 percent, and Minneapolis-St. Paul saw just about 1.20 percent fewer jobs over the decade.
The increase of thousands of additional jobs is great news for both current and future residents. This represents a healthy economy. A healthy economy means more money that is pumped back into the city through locally purchased goods and taxes. It also helps attract additional companies.
Success often attracts additional success. When other companies looking for a new landing spot see the success of a city and similar businesses, CEOs and founders of the companies want to take part. When looking at Memphis, they see a city with a vibrant market and a number of highly-skilled professionals. It is in an excellent location for distribution around the country, and it’s substantially more affordable than other markets in cities such as New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.
Memphis jobs continue to increase, so whether you are currently looking for work or you’re considering a move to Memphis, this isn’t anything but fantastic news. The blooming Memphis economy also means more restaurants and forms of entertainment will come to town, which helps improve the overall quality of living in the city as well.

]]>The post If Game of Thrones Was Located in Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Game of Thrones wrapped on Sunday, and let’s just say “it’s so hard to say goodbye.” As a faithful watcher of the show, it’s difficult to ignore the resemblance between the realm and the city of Memphis. One of the boldest comparisons is through the shared centering of families and their houses. Memphis is a city of families who are almost one degree of separation from the next family. You can always trace folks back to where they live or were raised by asking two simple questions “What high school did you attend?” and “What’s your church home?”
Give or take a few elements in the 8-year tv series, GOT houses easily mirror some of Memphis’ communities. If Westeros had a 901 zip code, here’s where you’d find some of your favorite characters and houses:
1. House of Stark – North Memphis
Two words: Not. Today.
Have you ever met anyone from Frayser?
Is your spouse a native of Smokey City?
Maybe you’re a teacher at Douglas or Craigmont High.
One thing is for sure: people from North Memphis don’t go down without a fight and even if they lose, they don’t stay down.
You can find Arya learning to fight at Ed Rice Community Center. Sansa is a graduate of Raleigh Egypt High and now acts as the Executive Director of the Frayser Community Development Corporation. Meanwhile, Bran sits in the middle of Ridgecrest Apartments listening to Yo Gotti all day, clapping at birds.
2. House of Lannister – Central/Chickasaw Gardens
The Lannisters are the richest family in Westeros. Can you not see Cersei standing at the top level foyer with a glass of red wine overlooking that lake in the middle of the Chickasaw Gardens community? Of course you can. Central and Chickasaw Gardens hold some of the finest families and homes in the city. Just ride through on a gorgeous summer day and admire the homes (unless you’re being creepy). There’s a hidden richness (no pun intended) in these areas.
3. House of Tyrell – Cooper Young/Midtown
So Olenna Tyrell – while perched on her porch across from Peabody Elementary – is the old lady you speak to when dropping your kids off but doesn’t speak back. Her garden is perfect and she shops alone at the Farmer’s Market in the parking lot of First Congregational. Margarey is often found at Cafe Ole, but more recently hangs out at Side Street Grill after Joffrey died, in search of her next king, but Loras got there before her at 4 p.m. Tommen rides through Overton Park on one of those Bird scooters, speaking to everyone on the Crazy Noodle patio until he was brought to an untimely demise attempting backflips on the motorized machine. His memorial was held at Rainbow Lake.
4. The White Walkers – (Elmwood Cemetery)
Some of the most notable Memphians who have ever lived are buried at Elmwood Cemetery, from civil rights leaders and politicians to racist confederate war generals. If they were to ever resurrect, we do hope Arya’s training from Ed Rice will come in handy.
5. House of Frey – South Memphis
The Red Wedding was facilitated, orchestrated and executed by someone from South Memphis. Period. Stone Bridge connects the two keeps of the Frey’s ancestral seat, the Twins. The new and old bridge is a dead giveaway that the Frey’s would reside in South Memphis with the house words, “We Stand Together.” People from South Memphis are extremely territorial, and they aren’t afraid to take action against those who break their promises. Walder Frey grew up around Hamilton but sent all his children (wives) to Booker T. Washington.
6. House of Targaryen – The Suburbs
If any Memphian would have dragons in their backyard, they would be in the suburbs because of all that acreage. All Targaryen’s are graduates of Collierville High where the mascot is, coincidentally, the dragon. It explains why Daenerys was attracted to men from the inner-city. Now that we know Jon Snow is really a Targaryen and therefore, a natural at riding dragons – it would only be right that we award him an honorary degree from Collierville.
7. House of Baratheon – Hickory Hill
Remember the 2008 tornado that took our Hickory Ridge Mall? People of Hickory Hill are Storm Lords, not unfamiliar with revitalization after disasters like the tornado. Since, the mall has been revived quite a bit. Folks from Hickory Hill are resilient people. They’re stylish, but they play to win like the Ridgeway High basketball teams. They know how to party and have a good time. Just stop by Winchester Bowl or East End Skating Rink and you’ll see what we’re talking about.
Tell us if we hit the nail on the head or the dragon on the Greyjoy. What house and Memphis community do you resonate with the most?

]]>You will find all of that and so much more in the city of Memphis.
If you were to look at the small business website of nearly every city, most of these sites will all say the same thing. You’d almost swear some websites just copied and pasted the same content from one city to the next. So with so many cities shoving each other out of the way, attempting to attract you, you need to sift through the advertising fog and uncover what really is important for your business to thrive.
First, you need access to employees who are capable of assisting with you and your development. And while you need access to a large workforce, you may not want to be bogged down with significant competition right out of the gate. After all, a small plant will not always survive when growing in the shadows of a larger tree. It needs its own ability to stretch its roots. That is what you receive in Memphis.
If you were to call Memphis home, you’d have access to big-city level workers, both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality. And yet you have the competition of a smaller town. Chances are, there is more than enough room for you to establish yourself and grow your company.
The first few years of a business will make or break it. If you can make it past the give year mark, chances are you’ll be around for the long haul. Usually, the problem is finances. It’s expensive to start a new company, advertise it, network, and connect with the right people.
The city helps support all startup businesses in Memphis. Memphis Entrepreneurs have access to all kinds of loans and grants. The 800 Initiative, which went into effect last year, is designed to help promote minority business owners. However, the city isn’t only assisting minorities and female business owners. The city is open arms to all companies big and small. So, if you have an idea, Memphis wants to help you connect with your audience and grow.
If you work in e-commerce and sell products online, Memphis is in a prime distribution location. Whether you’re shipping to Atlanta or Detroit, you can get your products out faster, which means happier customers and, in return, more return clients.
The landing site for your business is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when running a business. Let Memphis be that best decision you ever make for your company.

]]>The post How to celebrate Memphis’ Bicentennial! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>A new century of soul is not just a slogan; it is a call to all who live, love, and enjoy Memphis to play a part in shaping the next 100 years to come. The Memphis Bicentennial celebration is a chance for the city to show off its various development projects (e.g., Crosstown, One Beale, Central Station, Medical District, Methodist University Hospital, and St. Jude/The Pinch District). It brings together the business, arts, culinary, and scientific/research communities to celebrate everything uniquely Memphis and build on its progress toward bridging communities and working to create a unified Memphis.
Founded on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River (hence its nickname the “Bluff City”), Memphis is the overlook into southwestern Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and the northern part of Mississippi. It was founded on May 22, 1819, by, among its founders, General Andrew Jackson, who would go on ten years later and serve as the seventh President of the United States. The city has grown from an important center of trade for cotton, through immigration and post-war migration of free African-Americans, from around 40,000 residents in the 1860s to more than 1.3 million in 2017 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This makes Memphis the 42nd largest city in the U.S. by population and an important center in the Mid-South region.
Two hundred years has transformed Memphis into a metropolitan area that hosts major colleges and universities, a professional basketball team, a minor-league baseball affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, and major corporations and research facilities such as FedEx and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Two hundred years has helped bring together different population groups and together they have formed a new century of soul for this growing metropolis.
There are many events and activities planned around the Memphis Bicentennial Celebration. Each one is designed to pay tribute to the city’s past (all parts of it) and the important role Memphis has played in forming a nation. A look will be taken at the leaders in politics and civics, sports, entertainment and music, and the change-makers that are at the forefront of ushering in a new Memphis.
Thirty-eight distinct cultures make up Memphis. The Memphis in May International Festival looks to honor these cultures and their contribution to the city. Memphis Fashion Week in April will provide a platform for artists, models, designers, and stylists to show their work that is uniquely Memphis. The art of George Hunt and his commissioned work will be on display during the Art of Beale Street Music Festival, also in April. The music of Beale Street will also be played during the Beale Street Festival in May. Other events planned feature walking tours, a BBQ championship, concerts, and neighborhood-based activities. Plan to visit Memphis sometime in 2019 for its Bicentennial celebration and experience its true soul!

]]>The post Top 10 Rap Classics for Memphis Millennials appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>On any given day, however, you will see a Chevy Impala or Chrysler 300 – with subwoofers the size of the Exlines Pizza sign – blasting the hits of any one of Memphis’ rap superstars with the bass on max.
Hip-Hop, trap and gangster rap were birth as an underground music culture in the late 1980s and early 1990s when our parents were “gangster walking” in Club No Name or Crystal Palace. Legends such as DJ Spanish Fly and Kingpin Skinny Pimp laid the foundation for generations of southern rappers in Memphis and across the southern region, and the genre has since evolved.
From high school proms to Sunday brunches, here are the top 10 Memphis rap songs Memphis millennials hold near and dear to our hearts.
10. E.P. – Paperchase (Doin This), 2009
Find a high school or college party in Memphis that did not have wall-to-wall youth pumping their arms in bicep curl fashion while hopping back and forth on one leg. At the tender age of 17, Emanuel Patterson (now 27) shook dj’s and local radio stations with an unexpected release of his debut single with a dance to complement. The “paperchase” is for the aspiring hustler or the teen working at Best Buy after school to have enough money to buy cd’s and Mrs. Winner’s during school. “Watch me do that paperchase” speaks to the adage “Watch me prove you wrong” and I’ll see you in the club with a clean pair of Jordans. Chase on, brother!
9. Blocboy JB ft. Drake – Look Alive, 2018
Native Memphian, Blockboy JB, has nationalized the “shoot” dance, kicking one leg out while jumping on the other. After the dance and his namesake debut single went viral, he got a call from Drake who also has Memphis ties (his dad and family live here). Aubrey Graham (or Jimmy from Degrassi) came to Memphis for a few days to parlay on his old stomping grounds with Blockboy JB and another native Memphian, producer Tay Keith, to bring the streets “Look Alive.” A dedication to the grimy and dark corners of the city, “Look Alive” is a call for the hood to stay alert, stay woke and stay Memphis.
8. Rock Dillion, Da Volunteers ft. MJG – Favorite Color, 2006
The truth is Orange Mound is a cult. Ok, maybe cult is too harsh, but “Favorite Color” is for Orange Mound and Orange Mound only. Listen, if your pedigree doesn’t begin on the southernmost part of Park Avenue, you should just find a bar and sit down on this one. Historically, Orange Mound is one of the first African American communities in the country founded by African Americans. After a tumultuous era facing the drug and crime epidemic in the 70s and 80s, the community and its leaders remained steadfast in keeping Orange Mound bound by the values of community, closeness and self-preservation. Rap stars 8Ball & MJG, native Moundians, gave a platform to Rock Dillion and Da Volunteers and produced this clarion call for the area. This may be the only time UT gets this amount of love from Memphis. “Two fingers round, three fingers down” is the official orange mound hand sign (each community has one, ask your nearest local).
7. 8Ball & MJG – Pimp Hard, 2000
Let’s stay in The Mound. “Pimp Hard” was released in November 2000 on the group’s “Space Age 4 Eva” album. One of the few early Memphis groups to gain recognition outside the city, 8Ball & MJG glorified “Baller” culture. A nice car; few romantic options; a pocket full of cash, the definition of “Pimp Hard.” You can indeed find love in the Bluff City, or you can…uhhh, keep your options open.
6. Young Dolph – Get Paid, 2016
First and foremost, LeBron James listens to Young Dolph so you should, too. Adolph Thornton, Jr’s (34) encourages every young man to secure your financial future. Memphis prides itself on the grit and grind, the hustle and hoops. Young Dolph’s “Get Paid” spread across coasts quickly, motivating folks to increase their profits and their wallets.
5. Three 6 Mafia – Hard Out Here for a Pimp/Whoop That Trick, 2005
We know. We’re cheating a bit, but you can’t talk about Memphis without addressing two things: Three 6 Mafia and Hustle&Flow
Hard Out Here for A Pimp, another ode to the hustle culture, should come on your car radio as soon as your bluetooth connects, while Whoop That Trick is for your Saturday morning clean-up. Both featured in the Academy Award nominated Memphis film, Hustle & Flow, a story of hustle, pimping and rap dreams. Some still don’t care for the movie because the accents were all wrong, but we don’t hesitate to bob our heads when we hear either hit.
4. Gangsta Blac – S.O.U.T.H Parkway, 1999
Could there possibly be a more Memphis song than Whoop That Trick? Actually yes. There’s nothing more Memphis than representing your neighborhood and native communities. In 1999, Gangsta Blac dropped 74 Minutes of Bump with the hit “S.O.U.T.H Parkway,” paying homage to another historic residential community. It’s common to hear this song and recline your driver’s seat, roll down your windows and drive a few miles above the speed limit down I-240 in a Honda Accord coupe.
It’s a sacred homage to a community that refuses to cripple to any intimidation of poverty, crime or even gentrification. It’s still thriving and healthy with community efforts led by some of the very residents occupying.
3. Project Pat ft. Three 6 Mafia and La Chat- Chickenhead, 2001
Where to start?
First, you need a best friend who can sing this with you to fully enjoy this song.
Chickenhead may be the greatest Southern rap song of all time. Its melody and production style has been sampled and mimicked between trap artists, East Coast hustlers and West Coast bangers. Chickenhead is dedicated to the person who just wants to be left alone! It was “Gold Digger” before Kanye and Jamie Foxx penned a verse. Cardi B sampled it on her song “Bickenhead” on her Invasion of Privacy album.
Project Pat’s Mista Don’t Play album deserves a space in the Smithsonian. Only a few classics should receive such an honor.
Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon”
Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”
Project Pat’s “Chickenhead”
2. Playa Fly – Nobody, 1998
Did you just break up with your significant other?
About to quit your job? Got fired?
Are your parents riding you again about your college and career choices?
Have your friends posted pictures of them out drinking but they didn’t call you?
There has never been a song to move entire crowds to tears than Playa Fly’s “Nobody.”
This song is for those who realized they can do bad by themselves and need a safe way to not overreact while shutting yourself out from the community-at-large. Playa Fly still rules radio and Spotify’s with this hit. A former member of Three 6 Mafia, Playa Fly is a native South Memphian. His song came after he ended things with Three 6 and went solo. He needed to get the drama off his chest and “Nobody” was born. Fold your arms and bop to this emotional song of self-care and resilience. This was Beyonce’s “Me, Myself and I” before she knew she only needed herself. You don’t need nobody, ok? Godspeed.
1.Yo Gotti – That’s What’s Up, 2006
This is a Memphis millennial’s “Kumbaya.” This is our “Lean On Me.” This is our National Anthem.
Mario “Yo Gotti” Mims is indeed one of the Kings of Memphis and “That’s What’s Up” is the unofficial anthem of the city. From his mixtapes to trapping out of North Memphis, Yo Gotti gives a new meaning to Memphis pride with this one. “That’s What’s Up” is for the Memphian with a dream and a grind. After the prelude, he quickly goes into shouting-out his family, famous high schools, trap houses, friends, enemies, and eventually the entire city. It’s freedom. Entire stadiums have erupted in unison and in acapella belting this song. It is purely Memphis. It may or may not have reached national acclaim, but it surely has earned its keep in the Mid-South. You Gotti is ours. This song is ours. And now, it’s yours.

]]>The post A List of Memphis Museums appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>These museum and historical landmarks are easy for residents and visitors to identify with and top on the list of things to do in Memphis. But the Lorraine and Graceland are not the only museums that hold historic significance for not only the city, but the world. There are plenty of museums and cultural spaces in the area that everyone should plan to see. Here is a short list of five such must-visit places when in town.
1. Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium (3050 Central Avenue)
The Pink Palace Museum is the largest science and technology museum of its type in the mid-South. Nearly a quarter of a million visitors each year come to see and put their hands on exhibits ranging from archaeology to zoology and everything in-between. The museum is free to members and costs range from $10 for children up to $30 for adults, depending on the types of exhibits you want to see. All can enjoy free admission on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. until museum doors close at 5 p.m.
2. Brooks Museum (1934 Poplar Avenue)
Founded in 1916, the Brooks Museum is both the largest and oldest art museum in the State of Tennessee. It features a large collection of unique and diverse art which plays to the diversity of the Memphis community. The collection, which is ever expanding, features the works of artists who are local, national, and international. The museum also schedules various programs that discuss these and other works in its collection and the artist who created them.
3. Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum (191 Beale Street)
Memphis is the home to music. Its musical heritage dates back to the days in the early part of the last century on Beale Street, where free persons brought the music of their heritage to the city and created the forms we know as soul, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. These are all uniquely Memphis, and its contribution to the world of music is on display at the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul. Appropriately located on historic Beale Street, it is definitely one of the things to do in Memphis. It is one of the first museums born of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History that is outside of Washington, D.C.
4. Stax Museum of American Soul Music (926 E McLemore Avenue)
When the historic Stax Records went bankrupt in 1976, many feared for the fate of the old building on McLemore Avenue. Much like Berry Gordy’s home in Detroit, MI, which was home to Motown Records and the famed “Hitsville, U.S.A.” sound, what was to become to the place that was the birthplace to “Soulsville, U.S.A.”? The answer: A museum was created in 2003 to pay homage to the great acts that came out of Memphis, including Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, Booker T. and the MGs, and Carla Thomas, just to name a few.
5. The Cotton Museum (65 Union Street)
Memphis was the center of cotton trade during the period of time before the Civil War known as the antebellum South. It was such an important part of the local economy that an exchange building was built downtown at 65 Union Street to facilitate the trading of this important commodity. The old trading floor is now the site for the Cotton Museum. It was opened in 2006 and its designed purpose is to preserve the cultural history of cotton to Memphis. It boasts 100,000 visitors a year through its doors.
This is an incredibly short list of places that you should plan on seeing when you are in Memphis. Do some research and look up the additional places that provide you with a glimpse of the city’s rich history, culture, contribution to the world of music, and celebration of diversity and life.

]]>The post Union Row, a $950M development in Downtown Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Phase 1 of Union Row is set to cost nearly $512 million and will establish the necessary foundation for the rest of the project, which will cost another $400-plus million. The project itself will help create hundreds if not thousands of full-time jobs of varying skill sets.
The Union Row Phase 1 portion of the project will include 30,000 square feet of market and grocer space. It will also include 80,000 square feet of retail space, plus 350,000 square feet of office space. There will be a built-in hotel in the space with 200 rooms, plus residential apartment space with an estimated 793 units. There will also be ample parking available for Union Row, with over 2,000 spaces.
Before the start of the construction, the area of the city offered very little to the surrounding community. In fact, 65 percent of the area was vacant. This has left residents with fewer opportunities and has created a tax burden for the rest of the city because it still requires taxpayer money to power street lights at night and police the area. The massive project of Union Row will help provide the necessary boost in residents and businesses to make up for this lack of tax revenue.
Currently, it is believed that Union Row, once construction is complete, will make a $228 million annual impact. This will pay for the entire cost of development in only four years. It will also bring in an estimated 5,100 jobs when fully staffed. Additionally, the current land, prior to construction, brings in $50,000 of property taxes to the city. Following the completion of construction, it will bring in $3.2 million in additional taxes
The completion of Phase 1 will see the completion of the 200-room hotel and grocery store. It will also be the phase in which most of the apartment units will be completed. Phase 2 and Phase 3 will add on to the completed areas of the building. Construction of Phase 1 is set to be complete in August of 2021. This is the bulk of construction, so the remaining two phases will not take as long. An estimated time frame for the final two phases is not yet available as it will depend on when the city gives full approval for the beginning of the subsequent phases.
It is an exciting time for Memphis as construction projects dot much of the surrounding region. One of the largest planned projects is Union Row.

]]>Images Source: Germantown Performing Arts Center
This is one of the best performing arts centers in the entire state. And if you’ve never checked it out before you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the acts that come through. In fact, many of the top performing touring acts prefer to stop by Germantown because it’s easy to get in and out. So whether you’re looking for a comedy show, world class musician, or something unexpected, make sure to take a visit to the Germantown Performing Arts Center.
Whether you’re visiting Memphis for the first time or you’re a long time local, I always recommend Brooks Collection. Here you’ll find all kinds of antiques and boutique shops. Visiting the location is a great way to support local retailers and artists. Plus there are some pretty incredible things to see. You may have never realized you needed the brass-polished coat rack that says “Memphis,” or the antique bottle that reminds you of visiting grandma’s as a kid, but when you find it at one of these shops, it’ll bring back some wonderful memories.
There’s just something relaxing and invigorating about taking a stroll through botanical gardens. The Memphis Botanic Garden is located in East Memphis, as well as the Dixon Gallery & Gardens (in fact, both are within walking distance of one another). The Memphis Botanic Garden also has a fantastic children’s garden (called “My Big Backyard”). So whether you have a green thumb or just enjoy being around nature, stop by the gardens for a bit of personal relaxation.
Gonerfest is an annual music festival put on during the fall by Goner Records. Now, nobody is going to blame you if you haven’t heard of Goner Records before (we all can’t be keeping up on every record label now, can we?). However, if you’re a fan of garage bands, this is the kind of music festival for you. Goner Records brings in artists such as Guitar Wolf.
The Cooper-Young Festival (which is also the site of Gonerfest) is a great music and art festival that is a bit more mainstream than Gonerfest. It’s also a great chance to purchase little goodies made by local artists (such as hand crafted jewelry). You may also enjoy just listening to the music while you sample some of the best street food Memphis has to offer.
There’s always something fun and exciting to do in Memphis. And the beauty of Memphis is, you don’t always need to be right in the city itself to experience these activities and destinations.

]]>The post Buying a new home? Here’s how to calculate your property tax! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>When moving to Memphis, it is important to note that there are both county and city taxes. I’ve found that when determining taxes, many first-time home buyers will come up with one, but not the other, which is why they are surprised come tax time when they need to pay both city and county taxes.
Currently, for 2018, the Shelby County property tax for a home’s appraised value is 4.05 percent. Additionally, the city tax rate for Memphis is another 3.19 percent.
Should you move to the county but live outside of Memphis, there are reduced tax rates in neighboring cities. The tax rates for these cities are as follows:
To start, you need to know what your 2018 appraised value is. If you are buying a home, you should have the property appraised. The appraised value is not always what you end up paying for it. If there is a bidding war for the home, you may end up paying more than the current value of the property. In this instance, the appraisal will show that you owe less than what you paid for it.
Once you have the appraised value, it’s easiest to start with the county property taxes. For example, if your property was appraised for $150,000, you will multiply it by 4.05 (or 150,000 x 0.0405). This comes out to $1,518.75 for the county property taxes.
Next, you need to determine your city property tax. We will use the Memphis tax rate of 3.19 (if you live right on the city line, it is important to know what side of the street the line is on. It may be the difference of nearly two percent). Using the same calculation method of $150,000 for the property value, you will multiply it by 3.19 (150,000 x 0.0319). This comes out to $1,196.25.
So someone who owns a home with an appraised property value of $150,000 and lives within the city of Memphis will end up paying $2,715 for their home.
Hopefully, this helps you out with determining your property value taxes and what to expect come tax time.

]]>The post Party on top of the Peabody is back! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>There’s nothing better than an incredible view and an amazing party. That is exactly what guests receive when they step foot onto the rooftop of The Peabody during the summer. From April through August, The Peabody is home to some of the best nightlife in the entire city. So whether guests want to come out for a drink and take in the sunset or they want to dance the night away, something is always happening at The Peabody.
If there’s one thing both locals and visitors alike need to experience, it’s an evening on the rooftop at The Peabody. It has been repeatedly voted not only a “Top 10 Rooftop Bar,” but one of the “Best Pick-Up Joints” by the Memphis Flyer.
Nugget from Q107.5 FM and DJ Epic host Thursday night parties to help get the weekend started off right. Throughout the summer, new drinks are on offering as well as an assortment of bands and musical acts. Plus, the sunset and view of both the Mississippi River and the city can’t be beat.
For anyone looking to come out to The Peabody for the Thursday night party, both street parking and lot parking are available. Valet parking is also available at the hotel as well. Public transportation also stops at The Peabody.
There is always something to check out when you’re at The Peabody. While every Thursday is taken over by DJ Epic, there are other musical acts and events going on throughout the summer. One of the biggest nights of the year is on the 4th of July. This is the busiest party of the summer, so those who are looking to take in the night’s firework show with the best view in town should arrive early.
Other acts that will be stopping by The Peabody include the Bluff City Bandits, G3, Hillbilly Casino, the M-80s, Walrus and Ghost Town Blues Band. Additional guest information, dates and times (most start at 6 p.m.) are available directly through the Peabody Rooftop Party Facebook page. Check back often for updates on the latest events taking place on the roof.

]]>The post A New Hotel and Apartments Will Soon Rise at One Beale appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>One Beale is a two-part project that includes a multi-story Hyatt Centric hotel. The boutique hotel will have 227 rooms and a 15,000 square foot conference and meeting space. It will be housed in the historic Ellis Machine Shop and will bring a new riverfront restaurant, outdoor pool and rooftop lounge to the riverfront district.
A separate mixed-use residential apartment tower is also part of the project. This luxury apartment community will have 227 apartment homes as well as riverfront restaurant and office space. These apartment homes will add a residential component to the Memphis entertainment district while also helping to transform the waterfront. Current plans also include a public parking garage. While in development, One Beale will bring over 1,400 jobs to the area. Once open, the new development will create over 420 jobs.
While the current development includes the apartment tower and the hotel, future plans include the addition of a Class A office tower, which will bring even more development to the region. The development team is working with the Greater Memphis Chamber to find an anchor tenant, and then work on the office tower will begin.
One Beale is an excellent example of current Memphis growth, as the city continues to expand its offering and create a vibrant environment for business, life and entertainment. Current estimates indicate that One Beale could be complete by as early as 2020. For those of us who call Memphis home, this development is just the start of an exciting future in store for our community.

]]>The post A New Century of Development is underway! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Beale Street in Memphis is one of the best-known and most historic streets in all the United States. The history of the street dates back to the founding of the city, and yet the future will continue on with its legacy. One Beale looks to bring new opportunity to the city while transforming the Memphis skyline.
One Beale will transform more than 5.5 riverfront acres into a multi-use development. This development will cost an estimated $225 million with the first half of this getting underway in 2019. The building will host the Hyatt Centric hotel, residential space, plus additional retail and office opportunities for the growing community.
Central Station has long been a staple in the South Main District. However, in previous years, the building fell on harder times. That is why the new development is so exciting. With a $55 million budget, the new Central Station will be completely renovated, bringing in a boutique hotel plus commercial space.
Memphis is quickly becoming known as the epicenter of small business. Those with a dream of a startup or small business are coming to Memphis thanks to what the city has to offer, both in its desirable tax configuration (plus the lack of a state income tax) and the talent pool located here. Central Station will once again be a beacon in its district.
Fourth Bluff and Memphis River Parks Partnership are working to beautify the park space, with the hope of offering outdoor lovers additional features to help maximize their time while in the park. There will be outdoor space, perfect for picnics and gatherings outside. There will be new walking, hiking and biking trails along the river, not to mention buildings to host small-scale events (because sometimes it’s best to get out of the office and take in the natural surroundings of Memphis). With these renovations underway, 2019 will be an exciting year for lovers of the park.
There are a number of activities and events planned for the coming months (with more to be announced) to celebrate the Memphis Bicentennial. The Memphis in May International Festival is in its 42nd year, and it will bring the world to the city, as everything from unique activities to new museum exhibits will go on display for the event. Additionally, make sure to check out the Birth of Bluff City at local Memphis libraries (starting March 23), the 2019 Beale Street Music Festival (May 3 to May 5) and a Taste of Memphis (April 18).

]]>This celebration, taking place on May 25th, promises to be one of the highlights of 2019 for those living and visiting Memphis. May is just around the corner, and it’s good to know what to expect as preparations are being made for what is a year-long celebration of the founding of the city. Here are some of the things that have taken place leading up to the big 200th birthday celebration and some of the things you should expect from the Memphis bicentennial celebration.
This year-round celebration has focused on the history, culture, arts, music, sports and food that have all been a part of forming the city’s identity. It grew from a planned city on the banks of the Mississippi River to a fast-growing cultural and population center of 652,000 residents. The city has maintained many of its old traditions while embracing the advances and technologies of modern living to become the thriving metropolis that it is today.
Some of the events that have taken place or are going on prior to May 22 include those that celebrate every aspect of Memphis life. One example is the Pink Palace Family of Museum exhibit entitled, “Making Memphis: 200 Years of Community,” which celebrates the stories of the past, present and future of the city. Other events leading up to the big day include the 2019 Memphis in May International Festival Honors Memphis, a 42-year event celebrating the cultures of 38 countries in the world, and A Taste of Memphis culinary event scheduled in April.
May 22, 2019 is a date you should mark on your calendar and make plans to be in the city for a celebration to end all celebrations. The Memphis bicentennial celebration is scheduled to be held as a limited-seating large gala with dinner and entertainment. All 200 years that have formed the history of the city will be celebrated. The event will serve as the kickoff for the city’s bicentennial summer.

]]>Whether you want to see history or get away from it, Little Rock is your place to go. See the William J. Clinton Presidential Library or enjoy the Museum of Discovery. Take in the River Market District or visit the Rock Town Distillery. Whether you’re up for visiting the Arkansas Arts Center or the Little Rock Zoo, you’ll certainly find something to explore that’ll make the trip worth your time and effort.
As the capital of Tennessee, Nashville has a lot to offer. Visit the “church of country music” or see the city’s replica of the Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park. Visit Broadway or take a live walking tour. And above all, visit one of the famous food establishments such as Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack or Rolf & Daughters. You won’t leave disappointed.
Named after the British city of Oxford, there’s much to see and do on this day trip. Explore the campus of Ole Miss (with its many unique opportunities) or visit the famous, beloved home of William Faulkner. Enjoy the city’s farmer’s market (known as OXCM) or visit Big Bad Breakfast in the Mid-Town Shopping Mall. There’s truly something for everyone in this city.
Best known for being “the birthplace of Elvis,” this might be the only spot in the world that gets anywhere close to loving Elvis as much as we do. But — if you’re looking to put a little space between you and the king of rock ‘n’ roll — there’s more to this town than meets the eye. Visit the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway or check out the famous automobile museum. And, perhaps the greatest reason of all to go: Here, it’s acceptable to eat fried chicken with biscuits and gravy for breakfast.
This is the getaway on this list that’s not like the others. Water Valley has become a much-loved day trip location precisely because it’s an escape from the big city. Known for being a small, laid-back town with state forests and a decent brewing company, the reason to visit Water Valley is there’s really not much to do. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need. If you need some R & R for your heart and soul, this is your spot.
No matter what you choose to do, enjoy your time away! But just know that the best part of taking one of these day trips will be coming back home.

]]>Looking for some of the fun places to visit while in Memphis in 2019? Here is a list of the top five destinations that should be on your checklist of must-see destinations when you come to the “bluff city.” Of course, don’t limit yourself to these suggestions; make sure you make the most of your time in Memphis and take in all of the beauty that this city has to offer.
1. Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum
You may be familiar with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, or the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. You may not, however, be familiar with the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum in Memphis. The museum is located at 191 Beale Street, the street that is the birthplace of blues and rhythm and blues music. First started as a research museum of the Smithsonian Institution, it became the first such museum associated with the Smithsonian that is not in New York or Washington, D.C.
2. Cooper-Young Historic District
The Cooper-Young Historic District is a neighborhood area bordered by Cooper and Young Streets in the heart of the city. It is where budding artists, artisans, hipsters and the eclectic crowd hang out, drink coffee and make music. The neighborhood is unique and has a vibe all unto itself. Ask locals about the Cooper-Young festival that occurs every September.
3. The Player’s Championship (TPC) at Southwind (Golf)
You may not be a member of this prestigious course, home to the World Golf Championship TPC‒Southwind event up until 2018, but if you are planning a destination outing, wedding or corporate event, what better place than a tour-level golf course and club? The par 70, 7,244-yard course offers great views of the natural beauty all around Memphis.
4. The Peabody Hotel
Not too far from the banks of the Mississippi River lies the famous Peabody Hotel on 2nd Street downtown. Although fun can be had at a hotel, the Peabody Ducks are the real attraction here. The “duck march,” a tradition that dates back to 1940, involves a visit by these famous residents to the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
5. Orpheum Theater
The Orpheum is a historic theater house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you like the theater and really like to have fun taking in a touring Broadway show, the Orpheum is the place to go. Who needs to go to New York when you can travel to Memphis to watch a show in a bustling Northern-like Southern town?

]]>The post Why the Tennessee Brewery Renovation Is a Great Use of $28 Million appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Why is this $28 million addition and renovation initiative worth watching? Here’s what lies ahead for one of the South End’s most exciting projects.
Most Memphians instantly recognize the Tennessee Brewery building as an iconic downtown fixture. What few realize is that its history spans back more than a century to 1877.
The Tennessee Brewery is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture. With rounded arch designs and a fortress-like appearance, it’s an exciting taste of Old World design in the heart of a modern American city.
One of the coolest aspects of this building isn’t the fact that it was one of the biggest breweries of the late 1800s or that it survived Prohibition — it’s that the edifice stayed true to its style. Even though it filled its last bottles in the mid-1950s, it never gave up its unique aesthetic flair in favor of new Memphis growth trends.
What has this building been up to since stopping beer production and distribution? For years, the property’s owners debated whether to reclaim the venue or start anew. In 2014, however, the decision was made clear when the edifice popped up on the public’s radar in a new way. Following years of deliberation, it hosted well-attended Tennessee Brewery Untapped events with free live music. These popular pop-up gatherings proved to investors that even one of downtown’s weirdest-looking structures could win hearts and minds.
The Brewery made a perfect community venue in 2014 and 2015.
What’s going to happen to this one-time beer mecca? Memphians from all walks of life may soon get the chance to experience the federally recognized historic location personally as it’s transformed into 136 new apartments.
It’s as yet unclear how the Brewery’s new residential aspects might impact the open-air plan. Those who love elements like the attention-grabbing, heavily windowed facade probably don’t have to worry, however. Developers have taken their cues from history and public opinion to preserve as much of the structure’s personality as possible.
The Brewery project’s $28 million price tag may seem hefty, but it won’t break the bank — it’s but a sliver of a massive $15 billion revitalization fund. In short, this has all the hallmarks of a well-planned controlled growth initiative.
Unlike some other development projects, the Tennessee Brewery renovation is in good company. Thanks to the presence of national companies, such as ServiceMaster and AutoZone, the downtown core is experiencing somewhat of a boom. As if the riverfront views weren’t enough of a draw, the upward-moving jobs, fantastic food and music scene make the prospect of residency even sweeter.
The Tennessee Brewery is just one example of what can happen when a proud community rediscovers its roots. Memphis growth trends may yet be evolving, but this project is a sure indicator that they’re headed in the right direction.

]]>There are a number of incoming tenants and opportunities springing out of the New Bakery developmental deal. The largest is currently Orion Federal Credit Union, as it is moving its headquarters into the facility (in the portion of the building facing the old Cadillac dealership). The credit union will be fully moved in by the summer.
The Orion credit union will bring in 150 jobs into the building, and this makes up just a portion of the professionals who will be moving into the facility. Other tenants will make their way into the building as construction completes.
Some tenants are currently in discussion with property management to move into the building. This includes a second location for the Memphis Made Brewing Company. Should the brewing company move into the property, it will be part of a $5.7 million project (tentatively called “The Ravine”). More tenants will be announced in the coming months as construction moves along.
The new construction will bring a number of apartment options into the community. With around 290 apartments, these properties will begin renting out in the spring of 2020. There will also be a parking structure on site for tenants (both professional and residential).
The city of Memphis is a booming community. With over $15 billion in planned renovations and constructions, The Bakery is just another piece to the larger Memphis growth puzzle. At the conclusion of 2020, The Bakery and its $73 million renovations will breathe new life into the Edge District and the surrounding communities as it brings job opportunities and additional apartment options.
The former Wonder Bread Bakery will be known simply as “The Bakery” as it continues its development and construction. Currently, construction is set to be completed sometime in 2020, although as the construction is spread out, different portions of the building will be made available throughout the next 18 months. This will allow a flow of new tenants, both professional and residential, to move in over this time period. The new renovation is an exciting chapter in the Edge District, which is turning the page from a manufacturing destination for baked goods to a new facility that is designed for a wider number of job opportunities.

]]>The post A Brief History of Memphis Music appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>No discussion about American music can be complete without a discussion about Memphis. Memphis is, hands-down, home to much of what we know as modern American music. Soul, gospel, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, and other genres of music all have their roots in the city. Three specific landmarks exist in the city as a tribute to Memphis music history heritage: the Blues Hall of Fame (421 S. Main Street); Rock and Soul Museum (191 Beale Street); and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, at 926 E. McLemore Avenue at the site of the original Stax Records.
The Memphis Music History is as old as the city itself. At the beginning of the last century, Memphis was a convergence of African-American commerce and culture. Traditional spirituals handed down from generations of enslaved blacks to free people became the foundation for the blues and artists like W.C. Handy. Handy is often called the “Father of the Blues,” having brought his band to Memphis in 1909 to play in the clubs on Beale Street to showcase this distinctive style of music.
Memphis is host to many who have come through the city to play Beale Street or make their mark in “Bluff City.” Along with Handy and the blues came the introduction of the electric guitar in 1945 (after World War II) and with it, the advent of a newer form of music called rock ‘n’ roll. Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and others recorded tracks in the famous studios of Memphis and further solidified the city’s influence on the music of this country.

Two of the best locations to visit Memphis Music History are Sun Studio and Stax Records
Sun Studio, located at 706 Union Avenue, was started by one of the fathers of rock ‘n’ roll, Sam Phillips, in 1950. It was the commingling of the Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records that formed Sun Studio, and until 1969, it was the producer of acts and artists such as B.B. King, Ike Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis and of course, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. The studio’s claim to fame is that it is where the first rock ‘n’ roll record was produced: “Rocket 88,” in April 1951.
Stax Records was born in 1957. The original Stax was named Satellite Records until it changed its name to Stax in 1961. The company brought to the forefront American and Memphis soul, as well as gospel, funk and the “Delta” blues. Its most famous act was Otis Redding, and after his death in 1967, the studio struggled to stay in competition with Detroit’s Motown.
The music of Memphis has evolved from its long, rich history. The legends of the past have created a legacy that newer artists can only hope to imitate but never really duplicate. A walk along Beale Street should invoke the memory of the great musicians who have come to and played in Memphis. It is also a great place to connect with the city’s musical past, present and future!

Memphis is a city you truly need to see to believe. While the best way to do this is to actually visit our great city, we want to highlight some of what you can expect on such a visit. That is why we wanted to showcase some amazing photos that will make you want to visit Memphis as soon as possible.
Memphis is a beautiful city at all times of day. But here is a picture of the city at dawn, while many of the residents are still asleep, and the city itself is just waking up. It highlights the fact that Memphis isn’t just a large city. There’s plenty of park space surrounding the city. It also has beautiful architecture and a great riverwalk. There truly is something for everyone here in Memphis.
Downtown Memphis isn’t all tall skyscrapers and massive buildings. As you can see from the photograph, it has a very down-to-earth feel, from its cobblestone drive to the locally owned restaurants, bars, music joints, and clothing shops. This is what America used to look like just a few decades ago, but many cities abandoned this look in favor of what was new and shiny. In Memphis, you’ll experience an incredible blast from the past while at the same time taking in what truly helps make the city incredible.

Memphis is full of quirks. It’s unique in just about every way. There’s a reason this area of the city was voted as one of the best streets to walk in the whole country. The vibrant signs are all different and each represents a locally owned business. You’re not going to find a Tater Red’s anywhere else. Nor are you going to take in the same experience anywhere else as you do at BB King’s Blues Club. This blues guitar legend opened up the club and—while the man himself may no longer be around—his music lives on forever. So whether you’re interested in just walking the street or you want to stop in for world-class culture, you’ll never find anything else like what you’ll discover in Memphis.
The city of Memphis is an incredible destination. Whether visiting for pleasure or moving to the city for good, you’ll always find something new and exciting to take in. While the best way to experience the city is to visit it first hand, these were only some of the many amazing photographs that highlight just how special a place Memphis is.

]]>The post ServiceMaster is bringing a brighter future to Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>ServiceMaster is a global holdings corporation that owns a number of small businesses. Some of the best-known businesses it operates include Furniture Medic, Merry Maids, ServiceMaster Restore, Terminix, Terminix Commercial and AmeriSpec (to name a few).
The vast majority of businesses ServiceMaster runs focus on pest control, janitorial services (both commercial- and residential-based), plus furniture repair and disaster response. Because these needs are desired throughout the United States, ServiceMaster has managed to expand its business operations to include 13,000 corporate employees, plus 33,000 additional independent employees. As of 2015, the company brought in $2.59 billion in revenue.
For the better part of the company’s history, it called the Chicago suburbs of Downers Grove home. However, as the business expanded, so too did the office of operations for the smaller companies ServiceMaster owned. In order to centrally locate itself and bring the smaller companies together, ServiceMaster moved its main office to Memphis.
More recently, ServiceMaster moved away from East Memphis into Peabody Place, located in downtown Memphis. The company first started the move in 2016 and completed it in 2018. With its headquarters now centrally located in the heart of Memphis, it’s looking to become a major face within the city.
Peabody Place first took shape in downtown Memphis back in 1993. Eventually, though, smaller businesses moved out of the building, leaving it all but vacant in downtown Memphis. ServiceMaster saw the opportunity to rejuvenate this area of downtown while also better positioning itself within the city. The enclosed mall at Peabody Place has a total of 300,000 square feet, giving the company and all of its smaller branches plenty of space to expand.
The building is also famous for having, in extremely large letters on the roof, “come downtown and play,” which is visible from the air and can be seen if using the Google Earth application (it also appears when using the map mode of Google Maps and driving downtown).
Downtown Memphis has seen a drastic uptick in renovations and new construction in recent years. Beyond ServiceMaster bringing its headquarters to downtown, the city itself has experienced both current and planned development valued at $15 billion.
The planned development will not only bring in new development and help beautify the downtown area, but important jobs and new opportunities for current residents. And this momentum will only continue.

]]>For 42 years, Memphis in May has brought the world to Memphis by saluting the cultures of 38 different countries. But this year, instead of saluting a country, Memphis in May will honor a city. A city with a rich heritage and colorful history. A city whose culture has impacted the world, and is poised for an even greater brighter, future. For 2019, Memphis in May’s annual salute will honor our hometown, the city of Memphis!
2019 will mark a momentous milestone for Memphis, and Memphis in May will join in celebrating our city’s 200th anniversary and welcoming the next 100 years to come. This is an opportunity to further elevate Memphis with our global reach sharing the history, culture, and vision of Memphis and Shelby County.
Memphis has changed the world and will continue to do so. We’re a city of doers, dreamers, and believers. We create, we invent, we experiment, and this year we invite the world to experience our beautiful home on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Bluff City, home of the blues, soul, and rock-n-roll. A city where grit and grind are more than our team’s slogans, they are who we are. Determined, passionate, authentic, soulful, and unstoppable.
The bicentennial isn’t just a celebration of the last 200 years. It’s a celebration of the things to come. And there are a lot of things coming for the city. From billions of dollars in construction to new business partners and a growing economy, there is much to look forward to in the years to come.
That is why the theme for the celebration is “A New Century of Soul.”
Memphis has always been about its heart. From the very founding of the city to where it is today, the heart and soul of its citizens are the lifeblood, pumping new ideas from its core. A New Century of Soul is a celebration of exactly that.
The bicentennial celebration is set to kick off on April 26. This begins a two-day festival in which those interested can take part in the world-famous Tennessee Whiskey Trail. At the main location of the festival, distillers from not just Memphis but around the state will come to show off their finest products. It’s an opportunity to experience some of the best American-produced spirits.
For those who are not whiskey enthusiasts, there will still be plenty of other activities to take part in on April 26 and 27.
May 22 is the official birthday of Memphis. The birthday will be hosted by the United Way Mid-South, and volunteers will come together on this day to provide aid to areas around Memphis. Whether it’s help cleaning up portions of the city or other donations, United Way wants to help Memphis residents beautify the city.
Now, everything comes to a head on May 25. This is geared to be the largest celebration the city of Memphis has every seen. More information on everything (and everyone) taking part on May 25th will come out as the date approaches. However, it will be hosted by Memphis in May and will take place in Tom Lee Park.
The beginning of the celebration will honor all the people and neighborhoods that have made Memphis what it is today.
Of course, the bicentennial celebration is not just one day. It’s an entire year. It continues on for the Audacity Fest, which kicks off on September 27.
Then the official last day of the celebration (right before the winter holidays) is November 24, where Shelby County 200 and each municipality will come together to close out the ceremony and the year at Shelby Farms Park.
Join us as we celebrate what makes Memphis unique. From it’s iconic music to it’s contribution to global cuisine. We’ll salute our innovators and creators. The attractions and soulful spirit of Memphis that draws millions from around the world to our city.

]]>Saucy Chicken, a fast-casual restaurant offering traditional Southern cuisine, is now open in Crosstown Concourse, Suite 137, in the former Mama Gaia’s space.
Following the closure of Mama Gaia inside the Concourse, many believed the space would go vacant for some time. After all, it takes the right fit for a new restaurant to move into the opening left by a previous restaurant. However, Saucy Chicken has swooped in and made it its own. And for chicken lovers out there, this may be one of the best new chicken destinations in all of Memphis.
Saucy Chicken proves it is all about chicken, but that there is a kind of chicken for everyone. Yes, there are the delicious chicken wings, which are great for ordering and going back home to enjoy while watching your favorite sporting event, but there are so many other chicken options available.
You can opt for a chicken sandwich, made with many of the same spices and seasonings as with the wings but on a chicken breast. You can also go sauce-free if you’d rather enjoy the perfectly cooked breast instead. Or you can have it served over a bed of romaine lettuce and all the fixings of a beautifully delicious salad. If there is a kind of chicken you enjoy, chances are Saucy Chicken makes it.
But here’s the thing: You don’t need to be a chicken lover to enjoy Saucy Chicken. In fact, there are plenty of dining options. The deep-fried shrimp are crispy yet moist, plus there are sandwich options that do not simply revolve around freshly prepared chicken breasts. You can opt for lunch meat chicken or turkey, or you can go with one of the other sandwich options.
There are also some of the best sides served up in the Concourse. If you’ve been craving hush puppies, you’ll find them right here. You’ll also find potato salad so good you’ll want to eat it both as a side and on top of your sandwich. The french fries are made with a special seasoning that gives each bite just enough crispy tang, spice and sweetness.
For a restaurant to make it in Memphis, it needs to be good. When a city is known for incredible food, it has a way of pushing out those that do not live up to what restaurant-goers expect. This restaurant came up in September of 2018 and has made a name for itself. If you haven’t had Saucy Chicken before, you owe it to yourself to try it out. So whether you’re a chicken fan or just hungry for a great-tasting lunch, head on over to the concourse and discover why Memphis Business Journal has been raving about Saucy Chicken.

]]>The post Travel Channel said Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>In a recent article, the Travel Channel stated that Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!
With things like our world-famous barbeque, our impact on the civil rights movement, and our works of art, it’s no wonder why we are on their radar.
Memphis is a cultural melting pot in the South. It’s also an easy destination to travel to, no matter where you might be coming from. Whether you’re flying from New York or driving down from Indianapolis, it’s easy to visit, which is one of the reasons why it is such a hot destination.
Travel Channel highlighted a number of reasons why Memphis is such an excellent travel destination for this summer. Why? Because there’s something for everyone to do, no matter the age.
Summer is the perfect time for families to get out and travel with school no longer in session. Because of this, the perfect destination needs to have activities for children of all ages. Yes, you’ll find plenty of cultural sights for educational purposes, and what child doesn’t love some sticky, messy BBQ? But beyond all of this, there are fun outing activities that both you and your children will love.
There’s no limit to the activities you and your family can take in. With the hundreds of possible southern locations Travel Channel could have selected as its hottest southern travel destination, the reason it picked Memphis was because of these limitless activities.
You can visit the River Line Trail, which was just recently renovated and finished. With kid-friendly activities along the water, fun tree houses, a 30-acre Tom Lee Park, plus festivals taking place throughout the summer, this is a prime destination when you want to get outside, take in the water, and enjoy your time with your family.
Are you an Elvis fan? Even if you were born after the King of Rock passed on, you’ve likely heard his music and know just how important he was to moving the music scene around the world forward. Well, you owe it to yourself to discover Graceland. While in Memphis you can visit the King’s music room, and a fan favorite “Jungle Room,” which is the literal definition of a Man Cave. Just make sure to pick up the Elvis favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich (which is, naturally, deep friend).
Make Your Own Memphis Memories
We could list out the hundreds of reasons why you should come to visit Memphis. From the food to the music to the culture to the festivals. But that takes some of the fun out of discovering Memphis for yourself. Travel Channel doesn’t just pick destinations on a whim. After all, it has television advertisements to sell, so it won’t make up random spots. It does its research and it puts its best foot forward so you can take advantage of its advice.
All of that is why you shouldn’t just read a list of things to do in Memphis. You need to come, explore, and make your own Memphis memories.

]]>The post TripSavvy picks Memphis as the best overall destination for 2019! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Every year, TripSavvy selects a brand-new top destination for the year. To do this, the website combs through everything from the destination’s cultural impact and tours to the food options and potential activities a visitor can take part in. For 2019, TripSavvy selected Memphis as its overall top destination for visitors.
As a local, I have known Memphis to be a beautiful, inspiring city. There’s something to see and experience around every corner. In the last several years, all kinds of exciting constructions and opportunities have breathed new life into the city. Not all of these new opportunities are exclusively for locals though. There are plenty of destinations for visitors, which is exactly why TripSavvy selected Memphis as the top city to discover.
The travel website highlighted Crosstown Concourse as one addition to the city that it found attractive. Built in the old Sears distribution warehouse, the renovated space has over a dozen recently opened restaurants. It basically takes the concept of the classic food court and ratchets it up to a whole new level.
Railgarten received a mention as well, with its 1.5-acre playground for adults. If you haven’t been there before, it includes everything from a classic tiki bar to an ice cream parlor, a ping pong room and a stage for live performances — and it even has a sandbox for adults.
It’s more than just the new establishments that attracted TripSavvy to the city of Memphis though. It also mentioned the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. While this destination has received a bit of a renovation in recent years, it is a classic historical museum that plays an important role in the city.
The website brought to light all the outdoor elements that nature lovers can take advantage of in Memphis. There is the city zoo, which has a brand-new hippo exhibit. It also points to the bike paths that connect throughout much of the city. It’s even possible to ride over the Mississippi River.
Memphis is king of the mountain when it comes to 2019 travel, according to TripSavvy. But what other cities did the travel website highlight (and TripSavvy beat out)? Some of the most notable cities include London, Toronto, Los Angeles, Portland, Tokyo and San Antonio.
That’s a pretty impressive list — which makes Memphis taking the top spot all the more impressive.
All of this highlights what I, as well as most other locals, already know: The city of Memphis is alive and bursting with new activities and historical ventures to experience.

]]>The post Forbes says Memphis could lead the way in minority owned businesses! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>According to Forbes, we’re spearheading the movement.
Whenever Forbes catches wind of business activity it either means something very good or very bad is happening within a specific sector of commerce. For Memphis, it is the former. Forbes’ contributing writer Elaine Pofeldt profiled the city’s push in hopes of growing minority-owned business.
As Mrs. Profeldt highlights, the African American business sector is growing by leaps and bounds. In fact, it is the fastest growing group within the United States. Now, one fifth of African Americans are starting and running new businesses, which is up 15.5 percent from 2016 (as reported by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which is the largest study of entrepreneurship in the entire world).
However, Memphis isn’t just attempting to grow African American businesses. It has hopes of assisting other minorities, including Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans. The same Global Entrepreneurship Monitor study has indicated that 12 percent of Hispanic Americans are running new businesses and 17 percent of Asian Americans are running new businesses and startups.
64 percent of Memphis residents are black, according to the Forbes article. Of this 64 percent, there are 40,000 black-owned firms, with around 800 of these businesses employing more than just the owner. Additionally, there are another 1,000 Hispanic owned firms with 155 of these businesses employing more than just the owner.
In order to help promote these new businesses, Mayor Strickland is working on assisting 800 identified minority-owned businesses with employees. It is the goal of the mayor and the city government to help these 800 businesses grow revenue by at least $50 million in the next five years. This is being done through The 800 Initiative.
While we all will need to wait for the next five years to see the overall success of the program, it is reassuring the city is remaining proactive and doing what it can to lead the way in minority-owned businesses.
The business publication recently stated in an article the Memphis could lead the way in minority owned businesses. Under the leadership of Mayor Jim Strickland, The 800 Initiative, launched in May 2018, has set a goal of growing the revenue of 800 minority-owned businesses with paid employees that the city has identified by $50 million by 2023.
With Memphis already thriving with black entrepreneurs and female entrepreneurs, it’s no wonder why national publications like Forbes are taking notice!

]]>The post 4th Annual Memphis Black Restaurant Week! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>This year’s Black Restaurant Week is scheduled for the week of March 3–9, 2019. Last year’s event included 11 black-owned restaurants that served 22 meals as either a two-course lunch or three-course dinner during the seven-day celebration of food. The event also helps lift the socio-economic status of the participating restaurants to bring much-needed notoriety and increase revenues.
Cynthia Daniels, who is the Chief Event Strategist for Memphis-based Cynthia Daniels and Company, created the event in 2016. She saw it as an opportunity to shine a light on the black-owned restaurants in the city. She also saw it as an opportunity to empower black-owned restaurants, attract new customers and help strengthen all of Memphis’s communities. Her desire to make sure that black-owned restaurants be included in the culinary options offered to residents and visitors gave birth to the first Black Restaurant Week event in 2016 and has continued to drive it into its fourth year.
Her company, Cynthia Daniels and Company, is an events planning and design company, which serves businesses in and around the Mid-South region. From 2017 onward, she has been involved in organizing various events, galas and other affairs. These events are specifically designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs in Memphis, providing a needed service to bring together and connect individuals for the betterment of the community as a whole.
If you don’t plan to attend any of the seven days of this culinary event, may we interest you in the above Peach Cobbler Nachos, scheduled to be served up by Chef Tam’s Underground Café. Located at 2299 Young Avenue in Memphis, this restaurant does Southern cooking!
Offerings from Chef Tam includes mac and cheese, dirty rice, yams, catfish and cheesy grits. These menu items alone should get the mouth watering for some down-home Southern comfort food. Memphis-born and raised Chef Fran Mosely will also be featured along with her specially designed desserts. She is the CEO and chef of HM Dessert Lounge, a dessert bar, and a personal chef.
The event offers a variety of two-course lunch for a fixed price of $15 a plate and a three-course dinner priced at $25. More information about the complete offerings, including restaurants and locations, will be forthcoming as the event approaches. Make plans to be in or near Memphis the week of March 3–9, 2019. You will be rewarded with some of the best food from those black-owned restaurateurs looking to establish themselves as part of Memphis’s growing dining scene!

]]>Where in town do you feel happiest? Is it taking in the beautiful outdoor art? Perhaps it’s pulling up a stool at one of the many new local breweries. Or maybe you simply enjoy the calm of walking your dog during the evening twilight.
Whatever makes you happiest and brings out your natural satisfaction is where you should begin. Sometimes, focusing on your job forces you to see only the trees and not the full forest of a possible business idea. Going where you’re satisfied and comfortable tears down the barriers you likely experience throughout the day, which makes it that much easier to spark your next business idea.
Or, you can go lift some weights, head out to the gym, or bike your neighborhood, basically, just get your body moving. This is one of our favorite ways to spark creativity, because when you elevate your heart rate, you also pump more oxygen and nutrients to your brain. All of this is great for idea-generating.
It doesn’t matter if you’re someone who prefers to work out inside or if you like the sun on your neck while jogging through one of the many Memphis public parks, exercise can work as a personal idea generator.
What makes Memphis so great? There is more than one answer here, but for many of us, it’s that there’s always something new to try out. Whether it’s a locally owned restaurant opening up shop, a new art exhibit or just a new club to discover, there’s always something new to try.
New experiences force your brain to think differently. You may have never found yourself to be much of a dancer, but a local dance class can get you out of your comfort zone, see the world differently, and help spur on new kinds of thinking.
When you find yourself struggling with generating a new business idea, it’s likely because you’re thinking like you always do. Trying something new changes it, which means you may be able to find that new idea as well.
We love the city of Memphis. There’s always something fun and exciting going on. It’s also a great destination for business. With these three tips, you’ll discover brand-new ways for generating ideas for either your own business or a brand-new one.

Here are some places for sparking your imagination by observing and listening.
Memphis is home to a number of notable art museums, including:
Winter is a good time to heighten awareness of landscaping shapes, colors and textures (think bark, bare branches and berries) that we often don’t appreciate when blooms are abundant. Enjoy a winter stroll at Memphis Botanic Garden, 750 Cherry Road, and check its website for outdoor art exhibits (Origami in the Garden2 through March) and special events like the Jan. 25 Incognito! Art Auction fundraiser.
Take a virtual walk online or an actual one downtown in search of the city’s famous murals, from “The Sound of Memphis” to “I Am a Man.” The downtown Memphis website provides details.
In the spring, Memphis College of Art, 1930 Poplar Ave., will host a series of talks about subjects including entrepreneurial blogging, fashion design, and maximizing social following on websites like Instagram.
What can be more creative than birth? The Memphis Zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place, invites you to visit three new babies — Winnie the hippo, Rowan the orangutan and Lua the Linne’s two-toed sloth.
Memphis is home to a number of organizations that encourage you to be creative in a hands-on way. Here goes.
Creative Works, 516 Tennessee St., is an organization that provides a wide variety of networking and learning events as well as a marketplace for creatives. It’s a good place to connect with creative types including animators, entrepreneurs, graphic artists, marketers and screenwriters. Events range from free pub network gatherings to 16-hour skill camps (about $1,000) and an annual creativity conference.
Crosstown Arts, 1350 Concourse Ave., is another organization that promotes creativity with exhibits, presentations and workshops by many kinds of artists, including writers and musicians. It offers residencies as well as community art making areas.
ArtUp, 138 St. Paul St., is a business hub for entrepreneurial creatives including artists, chefs and designers. It offers lofts and mentoring for about 20 residents in its incubator program as well as support for creatives who don’t live there.
Creativity and mentoring aid the success of all startups. The “Memphis Business Journal” provides a detailed list of local business incubators, including Emerge Memphis, which offers tenant space and technical assistance programs.
Mid-South Makers, 2804 Bartlett Road, is an organization that provides makerspace (aka “hackerspace”) for people who love to tinker and invent. It’s a good place to meet other makers, share ideas and collaborate on projects.
Check out Crosstown Arts Shared Art Making for access to shared art-making facilities and equipment in digital arts, music, woodworking, printmaking, and photography. This space is open to all types of artists – from professionals to hobbyists!
Love to sing? Perk up your pipes and maybe your picking skills at the Memphis Songwriters open mic nights. They’re held Monday through Thursday nights and Saturdays at coffee houses, restaurants and taverns throughout town.
If you enjoy performing classical works, the Memphis Symphony, 610 Goodman St., holds choir auditions twice a year. If you have some training, give it a go.
Never stop looking for opportunities to experience and practice the arts and innovation. Memphis is a great place to grow creatively.
#WeAreMemphis and we heart our city’s art.

]]>And don’t ignore the fact that Memphis stays fresh by being a hub of musical experimentation, producing hybrids such as surf rock with a Memphis twang.
Plus, the Memphis music producer Sam Phillips recorded what is often cited as the first rock ’n’ roll song, “Rocket 88,” at his Sun Records studio when it opened in 1952. Ike Turner wrote the song about a powerful auto, and his band member Jackie Brenston sang it.
Memphis serves up a banquet of musical history and styles. It’s a major part of our tourism appeal as demonstrated at the Memphis Travel website, which tops its “what to do” page with the following iconic music hot spots:
Memphis Magazine contributor Chris Davis identifies 1982 as the year that forward-thinking entrepreneurs began shaping our city’s music history as a tourist attraction. In a December 2015 article, Davis noted the tourism renaissance as beginning “when Graceland first opened its doors to the public.”
According to Davis’ article, Beale Street had lots of boarded-up buildings the year Graceland opened. Sun Records (eventually renamed Sun Studio), where stars like Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison recorded, was just a quick flash outside the window on Gray Line Tours in the early 1980s, according to Davis’ article.
STAX Museum of American Soul Music is housed in the old STAX Records studio where stars like Booker T. and the M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding (backed by the Bar-Kays), Sam and Dave, and the Staple Singers all recorded.
Nowadays, the city’s musical landmarks hum with visitors. Ted Evanoff of the Commercial Appeal notes that the neon 1950s appeal of Beale Street was Tennessee’s top tourist stop as of 2016 when it attracted six million visitors.

Vintage901 is a Memphis non-profit that brings Memphians together through excellent tasting wine, fantastic food, and community.

]]>With companies like St. Jude Medical, FedEx and ServiceMaster leading the way, entrepreneurs are encouraged to try new things and explore the options that are open to them. In addition to the large number of major corporations that have made Memphis their home, female entrepreneurs can follow any number of career paths, including music, fashion, food and any number of other creative pursuits.
An abundance of resources
The Creative Works annual conference and Epicenter are just two of the resources that can be used to not only connect with investors, but with other entrepreneurs as well. Female entrepreneurs can also learn a number of business-oriented skills that will allow them to pursue their dreams of creating their own career.
It’s not just a man’s world anymore!
In Memphis, the focus on minority- and women-based businesses has helped to create an environment in which women are encouraged to move forward with their own business goals. Whether they are part of the artisan or creative community or wanting to make a name for themselves in the corporate world, women are beginning to take advantage of these new opportunities and are making names for themselves in bold letters.
Memphis has been a city of opportunity for many years. In the recent past, female entrepreneurship has grown by leaps and bounds. With the financial opportunities that are now available to women, they now have the resources to pursue their dreams and make them come true. Women who have the initiative and the drive can enter almost any career field they choose and become a success. All they have to do is make up their mind to succeed and follow their passion!

]]>Here are some unconventional places to go in Memphis when you come to visit.
The Ducks of the Peabody Hotel
One of the most unusual things to do in Memphis is to visit the Peabody Hotel to watch the ducks. Ducks at a hotel? Yes, a tradition since 1933, when the first team of ducks, Peabody, Gayoso and Chisca, graced the lobby of the formerly named Memphis Hotel Company. The ducks, one male and four females or hens of the North American mallard type, maintain residency on top of the hotel’s roof in a specially built duck palace. Every day, at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., the ducks make their walk from the roof to the lobby where they can be seen by guests and visitors alike. Fun fact: Although the hotel features a French restaurant, there is absolutely no duck on any Peabody Hotel menu!
See a Pyramid Without Going to Egypt
On your tour of the unconventional things to do in Memphis is a visit to an Egyptian pyramid. You may not be aware but the city of Memphis, TN takes its name from the ancient capital city of Memphis in ancient Egypt. The city was located at the mouth of the Nile river, which seems about right given the present-day city’s location on the Mississippi River. One thing that both cities have in common are pyramids. The Memphis Pyramid, which sits at the mouth of the Mississippi, is home to one of the largest Bass Pro Shops in the U.S. and was known in the past for hosting college and professional sports.

Drinking with the Goats on Beale Street
If you think hanging out with a bunch of pampered ducks is unusual, how about a group of beer-drinking goats in downtown? No, this is not a typo. Silky O’Sullivans, a bar located in downtown Memphis on famous Beale Street, features two female goats. The goats are known to roam the grounds of the bar, in their tower, looking down on bar-goers and occasionally conning a beer or two off an unsuspecting patron. The goats are treated well by Silky himself, who may share a story or two with you on how they came to take up residency at his bar.
Walk on Water at the Mud Island River Park
You can walk across a five-block replica of the lower Mississippi River. The Mud Island River Park is designed to give you the experience of striding, on scale, the entire river area from Cairo, IL to New Orleans, LA. Once you take your journey, learning how the river flows from state to state, you can step into a 1.3 million gallon pool that replicates the Gulf of Mexico. There you can ride paddleboats and enjoy your trip across the mighty Mississippi.
There are many different ways to enjoy Memphis. So, look for these and other fun and unconventional things to do in Memphis!

]]>The post Income & Expense tracker for businesses [Free Doc] appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>The ability to track your business’s income received and expenses paid does not require you to take additional courses in accounting or obtain a CPA designation. It requires you to have access to a tool and other resources made available from partners who want to see you succeed in business here in Memphis.
Most businesses, especially small businesses and entrepreneurs, who, as freelancers, are sole proprietors, need to have a system in place for tracking income derived from their business activities. This also holds true of the expenses specific to your business. If you are an individual and you don’t maintain an accurate accounting of your income & expense, you will have a difficult time properly filing your taxes.
For example, income derived from business activity and paid to yourself or others in your employ as compensation (either as wages and salary) must deduct certain taxes such as FICA, FUTA, and state taxes and unemployment insurance (where applicable). Failure to withhold these amounts as compensation is paid may result in penalties and a significant higher tax burden for you or someone else by the time April 15th comes around. This is why income tracking is important.
Tracking income & expense need not be a laborious task. There is plenty of software on the market that is designed for businesses, especially small businesses, to accomplish this. The complexity of many of these tools, however, leaves many businesspeople, especially truly small businesses, sole proprietors, and freelancers, wanting something simpler to use and understand.
A simple spreadsheet that provides you with a way to enter information about your income & expense, in a log fashion, may be all you need. This tool is simply organized, set on certain predefined percentages such as those for self-employed taxes. You can change these predefinitions manually and make them applicable for your business easily and without having to do a lot.
You do not have to have a CPA to become good at income and expense tracking for businesses. All you need is a tool and a desire to keep these all-important records. Starting out with a simple spreadsheet for tracking income & expense helps you become more disciplined in your business and better positioned to identify trends, seek additional opportunities for growth, and, more importantly, give you a good reference for when you do sit down and file with the IRS.

]]>The post Memphis Botanic Hosts Origami in the Garden Exhibit appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>The 20 figures on display throughout MBG’s many gardens look like delicate, paper models of animals and elements from nature, such as stars. Yet they are made of aluminum, bronze, and steel. These sturdy sculptures include cranes taking flight, life-size horses galloping across greenery, and a raptor eyeing a mouse frozen on a rock.
Paper folding originated in China around 105 A.D. and was developed into the intricate art of origami by Japanese monks during the sixth century. Around 2000, artist Kevin Box of Santa Fe, New Mexico, began exploring origami as a way to design sculptural models.
Box adapted lost wax casting — an even older craft — to convert folded and crushed paper creations into metal sculptures. In a 2016 video for PBS, he explained that the process traditionally begins with a clay sculpture. However, Box said, he begins with a paper model and “engineers the paper with wax to work within the casting process” creating a mold for liquid metal.
Origami in the Garden2 includes solo works by Box. The superscript “2” in the title means “Box squared” and indicates collaboration with his artist wife, Jennifer Box, on many aspects of the project.
The works also include pieces involving Box’s collaboration with the late Tim Armijo — a Santa Fe artist who worked in many disciplines — as well as renowned origami artists Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse, and Robert J. Lang.
Fu has published numerous books about origami. At her origami website, Johnson shares diagrams and tutorials based on her work. Lang, a physicist fascinated by the practical as well as artistic possibilities of origami, credits LaFosse’s invention of thin, super-strong paper with making large modeling possible. Both Lang and LaFosse appear in the PBS video with Box.
Memphis Botanic Garden, which prides itself on being an educational resource for all ages, expects about 10,000 school children to visit Origami in the Garden2. Teacher resources are available at the MBG website.
An adult jewelry making class called “Fine Silver Origami” is planned for January 26. For more information, call (901)-636-4128.
The 98-acre facility located at 750 Cherry Road is home to 31 specialty gardens including the new Urban Demonstration Garden, complete with chicken coops. So, if you’re feeling cooped up on a winter day, stretch your wings and your imagination at Memphis Botanic.

The coconut pie, greens and fried green tomatoes are some of the unexpected items you may want to try when visiting. Of course, the fried chicken they are known for should be one of the main things you get.
Restaurant Iris: If you are looking for something on the fancier side, the French cooking here is something you should experience. From surf and turf to sandwiches, every dish is excellent and flavored to perfection. The slow atmosphere of Restaurant Iris is meant to give you a respite during a busy day. So, prepare to slow down and enjoy the fine dining.
Dodici at Bari: It doesn’t get much more local and unique than this tiny, secret restaurant. The private and quiet spot creates customized drinks and is a very eccentric experience. Head through Midtown’s Bari Ristorante and up the steps to experience the unmarked bar. Seating is limited, so you may experience a wait.
Shelby Farms Park: From the drive-thru Christmas light display to the dog park, locals love the Shelby Farms Park, and you will want to stop here too! The paths cross beautiful views, perfect for a jog or walk. A lake provides space for water activities and fun family activities, like horseback riding. An onsite restaurant can make this a great spot for a day trip.
Orpheum: This historic theater is one of our favorites and a place you should visit when you are in Memphis. The stage is beautiful and the sound in this building is excellent. From the orchestra to live theatre, there is a wide variety of shows you can choose from to fit your interests. Watch the Orpheum site to purchase tickets from season ticket holders at a discount!
National Civil Rights Museum: The museum is a reminder of what we’ve gone through as a nation. There is a lot of information here and exhibits covering the mid-twentieth century in America. The moving exhibit is something visitors should take the opportunity to experience, no matter their age or background.
Graceland: Elvis’ home is a glamorous part of the Memphis history that every visitor should experience. The huge entertainment complex is filled with museums, stores, food, presentations and more. Try the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich in the main café and enjoy all the fantastic décor in dramatically decorated rooms. An iPad with headphones will provide you with commentary throughout the guided tour so you can get to know all the sites at Graceland.

]]>Good Memphis style ribs always start with smoked pork, either pulled or on the slab. If you want the meat to be tender and full of taste, let it smoke for several hours to bring out all of the flavors in the meat. It’s important to use the best cuts and the highest quality of meat possible. Good quality meat will ensure the taste is true to authentic Memphis style, even without the herbs and spices.
Dry rubs are just as popular as the different kinds of wet sauces that are used throughout Memphis. Dry rubs normally contain garlic, paprika, pepper, cumin and onions, as well as other herbs and spices. Memphis style barbecue sauce is made from ripe tomatoes, a variety of spices and just the right amount of vinegar to produce a thin sauce that’s tart and tangy with a hint of sweetness. It’s thin enough to drizzle over ribs coated with a dry rub or to sit beside a plate of pulled pork for use as a dipping sauce.
If you don’t have the time to cook, visit one of the many local bars or restaurants that offer Memphis style ribs. There’s quite the variety to choose from, and each of these dining spots offers ribs with a unique taste and flair. There are so many options, you could literally visit one or two a week and it would still take you over a year to sample them all.
If you’re in the mood for a good Memphis style barbecue recipe for your ribs, then ask around. Everyone either knows of a place that serves good ribs or has a recipe that you “just have to try!” Find a recipe that you like and do a little experimenting to make it your own. Who knows? You may end up creating the next best thing when it comes to good old Memphis style ribs!

The River Walk: This five-block-long replication of the Mississippi River is a scaled model you can explore in less than a day. The sculpted area holds over 1.3 million gallons of water, and you can enjoy activities like pedal boat rides or a tour at the museum. Plus, the views here are gorgeous.
Stax Museum: You’ve probably already thought to check out Graceland and Sun Studio, but don’t forget about the museum for American soul music! It contains a rare and impressive collection of over 2,000 artifacts to preserve films, galleries, music, artistry and more. The most impressive item on display might be Isaac Hayes’ custom Cadillac Eldorado, which has a mini-bar, TV and 24-carat gold trim and is lined with white fur carpet.
The Metal Museum: Not the music genre, the art form! This hidden gem in Memphis shows off some very impressive sculpture and exhibits. Look at items created out of metal, everything from knives to jewelry. While you are checking out all of the man-made artifacts, be sure to scope the surrounding views of the bluff where the museum is housed.
Voodoo Café: Find out where this food truck is going to be and make sure you catch it! The truck took first place in the Memphis food truck competition for 2018 and will not disappoint. Many of the locals rave about the coffee (café con leche) and beignets. There are lots of different flavors to try, including Sweet Juju and the Dead Elvis (peanut butter, bananas and bacon).
Beale Street: This eclectic drive is filled with shops, art, cafes, restaurants, bars and so much more. You can spend hours here just exploring the different businesses along the street. Make sure you check out A. Schwab’s — Beale Street’s only remaining original business. It is part museum and part general store and offers locally sourced Memphis merch.

]]>The Harahan, Big River Crossing and Hernando de Soto bridges, which span over the river, can be seen in a different way, literally, every night. The bridges are illuminated nightly to provide a visual feast for the eyes. If you have never seen this sight, now is the time to consider a stop in Memphis to enjoy what others in the city have known for some time.
About Bridge Lighting
Travel across the mighty river was made easier with the construction of the Harahan bridge. Opened in 1916, it is the oldest of the three spans that takes traffic to points north, south, east and west to and from Memphis. It was the main thoroughfare for the city until construction of the Memphis-Arkansas bridge and Interstate 55 was completed in 1949.
The span, which was rebuilt in 1928 after fire destroyed the original structure, has been a landmark for many decades. The De Soto Bridge was introduced in 1973 and set to lights in 1986, while Big River Crossing, unveiled in 2016, has attracted more than 300,000 visitors for its nightly lights.
What the Nightly Light Show Offers
The nightly light shows on these bridges give you a compelling reason to spend time at the city’s Riverfront. The bridge lighting has inspired residents and visitors to come out and explore all that the city has to offer through a wonderful display of these architectural marvels. The shows themselves are put on and managed by a privately funded nonprofit, Memphis Bridge Lighting, Inc., which was formed about the time Big River Crossing bridge was unveiled to the public in 2016.
Plan to Take in the Lights
Plan on spending some time in Memphis doing the things that everyone does in this great city. Set aside a night or two with the family or special someone in your life and come sit on the river’s edge. The illumination of the city’s bridges, a tradition that is nearly three decades old, is a great way to unwind, explore Memphis at night, and see the city in a way you may not have thought of doing. A nightly light show on the Mississippi River is a sight to see and a sight you should see!

]]>A space for space
Victoria Jones, Executive Director of The CLTV explains that when searching for a permanent location for the organization, it was important to choose a space that represented the black culture and the future of black art in Memphis. After viewing locations in other sects of the city such as Crosstown Concourse and Midtown, the team realized that the potential creative energy of the already thriving Orange Mound would allow The CLTV to provide a platform for the black community in its entirety. Positioned in South Memphis, Orange Mound is historically known for being the first community established for and by African Americans in the South, as well as being an essential region for the establishment and prosperity of black-owned businesses and culture. The neighborhood was designated a Preserve America Community in 2016 by First Lady Michelle Obama who described Orange Mound as a “treasured place in the American story.” The Preserve America Community award is an honor which recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. Today, the area features some of the highest civic pride and engagement in the city as new developments such as the Orange Mound Senior Center become established. The CLTV’s new space features a large open gallery in the front of the building with walls that already mount local black photography and art projects. In the back of the building, artists and students have access to a large workshop stocked with art supplies and an ample amount of space for freedom of creative expression. Currently, the organization consists of fourteen staff members who work entirely on a volunteer status for students and local artists in the community. The CLTV is continuing to prepare the new space for its grand public opening on January 11th, 2019.
Art gives people hope
The CLTV focuses on caring for themselves and each other differently. By giving black artists the tools to ethically engage in communities, the organization fights to shift cultural inequality through elevating a consistent spotlight on art within the black community. Jones states that the significance and importance of black culture are rooted throughout Memphis history and The CLTV team seeks to make that known by showcasing and cultivating black art.
“The wider our platform becomes, the more black artists become involved and the louder their voices get.”
– Victoria Jones, Executive Director of The CLTV
Looking forward into 2019, The CLTV hopes to plant a strong stake in the ground with its new permanent space and residency programming. After the grand opening, there will be about twelve large shows every year and smaller-scaled shows every 3 weeks, along with performing arts and concert series all year long. Community members, as well as those looking to become involved, can donate money or feasible and age-appropriate art supplies to The CLTV, sign up for newsletters and volunteer events, and of course, continue to bring their soul to Memphis.

Offering various rooms with different levels of difficulty (from beginner to 5-lock), there is truly something here for everyone. Billed as “the ultimate escape room in Memphis,” I Escaped Memphis! lives up to the hype. “Branson Manor” and “Rest Easy Hotel” are two fan favorites. (To be sure, you’ll do anything but rest easy.) This escape room is open every day, but closed for corporate events. Call ahead.
Location: 5707 Quince Rd., Memphis, TN 38119

You and your fellow captives wake up handcuffed and blindfolded in a strange room. You’ve been kidnapped, and you need to act fast. What do you do next? Not your average outing, Breakout Games Memphis offers different rooms with unique storylines and 60 minutes to crack the code. Bottom line: Expect a constant rush of adrenaline with this one. Open every day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Location: 2965 N Germantown Rd., Suite 117, Memphis, TN 38133
Phone: 901-612-2740
From a theater to a ship dungeon to a rabbit hole, this escape room offers it all. And, as an added bonus, Bluff City offers an EscapeLite program for children ages 3 to 6, so your kids can have their own scavenger hunt while you and your fellow escape artists do your thing. Since its opening times vary, it’s a good idea to call ahead.

]]>Single-handedly responsible for converting BBQ sauce lovers into ardent fans of dry rubs, you aren’t going to want to skip this place when you come to Memphis. The portions are generous, and the prices are great. Try the ribs and brisket combo, and then buy some of their famous seasonings to take home! Their hours vary during the week, so call ahead or check their website for details.

The building is nothing fancy, but the food?—ask around, and the locals will tell you it’s the place to eat. The menu includes options, such as fried green tomatoes, okra, baked beans and (of course) some of the best chicken you’ll ever eat. Open every day at 11:00 a.m., the food is on the low end of price and the high end of taste.

No bones about it, Central BBQ leads the pack when it comes to authentic barbeque in Memphis. Think: “rough around the edges” Look for their famous BBQ nachos and don’t you dare leave without trying the ribs. Offering generous portions on wooden tables with paper towels instead of napkins, Central serves BBQ the way it was meant to be eaten.
Location: 2249 Central Ave., Memphis, TN 38104
Phone: (901) 272-9377
A Memphis trademark, Gibson’s Donuts, has been known to turn people into donut fans. Try the famous maple bacon or the pineapple coconut fritter. (Hint: They’ve been known to give first-timers a donut straight from the fryer. It certainly doesn’t hurt to ask!) And the best news?—they’re open 24/7! The place is always clean and the staff is always friendly. Go see for yourself!
Location: 760 Mount Moriah Rd, Memphis, TN 38117
Phone: (901) 682-8200
It should be illegal to visit Memphis without doing something to honor the King of Rock and Roll. Why not enjoy his favorite snack? The grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich is made the way he liked it in Gladys’ Diner at Graceland. Tour the home of Elvis or just pop in for a snack. Either way, the grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich has been known to live up to its hype.
Location: 3734 Elvis Presley Blvd, Memphis, TN 38116
Phone: (901) 332-3322
So whether you come to Memphis to work or play, be sure to visit the top five places to eat in Memphis. Another idea: Enjoy age-old Memphis restaurants in historically significant places. Here’s another list to get you started.
