]]>Your LinkedIn photo needs to be different from what you might use on Facebook or Instagram. It needs to be professional. Avoid the blurry images you have of yourself, or anything that has you out with friends. It needs to be of just you, wearing a professional outfit. Even if you need someone to help you take a professional headshot, do so. The only time you should even consider moving away from this is if you work in a specialty career path. For example, if you’re a chef, have a picture of you in the kitchen (but always make sure it’s still a profile picture of your face). Or, if you’re a videographer, you can be holding a camera. If it’s brand- and career-related, it’s OK to have it included. But other than this, always go professional.
Your resume will include all the bullet points of your working history. The headline is what helps turn heads, so get creative with this. When looking for Memphis jobs, you want someone to see a bit of your personality. You’re not just a mindless drone floating around. So, showcase yourself and your personality in the headline. Here are some creative examples if you need inspiration.
LinkedIn is not the place to upload spammy content to try to sell something. It’s not a place to post YouTube videos of your vacation to the Bahamas. However, it is the perfect spot for you to craft a blog geared toward your profession. If you’re a marketer, keep a blog about marketing, using social media to expand a brand, SEO, mobile marketing and so on. You can also upload from your blog if it’s located on another website. This keeps your profile fresh, relevant and in front of employers.
LinkedIn might be for professionals, but it is still a social media platform. When looking at getting a job in Memphis, join a related group that connects you to other Memphis professionals. Maybe you connect with other kitchen operators or hotel managers. Whatever group you join, make sure to post, stay active and participate. There’s no point in joining a group if others don’t know you exist.
These are just a few ways to set yourself apart from other job seekers in the greater Memphis area. Just remember, as is the case with your paper resume, keep it up to date and comb through it for any errors. A clean, easy-to-read and concise resume will let potential employers know everything they need to know about you, which helps boost your chance at landing that all-important interview.

Because, let’s face it; do you really want to open a business you have zero passion for? Sure, a vegan pizza joint might do well, but if you’re not vegan and you hate pizza, will you really be happy? Yes, the purpose of running a business is to make money, but ultimately, you want to be happy, so consider what you enjoy doing. That might be the best way to identify what business will work for you.
Even if you haven’t run your own business before, you already know the importance of “location, location, location.” You need to know the location. If you want to open a hair salon, is there a need for it in a specific area? And what client base lives in the area? There’s probably a need for what you like to do, but you need to know where it will work within the city.
What kinds of skills do you have? Area you a “people person”? Perhaps you should work in retail. Would you rather avoid interacting directly with people? Perhaps an e-commerce business will work better for you. Know your strengths, and, just as importantly, know your weaknesses.
The hardest part of any business is starting it up. The vast majority of business ideas will remain just that: ideas. There are a million reasons that can prevent someone from opening up a new enterprise. There’s the fear of the unknown, the potential for failure, not having business management experience and so on. To truly succeed, though, you need to just start. Lay the foundation for your company. The first step is the most difficult. Thankfully, when starting a business in Memphis, assistance is all around. From the Greater Memphis Chamber to non-profit organizations looking to offer advice and knowledge, you’re in the right place to start your own company. It’s up to you to get the ball rolling.

]]>The post 4 Reasons to Start a Business in Your 30s appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>By the time you’ve hit your 30s, you’ve been working for some time. In fact, you’ve probably been in your current career path for at least a decade, if not longer. The skills you’ve developed over this time will help you when opening a new business.
But what happens if your future business has nothing to do with what you’re doing right now? There’s nothing wrong with that at all. You might work in accounting now but want to move to running a restaurant. The accounting knowledge you have will help. You’ve also learned how to follow a set schedule and communicate professionally with others. All of this is will help you with your new business.
You’ve been in your line of work for several years now. And, chances are, you’ve seen the future. You can see what your life will be like five or ten years down the road. Does it really look like something you want to do? If you stay with the job, you might find it difficult, if not impossible, to walk away. In a way, you’ll become stuck. In your 30s, you’re anything but stuck. So take advantage of it.
Networking is important for any business. You’ve had to hustle and create everything yourself up to this point. From finding work to talking with other employees who also started at the ground up. You’ve developed a strong network. You can use this networking to build your new business. You can also pull from this skill as you grow your idea for the new company.
It’s important to be completely honest with yourself. There’s always a chance a business will fail. There’s no shortage of reasons: It wasn’t prepared properly, it didn’t have a good location, marketing was bad, or it was ahead of its time. If you wait to start a business, you might have one shot at your business. But in your 30s, you can fail, learn from it, and come back better than ever.

]]>So you have an idea. Great. Now you just need to decide who will buy your product or service. If you’re setting up shop in Memphis, you’ll want to know the demographics you want to target and where these people are living in the city. This will help with your advertising. It will also help you determine who may or may not be interested in buying your product or visiting your restaurant.
Remember, the more research you perform early on, the easier it will be to market and reach an audience. There’s no such thing as too much data here. So really dig deep into demographics, competition and locating potential customers.
What is the goal of your business plan? What do you want to accomplish? You need to decide this, and then put it in writing. That way, everyone in the company knows what the business plan is.
This doesn’t need to be the third step in your business plan. In fact, you should start saving money as soon as you have the idea. Then, when it looks like you’re going to follow through with creating a business, look for ways to raise money. You can use Kickstarter and online money-raising methods, or you can borrow money from a bank. Ideally, avoid asking friends and family for money if you can because money between friends can ultimately cause friendships to collapse if things go south.
Yes, one particular location may be more expensive than others. However, you need to be where your customers are. A favorable location may cost more, but it could mean that your business will grow faster.
Register your business with the city, the state and the federal government. Trademark your name if you have to, and begin creating social media profiles before others can take the name from you.
These are a few of the important steps you need to follow when starting a business in Memphis. It is hard work to run your own company, and it will take long hours and plenty of determination. However, you can do it. You have the willpower and the great idea. Plus, with a city like Memphis as your backdrop, you have access to a top-tier talent pool. By following these steps for starting a business in Memphis, you’ll be on the right track to achieving your dreams.

]]>The post Tips to Market Your Memphis Business on Social Media appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>This is where most businesses in Memphis get themselves into trouble. They create social media profiles and try to go after everyone. But going after everyone won’t appease anyone. While it would be nice to attract everyone to your business, you need to first understand your target audience. This way, you can create content on your social media channels that will better connect with your target audience.
Segment marketing is a good thing to practice on your social media account. This is because while you need to know your target audience, there is a chance you might have several targets. For example, your key audience might be composed of college students and older professionals. As each target audience will connect with different marketing materials, you don’t want to create the same materials for everyone. By segmenting your social media content, you will better connect with the varying target audience.
Not all social media platforms are created equal. Knowing your target audience will help you decide which platform is right for you. You will need to have a Facebook profile regardless as this is the largest social media outlet used by the largest number of individuals. Many will turn to Facebook over websites when searching for store information.
Beyond Facebook, though, younger demographics are more likely to use Snapchat and Instagram, while you may want to maintain a blog on professional sites like LinkedIn (you should run a blog anyway as it will help boost your website SEO).
If you’re not taking advantage of live video now, you should be. Why? It instantly puts you in front of all your followers. On Instagram, when you go live, your video feed will be highlighted and put in front of all other storylines. This is true as well when running a video feed on Facebook. YouTube will send out notifications to your followers that you are going live as well.
Basically, live video works as a way to constantly promote your content and put it ahead of all other accounts your subscribers follow.
Part of having social media accounts is remaining active. You can’t just post once ever few weeks. You need to post at least once a day. You also need to reply to those who post on your content in order to properly market your buiness in Memphis.

]]>One reason why you might select Memphis over other destinations isn’t just because of its centralized location or less expensive properties than New York or Los Angeles. It’s because of the tax incentives. You want a location that will help you save money while boosting productivity and profits. There are a number of tax incentives available to you when you move your business to Memphis.
Through the Greater Memphis Chamber, you can search through the different incentives available to your business. This includes tax incentives, infrastructure and utility incentives, training and workforce incentives, plus financing incentives. So prior to any move, make sure to check out the Greater Memphis Chamber website for all financial opportunities available to you.
Beyond the incentives open to all businesses moving into Memphis, there are added perks of owning a small business or being a minority running a business. The Tennessee Business Enterprise Resource Office (BERO) offers a number of business plan development services, which can include everything from B2B networking to assist with procurement. Before opening up shop, you should look into these services to find out if, or how, BERO can help you save money and get your business up and running faster.
If you’re moving equipment and goods from another city, you will need to book a moving company that is well respected and accredited. This way you know you’re working with a quality service provider who will get your company to Memphis in one piece. While the exact moving provider will vary depending on where you’re located, you need to consider BBB accredited companies and then go with the moving company that best fits your commercial and business needs. You can visit the BBB.org website for more information on accredited moving companies that can transit all of your business material from your current destination to Memphis. After all, you have all kinds of work to put in prior to the move. Having a professional take care of the moving services for you can make things that much easier (and give you one less thing to stress over).

A concept shop is a destination where small artisans and business owners are able to showcase their goods. One of the main hang-ups for small business owners is the ability to get their products in front of customers. E-commerce is one way, but it is a crowded market. It’s often easier to push a locally crafted product to locals, but investing in the necessary real estate is also expensive.
With the help of City & State, small artisans in the area were able to highlight and showcase their products to people who came into their stores as well as to those who walked past.
As Toro saw the growth of City & State and the entire Broad Avenue Arts District, she wanted to expand her outreach to local business owners. However, she noticed that despite the growing professional community, women and minorities were not highly represented. To help, she decided to assist these business owners in landing real estate.
She went back and talked with her own professional network and went on to create the Broad Angels Network. Toro and her partners wanted to assist female and minority Memphis entrepreneurs who were struggling to move into a brick-and-mortar location.
Oftentimes, finding the right real estate at an affordable price point is especially difficult. With her Memphis Entrepreneurship programs, Toro has helped local professionals connect with banks and receive the necessary funding required to open up a business in the first place.
While Toro is assisting up-and-coming professionals with opening their dream businesses and getting them off the ground, she’s also helping through education.
Toro found that one of the biggest issues individuals face when it comes to opening a business isn’t necessarily the lack of access to loans, but it is the lack of understanding of how to secure these loans and other forms of financial assistance. There are loans, offered through the city of Memphis and the state of Tennessee, as well as federal loans, all of which are specifically designed for female and minority entrepreneurs. However, many business owners are not aware that these loans are available.
To help, Toro has worked with business owners to educate them about the documentation and financial information that is required to open such a business. It is her goal to clear up confusion about the loan process and how entrepreneurs can access such loans from local lenders.

]]>You will find all of that and so much more in the city of Memphis.
If you were to look at the small business website of nearly every city, most of these sites will all say the same thing. You’d almost swear some websites just copied and pasted the same content from one city to the next. So with so many cities shoving each other out of the way, attempting to attract you, you need to sift through the advertising fog and uncover what really is important for your business to thrive.
First, you need access to employees who are capable of assisting with you and your development. And while you need access to a large workforce, you may not want to be bogged down with significant competition right out of the gate. After all, a small plant will not always survive when growing in the shadows of a larger tree. It needs its own ability to stretch its roots. That is what you receive in Memphis.
If you were to call Memphis home, you’d have access to big-city level workers, both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality. And yet you have the competition of a smaller town. Chances are, there is more than enough room for you to establish yourself and grow your company.
The first few years of a business will make or break it. If you can make it past the give year mark, chances are you’ll be around for the long haul. Usually, the problem is finances. It’s expensive to start a new company, advertise it, network, and connect with the right people.
The city helps support all startup businesses in Memphis. Memphis Entrepreneurs have access to all kinds of loans and grants. The 800 Initiative, which went into effect last year, is designed to help promote minority business owners. However, the city isn’t only assisting minorities and female business owners. The city is open arms to all companies big and small. So, if you have an idea, Memphis wants to help you connect with your audience and grow.
If you work in e-commerce and sell products online, Memphis is in a prime distribution location. Whether you’re shipping to Atlanta or Detroit, you can get your products out faster, which means happier customers and, in return, more return clients.
The landing site for your business is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when running a business. Let Memphis be that best decision you ever make for your company.

]]>The post Forbes says Memphis could lead the way in minority owned businesses! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>According to Forbes, we’re spearheading the movement.
Whenever Forbes catches wind of business activity it either means something very good or very bad is happening within a specific sector of commerce. For Memphis, it is the former. Forbes’ contributing writer Elaine Pofeldt profiled the city’s push in hopes of growing minority-owned business.
As Mrs. Profeldt highlights, the African American business sector is growing by leaps and bounds. In fact, it is the fastest growing group within the United States. Now, one fifth of African Americans are starting and running new businesses, which is up 15.5 percent from 2016 (as reported by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, which is the largest study of entrepreneurship in the entire world).
However, Memphis isn’t just attempting to grow African American businesses. It has hopes of assisting other minorities, including Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans. The same Global Entrepreneurship Monitor study has indicated that 12 percent of Hispanic Americans are running new businesses and 17 percent of Asian Americans are running new businesses and startups.
64 percent of Memphis residents are black, according to the Forbes article. Of this 64 percent, there are 40,000 black-owned firms, with around 800 of these businesses employing more than just the owner. Additionally, there are another 1,000 Hispanic owned firms with 155 of these businesses employing more than just the owner.
In order to help promote these new businesses, Mayor Strickland is working on assisting 800 identified minority-owned businesses with employees. It is the goal of the mayor and the city government to help these 800 businesses grow revenue by at least $50 million in the next five years. This is being done through The 800 Initiative.
While we all will need to wait for the next five years to see the overall success of the program, it is reassuring the city is remaining proactive and doing what it can to lead the way in minority-owned businesses.
The business publication recently stated in an article the Memphis could lead the way in minority owned businesses. Under the leadership of Mayor Jim Strickland, The 800 Initiative, launched in May 2018, has set a goal of growing the revenue of 800 minority-owned businesses with paid employees that the city has identified by $50 million by 2023.
With Memphis already thriving with black entrepreneurs and female entrepreneurs, it’s no wonder why national publications like Forbes are taking notice!

]]>Where in town do you feel happiest? Is it taking in the beautiful outdoor art? Perhaps it’s pulling up a stool at one of the many new local breweries. Or maybe you simply enjoy the calm of walking your dog during the evening twilight.
Whatever makes you happiest and brings out your natural satisfaction is where you should begin. Sometimes, focusing on your job forces you to see only the trees and not the full forest of a possible business idea. Going where you’re satisfied and comfortable tears down the barriers you likely experience throughout the day, which makes it that much easier to spark your next business idea.
Or, you can go lift some weights, head out to the gym, or bike your neighborhood, basically, just get your body moving. This is one of our favorite ways to spark creativity, because when you elevate your heart rate, you also pump more oxygen and nutrients to your brain. All of this is great for idea-generating.
It doesn’t matter if you’re someone who prefers to work out inside or if you like the sun on your neck while jogging through one of the many Memphis public parks, exercise can work as a personal idea generator.
What makes Memphis so great? There is more than one answer here, but for many of us, it’s that there’s always something new to try out. Whether it’s a locally owned restaurant opening up shop, a new art exhibit or just a new club to discover, there’s always something new to try.
New experiences force your brain to think differently. You may have never found yourself to be much of a dancer, but a local dance class can get you out of your comfort zone, see the world differently, and help spur on new kinds of thinking.
When you find yourself struggling with generating a new business idea, it’s likely because you’re thinking like you always do. Trying something new changes it, which means you may be able to find that new idea as well.
We love the city of Memphis. There’s always something fun and exciting going on. It’s also a great destination for business. With these three tips, you’ll discover brand-new ways for generating ideas for either your own business or a brand-new one.

]]>The post Income & Expense tracker for businesses [Free Doc] appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>The ability to track your business’s income received and expenses paid does not require you to take additional courses in accounting or obtain a CPA designation. It requires you to have access to a tool and other resources made available from partners who want to see you succeed in business here in Memphis.
Most businesses, especially small businesses and entrepreneurs, who, as freelancers, are sole proprietors, need to have a system in place for tracking income derived from their business activities. This also holds true of the expenses specific to your business. If you are an individual and you don’t maintain an accurate accounting of your income & expense, you will have a difficult time properly filing your taxes.
For example, income derived from business activity and paid to yourself or others in your employ as compensation (either as wages and salary) must deduct certain taxes such as FICA, FUTA, and state taxes and unemployment insurance (where applicable). Failure to withhold these amounts as compensation is paid may result in penalties and a significant higher tax burden for you or someone else by the time April 15th comes around. This is why income tracking is important.
Tracking income & expense need not be a laborious task. There is plenty of software on the market that is designed for businesses, especially small businesses, to accomplish this. The complexity of many of these tools, however, leaves many businesspeople, especially truly small businesses, sole proprietors, and freelancers, wanting something simpler to use and understand.
A simple spreadsheet that provides you with a way to enter information about your income & expense, in a log fashion, may be all you need. This tool is simply organized, set on certain predefined percentages such as those for self-employed taxes. You can change these predefinitions manually and make them applicable for your business easily and without having to do a lot.
You do not have to have a CPA to become good at income and expense tracking for businesses. All you need is a tool and a desire to keep these all-important records. Starting out with a simple spreadsheet for tracking income & expense helps you become more disciplined in your business and better positioned to identify trends, seek additional opportunities for growth, and, more importantly, give you a good reference for when you do sit down and file with the IRS.

However, if asked, many of these people don’t have plans for turning their ideas into profitable companies, in which case even the best idea becomes completely worthless. If you have an idea for a small business, it’s essential to actualize it with a business strategy and concrete goals to make it into a reality.
Being sure of yourself and laying concrete plans is essential for getting a business off the ground. However, once you’re up and running, it’s paramount to listen to your customers. Though the phrase “the customer is always right” has been watered down in recent years, it holds true in terms of small business development. Ultimately, customers will only pay for things they want, so if business owners grow out of touch with their customers’ wants, it will swiftly become impossible to make money. Always keep the desires of your consumers at the forefront, and make sure the product you’re offering solves a problem for your customers.
Though this mostly applies to businesses with venture capital, all entrepreneurs should be wary of upscaling too quickly. Although scaling should be an eventual goal for any business, it’s important to remember that expanding costs money. If a startup grows too quickly without the revenue to support the expansion, it will eventually crumple under its own weight. With this in mind, entrepreneurs need to always ensure cost does not exceed revenue, or else they will find themselves swiftly going under.

]]>Held in July of this year, the first Project WET Water Workshop of 2018 was a resounding success. Educators from across Memphis and beyond came together to try out both classroom-based and outdoor activities while educating themselves on the habitats that exist within the Wolf River watershed, local and global water issues, the Wolf River Greenway project and more. If you’re a teacher who missed the July workshop but are eager to take part, there’s good news: Another Project WET Water Workshop is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Pre-registration is required, and the workshop will include a copy of the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide 2.0 for every attendee along with a signed certificate of attendance.
If you’re not a Memphis-area educator but still want to get involved in local conservation efforts, the Wolf River Conservancy still wants to hear from you! Although the workshop is centered on educators, it’s open to anyone interested in attending, so why not pre-register and connect with environmentally minded people like yourself? The Wolf River will thank you, and so will the next generation!

]]>But just like most dreams, it does take capital to get nonprofit businesses off the ground or to strengthen an existing organization. How can a growing organization find new support? And, how can Memphians who care learn about who is doing good work?
GiVE 365 is a dollar-a-day giving circle at the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis where members pool their money to make a positive impact on our community through grants to nonprofits. The GiVE 365 membership is a diverse group of individuals, couples, families, and friends, in their 20s through 70s, from 32 different ZIP codes across the Memphis area.
Members vote on an annual grantmaking theme, and some join grant review teams to help narrow grant applicants to a group of finalists. Those nonprofits then pitch their grant proposals at a fast-paced and fun yearly event, The Finals.
This event not only helps these organizations prepare for the future but is also a fantastic community event that highlights the Memphis nonprofit scene. The membership supports organizations of all sizes and often provides catalytic funding for new nonprofits or programs.
Erin Harris is the director of the Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton. She says, “In 2013, GiVE 365 awarded us our first major grant, for nearly $10,000, which funded most of the cost of operating the outdoor Art Garden for that year. We have expanded in some really special ways over the past few years, and I know the support from GiVE 365 and its members made a huge impact on the growth of the Garden.”
As GiVEr Sonya Fleck says, “GiVE 365 is the interrupter. It lets people try something brand new to see if it will work, and it supports getting grassroots efforts off the ground.”
Find out why people love being GiVERs!
As the title suggests, you can have a positive impact in Memphis for less than the price of a cup of coffee. For $1 a day, you become a GiVEr and make a difference in our community alongside other awesome Memphians. Since its founding in 2010, GiVE 365 members together have granted $495,190 to 59 distinct organizations. This year GiVE 365 awarded $57,000 to eight nonprofits with the theme Reconnecting Memphis: programs that bridge and celebrate our communities.

]]>You won’t find many cities around the nation that boast the startup rates you’ll find here in Memphis, TN. This is likely why Memphis has been included on CNN Money’s list of the top 10 best cities to launch a startup… twice.
In 2014, Memphis was ranked No. 10 by CNN Money. In 2015, it jumped up three spots to No. 7.
This impressive rise shows how quickly the city is becoming a hub for entrepreneurs. Whether you’re thinking about moving here or already live here and are considering starting your own business, let’s take a look at why Memphis entrepreneurship is booming.
A lot of women are opening up businesses in Memphis. in fact, the city witnessed a 116 percent increase in female-owned businesses between 2007 and 2012. One inspiring female business owner is Neely Draughon, who founded Off the Square Catering in 2008. Draughon was an accountant in Nashville when she decided to attend pastry school and start her own company here in Memphis, and the rest is history!
What’s also fueling Memphis business growth is the uptick in black entrepreneurs opening up shop here. In 2018, Memphis was rated the best city for black-owned businesses by Black Enterprise Magazine.
Indeed, minority-owned businesses of all kinds have flourished in Memphis in recent years. Here’s a look at the numbers from between 2007 and 2012:
As with the growth in female entrepreneurship, several factors played a role in the rise of other types of minority-owned businesses in Memphis, including the establishment of programs specifically aimed at women and other minorities.
One of the biggest obstacles associated with starting a business is funding, and this is especially true for women and other minorities. To help, the Memphis-based nonprofit entrepreneurial organization Epicenter teamed up with Pathway Lending, a nonprofit community development financial institution, to launch the Memphis Small Business Opportunity Loan Fund.
Currently, the fund is composed of a whopping $15 million and is backed by three local lenders. Its aim is to fund business owners who may not qualify for conventional bank loans, with loans of between $5,000 and $1 million available to both existing business owners and those looking to launch a startup.
It can be tough figuring out the best place to sow your seeds. At the end of the day, you want to pick somewhere you can live, work and play. You’ll find an array of opportunities for all three here in Memphis, which is why it’s consistently listed as one of the top cities in the U.S.
If you’re committed to becoming a successful entrepreneur, then Memphis is definitely the place to be!

]]>In addition to its tradition of good food, blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis has shaped several multimillion-dollar success stories. For instance, Restore Medical Solutions raised $4.15 million in funding, while the medical device company MRI Inventions has raised a massive $30.53 million in funding since its inception in 1998.
Needless to say, entrepreneurs around the world have taken notice of the success others are finding in Memphis. For example, Preteckt—a Canadian trucking-logistics startup that predicts vehicle breakdowns before they become major issues—relocated to Memphis after partnering with a local venture-development organization called Start Co.
If you’re looking to establish entrepreneurship success, Memphis is a city overflowing with possibilities. More importantly, it’s brimming with a network that can help you take your startup to levels you never thought possible. Here’s a closer look at some of the many reasons Memphis is booming as far as startups are concerned.
Memphis is home to a plethora of thriving startups, and this is helping many aspiring entrepreneurs, incubators and accelerators move in the right direction. Given that the city is already home to several large hospitals and health-research institutions, it made sense for the Memphis Bioworks Foundation to launch ZeroTo510—a startup accelerator centered on bringing more medical device manufacturers to the city—in 2012.
When Leslie Smith, who previously served as president and CEO of TechTown Detroit, evaluated the city of Memphis’ approach to entrepreneurship, she found it to be missing a united strategy that was shared, repeated and recognized by all essential partners. As a result of her analysis, EPIcenter Memphis was launched. One of the biggest players in the city’s startup scene, the organization is working toward a goal of creating 1,000 new entrepreneurs and 500 new companies within the next 10 years.
Did you know Memphis ranks among the top 10 cities with the lowest startup costs? In fact, the cost of rent for office space in San Francisco is nearly triple that of space in Memphis. Affordable office space puts money back into the pockets of entrepreneurs, allowing them to focus on other important aspects of running their businesses, such as product development and marketing. This makes Memphis very attractive to entrepreneurs who are on a tight budget.
From maximizing its existing strengths to facilitating future startup success, Memphis is building a platform that benefits everyone in the city.

]]>The post Starting a business in Memphis? Here’s what you should know about taxes! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>That’s what makes Memphis a viable option for entrepreneurs who are looking to start or grow their companies. Memphis even made it onto Livability.com’s list of five cities with enticing startup incentives, and a national study noted that Tennessee has the fourth highest business incentives in the country.
If you’re looking to relocate a business to Memphis, you too can take advantage of competitive City of Memphis taxes. Let’s take a look at some of the incentives you may qualify for once you open up shop.
If you’re working on a project with a large capital investment, you may qualify for the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) incentive, which will allow you to expand or relocate your business without worrying about taxes during the building phase.
To qualify, you must create at least 15 jobs and invest a minimum of $1 million in development. EDGE is designed for organizations that are fabricating, processing, assembling, manufacturing and distributing biomedical items, food, electronics, alternative fuels, cars and other products. However, auto dealerships, adult entertainment stores, residential houses, liquor and tobacco shops, pawn shops and payday loan businesses are not covered.
If you trade goods with businesses overseas, you may qualify for the Foreign Trade Zone Program, which allows you to take advantage of quicker shipments for goods, lower processing fees and decreased duties. Note that thanks to this incentive, you can store, process, manipulate and integrate your international goods with your domestic goods before paying duties.
Interested in making Memphis an even better place to live and work? See if you qualify for incentives associated with developing commercial real estate throughout the Central Business Improvement District and surrounding areas. Thanks to the PILOT (Payment-In-Lieu-of Tax) program, your taxes will freeze for a period of time during the pre-development stage. To be eligible, your new construction or site improvements must be at least 60 percent of the total cost of the project.
Other state tax incentives for which businesses in Memphis can qualify include the Jobs Tax Credit, which gives you $4,500 per job created, and the Industrial Machinery Tax Credit, which covers 1 percent to 10 percent of industrial businesses’ qualifying machine purchases. To maximize your financial standing, it’s a good idea to look further into sales and use tax exemptions and sales tax reductions for which your Memphis business may qualify.
There’s a lot to offer Memphis entrepreneurs here in Tennessee. If you’re planning to found or move a business here, now’s a great time to do so!

]]>The post A 10 step guide to starting a business in Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>One of the best cities in Tennessee to start a business is Memphis. Here’s a helpful go-to guide outlining the steps you need to take to start a business in our city.
Wondering how to start a business in Memphis? Begin by coming up with business ideas that you’re passionate about. Do research to see if there is a demand for the type of company you want to start and to determine whether there are enough potential clients out there to make your business a success. Once you pinpoint which idea has the most potential, move forward to Step 2.
A smart business plan is what a successful company is built upon. You should ask yourself what will make your product unique and how you will attract customers. Consider people you may need to hire and professionals you should connect with, then calculate the profits you need to make to break even and identify where you will get your funding.
You will increase your credibility and be protected from personal liability by registering your business as a limited liability company (LLC). LLCs are easy to set up and manage, and they provide superior tax breaks compared to other business entities—especially in Memphis.
If you plan to hire employees or open a business bank account, you will need to obtain a Tax ID number. Be aware of important tax laws, such as those pertaining to registering for sales tax and providing unemployment insurance on behalf of any employees you hire.
To build your credibility and simplify accounting, it is a good idea to use a dedicated business bank account and credit card for any and all business transactions. Now that you’ve obtained a Tax ID number as detailed in Step 4, it’s time to set up your company’s accounts.
Invest in quality accounting software to make accounting fast and easy. Downloading your bank and credit card transactions will help you track your performance and make things easier when filing annual taxes.
You will need to obtain the required business permits and/or licenses to operate your new business. Be sure you are complying with federal, state and local government regulations.
Purchasing business insurance is necessary to manage your risk and focus on developing your business. Consider general liability insurance and professional liability insurance. In Memphis, if you have five or more employees, you are required to have workers’ compensation insurance.
To ensure your company is a success, you’ll want to build a convincing brand experience that will drive customer devotion. Truly think about the core values that drive your business and what your enterprise stands for, then incorporate these aspects into your marketing and day-to-day operations.
Being active online allows you the opportunity to introduce yourself to customers and build credibility. With a web presence, you are not restricted to a customer base within the physical proximity of your shop’s location. When approached strategically, internet content marketing can be the doorway to success.

]]>The post Memphis – The newest startup hub for business beyond the Silicon Valley? appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>When you think of business and technology centers, Memphis may not be the first city that comes to mind. We are Memphis, after all, and music, blues, and BBQ are what we’ve long been known for. But Memphis is also home to some of the most cutting-edge technology-driven medical facilities in the country, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Methodist University Hospital.
Memphis isn’t a stranger to massive entrepreneurial success either. In fact, a once small company called FedEx found its start in the heart of Memphis and now brings in an estimated $45 billion in annual revenue. All Memphis entrepreneurs may not quite see that type of success themselves, but make no mistake – Memphis is built for business.
Memphis is where originality and soul converge to create change and as the power of Memphis is in its people, there’s no better place to shake things up. We are a city of doers, dreamers and believers. We create, we invent, we experiment. This “Memphis state of mind” is one reason why Memphis has been and continues to be the home of an impressive range successful of startups.
The simple truth is that startups often fail, which will likely have as much to do with money as with anything else. Just a couple of years ago, Memphis made the list of cities with the lowest startup costs, meaning entrepreneurs who set up shop in Memphis have an advantage over those in many other urban areas across the country.
Memphis may not be known as a startup hub quite yet, but a rising number of people are learning that our city is diverse, innovative and invested in its people. Not only does this make Memphis a wonderful home for everyone, it provides an amazing opportunity for the next great startup.
No, Memphis isn’t Silicon Valley, but it could be the perfect headquarters for your business.

]]>Being an entrepreneur is a challenging and competitive career path, as becoming a business owner—especially as a minority business owner—is no small feat. From overcoming barriers to entry to managing finances, there are plenty of obstacles along the way . You’ll learn quickly that an entrepreneurial road can be a lonely one, and not everyone will agree with your mindset. Some people may even think your ambitions are crazy! With this in mind, it is essential to have the right resources at your disposal.
Enter the 800 Initiative to empower minority-owned and -operated businesses. The program targets the 800+ African American-owned businesses in Memphis that are between the startup and full-scale phases, and the program goal is geared specifically towards assisting minority businesses and increasing equity within Memphis economy. The goal is to increase local minority-owned business revenue by $50 million by the year 2023. Some of the services, tools and resources for entrepreneurs through the 800 Initiative program include:
Building upon the $500,000 provision from Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland’s budget to kickstart the 800 Initiative, major companies have made financial commitments to the program. These include a four-year, $1 million commitment by FedEx and leading corporate partners Epicenter, Christian Brothers University and Start Co. The program is hosted by the Office of Business Diversity & Compliance at the Universal Life building and will be spearheaded by Start Co., with more companies added as resources in later stages of the program. Moreover, Christian Brothers University is soon launching the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which will offer educational courses in entrepreneurship, learning credits and job training for students.
This program is certainly a step in the right direction in terms of adding necessary resources and tools for minority entrepreneurs, a cause near and dear to many Memphians within the business community. Within the first fiscal year of his term, the mayor was able to increase the amount of contracting dollars given to minority-driven businesses by 12 percent, reaching a total of 21 percent. There is still much work to be done, however, as a recent disparity study showed that over 90 percent of the $36.5 billion generated by privately owned, Memphis-based businesses is produced by white-owned enterprises. The 800 Initiative offers the power to change those numbers and level the playing field for minority-owned businesses.

]]>Some of the best guides to help you launch your own “Made in Memphis” startup are maintained by the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce, which is personally invested in cultivating local entrepreneurship and has members in its ranks who made the entrepreneurial journey themselves.
Getting off to a good start can make all the difference, so utilize the following tools to find your way as a Memphis entrepreneur.
The Entrepreneurship Powered Innovation Center, or EPICenter, is one such valuable resource that the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce has made available to those looking to start their own businesses. As the virtual hub of the chamber’s entrepreneurship movement, it is dedicated to helping Memphian professionals change not only the Bluff City, but the world.
Since 2014, EPICenter has been the point of connection between entrepreneurs with what can be very disparate interests, with the understanding that any startup that calls Memphis home plays a part in growing our community into something bigger and better.
To that end, the EPICenter provides support to all, acting as a single point of accountability that measures and celebrates how Memphis startups foster growth—not only of our economy, but of our city at large.
Beyond that, EPICenter also focuses on making sure the necessary infrastructure is in place for Memphis startups to grow and flourish. The organization is focused on delivering programs that serve a broad base, filling the gaps in the startup ecosystem and pulling in necessary resources from outside our community.
All startups begin by procuring a business license, and the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce provides assistance with this through the Memphis Smart Start program.
Through Smart Start, everything that businesses need to become licensed by both the city and the state is available via an online platform created in partnership with the City of Memphis and Shelby County. All you need to do is input information about the type of business you are looking to start, and a list of the necessary steps will be provided along with the relevant contacts, links and instructions.
Along with licensing assistance, Memphis Smart Start also offers a number of resources that entrepreneurs interested in founding their own Memphis startups will find handy, from small business development center programs to information specific to different types of startups.
The City of Memphis has made a conscious effort to increase the chances of startup success, which is part of the reason that the Bluff City is so often cited as one of the premier environments in which entrepreneurs can find success.

]]>The post Downtown Memphis may see a neighborhood grocery store soon! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>The one thing downtown Memphis is lacking is a grocery store, but that may be about to change, as the Memphis Business Journal recently reported that the wheels are in motion to build a grocery store downtown by the end of 2018.
Residents of downtown Memphis have been dreaming of a convenient grocery-shopping option for ages, and that dream might just come true in the form of a 25,000-square-foot building owned by Archer Custom Builders and located just a block off South Main St.
Company owner Tom Archer has been working and investing in the South Main neighborhood for decades, and he shares the widespread opinion that a local grocery store is just what the downtown area needs.
“I’m on a mission to get a grocery store down here,” Archer told the Memphis Business Journal. “If you need something, that’s where you’ll go.”
Archer has been reaching out to grocery companies to land a tenant for the property, which is located at 136 Webster Ave. If none of the big chains take the bait, he told the Journal that he’s more than willing to take charge and open a grocery store himself, with a plan to “start small and build to the need.”
And considering the recent developments in downtown Memphis, the need for a local grocery store certainly exists—to say nothing of the growing number of families calling the South Main neighborhood home. Archer plans to finish developing the Webster Ave. building by the end of 2018, a feat that would no doubt please many locals and boost Memphis’ already-growing downtown.
The announcement of a potential future grocery store in the heart of Memphis comes amid a flurry of recent activity in the revitalized downtown area. The Memphis Trolley recently made its much-lauded return to service after a four-year absence, and plans for a four-star hotel and luxury apartment building at One Beale are back on track.
Memphis is often celebrated for its past, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the city’s future is shaping up to be just as exciting. Be sure to check back for more updates on downtown Memphis!

]]>In addition to Memphis’s popular Beale Street and BBQ locations, this constant growth is also being felt in other areas, including technology, the arts, agriculture and food services. It helps that Memphis is uniquely placed to offer a low cost of living, a taste of Southern hospitality and a good quality of life.
To learn about the history of local entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, look no further than the National Civil Rights Museum, which details the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in both the country and our city. Indeed, the entrepreneurial spirit of Memphis is closely intertwined with this history, with a strong sense of community and an understanding of the past, present and future of the city.
If you’re looking for both a tasty meal and a quick history lesson, start off at the Four Way Restaurant in South Memphis. This flourishing establishment has served iconic leaders and musicians, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., B.B. King, and many others.
Memphis has long been known for its strong artistic culture, so it’s no surprise that entrepreneurs in the arts are thriving in these parts. Their success can be seen everywhere from theaters and ballet companies to museums and private exhibitions.
Ballet Memphis serves as just one example. Founded by fourth generation Memphian Dorothy Gunther Pugh, it’s embedded with richly symbolic art and has made ballet available to a larger portion of the population. The Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis is another popular art center that combines actors and the community through rich and meaningful performances.
The food scene in Memphis is poised for explosion. Beyond offering the classic BBQ selections that Memphis is known for, entrepreneurs have opened businesses that offer everything from traditional American cuisine to a taste of global flavors. Whether you’re seeking Italian wine and bites or fusion food trucks, you needn’t leave Memphis!
For a taste of Southern excellence, try out the New Orleans-infused Second Line Restaurant, and don’t sleep on Memphis Black Restaurant Week—an annual event that highlights the creative flavor of African American Memphis restauranteurs.
Our city’s unique location makes it both a commercial and financial hub, which is ideal for entrepreneurs looking to start or grow businesses of all kinds. If that sounds good to you, why not hop on the bandwagon and take advantage of our city’s booming economy to bring your business to life?

In addition to being a hub of entertainment for locals and tourists alike, the city of Memphis is home to a flourishing business community. There are numerous entrepreneurial opportunities to be found here, including but by no means limited to the areas of music and the arts, food and dining, and professional services.
It’s hard not to associate Memphis with Elvis Presley, but our city’s music scene extends far beyond The King. For an up-close-and-personal glimpse at just how central live music is to the daily lives of many in Memphis, look no further than the bars and restaurants on Beale Street and elsewhere—not to mention the music festivals held in these parts throughout the year.
Not to be outdone, the Memphis art sector is also expanding, with galleries popping up across the city. In fact, Shelby County’s nonprofit arts industry accounts for nearly $200 million in annual spending and sustains the equivalent of more than 6,000 local jobs. The arts are more than just a hobby or attraction here in Memphis – it’s a creative economy.
Memphis is known far and wide for its BBQ, but make no mistake—our city’s culinary offerings aren’t at all limited to deliciously seasoned ribs. In fact, the restaurants and eateries around here offer a wide variety of cuisines, each more mouthwatering than the last. Whether you’re looking to drop by a food truck for a quick yet satisfying bite or enjoy a sit-down meal prepared by an award-winning chef at a high-end restaurant, Memphis has you covered.
A growing city like Memphis doesn’t simply run on autopilot. Rather, it’s the hustle of the locals that keeps things chugging along smoothly across a wide variety of fields, including accounting, legal assistance, printing, construction, teaching, cleaning, landscaping… the list goes on.
Memphis is always growing, which makes it the ideal place to launch a startup company. Whatever your area of expertise may be, our city will welcome your entrepreneurial spirit.

]]>Every year, Fortune magazine names the 100 Best Companies to Work For, and we are so proud of the organizations that made the 2018 list! If you’re looking for a job in Memphis, you might want to hit up one of these:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Ranked at No. 57, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital employs 4,355 people in Memphis. When asked about the high corporate morale, employees pointed to personable leaders and an understanding of how important their jobs are. Moreover, many reported genuinely looking forward to work every day, and noted that St. Jude’s mission—helping children with serious illness—makes the hospital an incredibly gratifying place to work. Other benefits of working for St. Jude include subsidized childcare, an on-site gym and a strict non-discrimination policy.
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare employs 11,402 people at several locations in and around Memphis, and was ranked at No. 91 on this year’s list—up from No. 92 last year. Employees were quick to point to the “extraordinary” culture as one of the qualities that make Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare such a great place to work, along with the organization’s commitment to diversity (minorities make up more than 46 percent of the workforce). This healthcare company had 690 job openings as of January 2018, so step right up.
FedEx
Headquartered in Memphis, FedEx was bumped up from No. 99 on last year’s list to No. 94 in 2018. The company employs 281,933 people worldwide, with perks including college tuition reimbursement, fully paid sabbaticals and health insurance for part-timers. In addition to FedEx being a great place to work, many of its employees take pride in the company’s dedication to charitable causes. Did you know FedEx has committed to donate $200 million to 200 communities by 2020?
Baker Donelson
Since the Baker Donelson law firm was founded in 1888, it has branched out considerably. It now employs nearly 1,500 people in offices all over the Southeast—but it still proudly has its headquarters in Memphis. Baker Donelson took the No. 96 spot on this year’s list, with employees citing generous salaries, generous perks and total trust in management as some of their favorite things about the job. Notably, some also described an atmosphere in which “competition and rivalry do not exist.” Sounds good to us!
Memphis offers all the benefits of a big city with the personality of a small town. It’s this combination of a business-friendly attitude and a family-friendly philosophy that has made it a hub for major companies, as well as a destination for those who want to start their own businesses. Here’s to your Memphis enterprise being named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For next year!

]]>The post 5 Memphis based startups to watch in 2018 appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>An entrepreneurial spirit has always been a big part of what makes Memphis tick. Piggly Wiggly—the first grocery chain in America—was founded here in 1916, and our city continues to be a place where new ideas take root and flourish more than a century later. You don’t have to look far to see unique, innovative companies getting their start in Memphis every day. These are a just a few that we really think you should be watching.
This Memphis-based real estate startup has been picking up speed since it was founded in 2015, thanks to a concept that could revolutionize the process of buying and selling your home. HelloHome allows you to avoid costly commissions by connecting you with real estate agents who will sell your home for a flat rate of $3,500 (instead of the traditional 3-percent commission). It also offers a free platform to connect home buyers to real estate agents, providing a more cost-effective option for buyers and sellers alike. Moreover, HelloHome is the first—and, so far, the only—female-founded and female-led real estate tech startup.
Preteckt is using machine learning technology to change the trucking industry. This Memphis startup manufactures hardware that connects to a big rig’s diagnostic port, logs every second of sensor data and transmits this information to the user via a cloud-based service. The ability to detect maintenance problems weeks in advance translates to on-time deliveries for customers and major savings for trucking companies.
Somavac creates medical devices to help people heal at home after surgeries like mastectomies, and they have developed a tool that drastically improves on the current standard of care for at-home, post-op drainage. Dr. Esra Roan left a tenured position as a professor at the University of Memphis to become a first-time entrepreneur, and she’s been incredibly successful. She and her business partner, Josh Herwig, are graduates of ZeroTo510 and have attracted investment from angel investors.
Billed as the “Norton of ad-tech,” Dev/Con Detect is an ad-tech security company that provides “digital revenue protection through patent-protected technology and expert teams.” If that sounds like convoluted cyberspeak, here’s the premise in a nutshell: cybersecurity software that eliminates the kinds of advertising fraud that cost advertisers and publishers billions of dollars every year. It’s not hard to see why Dev/Con Detect has been receiving a lot of attention since it got started in 2016.
Memphis has been a hotbed of musical innovation for decades, from the blues pioneers of the 1920s to the legendary Sun Records era of the ‘50s—and we can’t forget today’s thriving indie scene. Soundways offers musical innovation of another kind, developing technology that changes the way music is recorded, transmitted and heard. Since its founding in 2016, Soundways has been a company led by audio engineers whose only goal is to serve the music.
There are a lot of reasons why Memphis is an alluring destination for anyone looking to start a new business. The spirit of entrepreneurship is woven into the fabric of the city, along with a low cost of living, city initiatives that encourage small business growth and an indefinable “cool” factor that’s impossible to match. Memphis is also one of the cities with the lowest startup costs in America, according to SmartAsset. This all adds up to a city that thrives on new ideas—and we hope yours is next!

]]>Ranking the top cities
In a recent study by Blacktech Week, Memphis dethroned Atlanta and took the No. 1 spot on a ranking of the best metropolitan areas for black-owned companies after coming in at No. 3 last time around. Montgomery, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Savannah rounded out the rest of the top 5.
The study used data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Kauffman Foundation’s 2017 Index of Startup Activity to identify the cities in which black-owned businesses are thriving. The results showed that compared to the Atlanta metro area, Memphis has a lower unemployment rate and a higher percentage of black-owned businesses, as well as a comparable average annual revenue.
Why Memphis?
As Memphians, we know we’ve been putting in work to make progress for minority entrepreneurs. But outsiders tend to ask, what is it that makes our city special for entrepreneurs? As it turns out, a lot of things.
Statistics can tell us a lot, but we think Memphis has something else going for it. Call it soul, spirit, grit or determination—it’s that culture of hustle and hard work that the folks who call this city home know all too well.
Come see us sometime and experience Memphis culture for yourself! And if you’re thinking of starting a business here, be sure to check out these incentives for those seeking to locate or expand their business in Memphis.

]]>In recent years, premier Memphis-area charity Church Health has stepped up to assist residents in leading healthier lives. Church Health’s push to promote a healthy diet through kitchen teaching sessions falls in line with its larger goal of providing healthcare services to the working uninsured.
How the classes work
Fueled by a focus on Church Health’s aforementioned core mission, the Teaching Kitchen aims to instill proper meal preparation skills in the community. When Church Health founder and CEO Dr. Scott Morris launched the operation, he did so with the vision of promoting a well-balanced lifestyle through medical care, proper nutrition, a vibrant spiritual life and more. Today, Church Health is among the top volunteer organizations in Memphis that emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Sharing tips for a healthy lifestyle
The Teaching Kitchen at Church Health has expanded in popularity over recent years, and now holds classes at the Crosstown Concourse (formerly the Sears distribution center). This large facility provides enough space and resources for Church Health nutrition professionals to expand upon the theme of using food as a medicine.
Memphis residents may be advised to reduce carbs or eat more protein—but how does this translate into an actual meal on the table? Church Health is one of the few Memphis charities that provides practical nutritional classes for locals to implement in their own homes.
In addition, Church Health works with Tulane University medical students, teaching them how to communicate food benefits and value to their patients.
The Teaching Kitchen runs one day a week for a six-week period. During their training, students work in teams to learn essential cooking skills, optimal use of ingredients and recipes that have the potential to make a big difference to their health over time.
Church Health also maintains a network of health coaches, doctors and providers who work with patients and students at the Teaching Kitchen on an ongoing basis.
Effects on the community
Because the Teaching Kitchen is open to the whole community, it has had a widespread positive influence on the local population. Church Health breaks down the economic barriers often associated with living a healthy lifestyle by using simple and accessible nutritional programs.

]]>The post Memphis “Shark Tank” Winners Launch Brick-and-Mortar Business appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>The past two years have been quite an adventure for Memphis sisters Madison Star and Mallory Iyana, the mini moguls who struck a deal on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” an Emmy Award-winning reality show where aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to “sharks” — some of the country’s best-known business magnates.
The sharks – among them moguls Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Bethenny Frankel and Richard Branson — search for the best business ideas from aspiring entrepreneurs and select those businesses they want to back, using their own money. Contestants must deliver a pitch to convince the sharks to invest in their business. In return, the sharks receive a return on their investment.
The tween sisters’ company, Angels and Tomboys, LLC, which makes fun-scented natural handmade body lotions and sprays for their peers, had already sold more than $50,000 in products, thanks to social media promotion, grassroots marketing, and word of mouth, prior to the girls’ television appearance.
But following their enthusiastic pitch on an episode of Shark Tank’s eighth season, which included some song and dance, they received a major boost when Dallas Maverick’s owner Mark Cuban and Daymond John, founder, and CEO of apparel company FUBU, decided to take a gamble on the girls. The sharks, impressed with Angels and Tomboys’ already strong sales record, offered them a $60,000 investment deal.
“Throughout the process and the pitch, we kept a positive attitude and were confident that we’d make a deal,” said Madison. “Our brand serves a great purpose and we knew that one of the sharks would see that, and in our case, two amazing sharks saw and agreed that our brand was relevant and needed. We were and are still very much excited about landing a deal with both Mark and Daymond.”
The girls’ business idea stemmed from their desire for body care products that didn’t smell like mom’s. They wanted to create something subtler and less flowery that would appeal to tweens.
With the full support of their mom, Viara Iyadunni, Madison and Mallory developed a line of handmade, vegan-friendly body lotions and sprays using natural ingredients like shea butter and aloe. Their products are also paraben free so parents can feel good about safe use on delicate young skin.
“My girls have always both been very ambitious and caring young ladies,” said Viara, who refers to herself as the girls’ “momager.” “They are sharp to know that if they had a desire for age-appropriate body care products, there must be other girls their ages who felt the same way. So, not only is the development of their products a problem solved for their own personal use, but they provided a solution to a problem for girls all over the world. They are agents of change and I’m very proud of them.”
Angels and Tomboys’ lotions and potions have fun names descriptive of their delicious scents, including Cherry Star Glam, Watermelon Funk, and Frozen Hot Chocolate. The girls believe that when you smell good, you feel good. Each bottle is wrapped in a label featuring its own cartoon character, designed by the girls.
The name “Angels and Tomboys” reflects the girls’ personalities. Madison, 12, is the “angel” and Mallory, 10, is the “tomboy.” The products are made to appeal to all types of girls, from bookworms to ballerinas to basketball players. Their motto: “All Girls Are Created Equally Different.”
Over the past couple of years, these Memphis-made girls have been featured in Newsday, HuffPost, Black Enterprise, Jet Magazine, and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, and have been guests on the daytime talk show “The Real.”
Madison and Mallory have managed to operate and grow their business while maintaining their status as honor roll students and making time to give back to the community. In lieu of birthday gifts, Madison and Mallory collect donations each year for their Memphis neighbors in need. To date, the girls have collected hundreds of coats and shoes for women’s shelters. They’ve also launched a nonprofit called Girlhood Academy, which aims to combat bullying and encourages self-esteem and self-respect. They also donate personal hygiene products to girls in impoverished areas.
Last year, these blossoming community leaders hosted the National Civil Rights Museum’s Student Forum Freedom Awards, honoring Rev. Bernice King, Hugh Masekela, and Morris Dee.
Angels and Tomboys have been selling products online, through the company’s website, Zulily, and Amazon, and at pop-up shops and tradeshows. But now the dynamic duo is preparing to open their own brick-and-mortar shop in Memphis’ Binghampton neighborhood. The building, located at 3078 Summer Avenue, has two retail spaces. The neighboring space will be occupied by their aunt, Omi Ogunwale El, a businesswoman and philanthropist who owns Green Goddess Vegan Foods. Clearly, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and girl power run in the family. Angels and Tomboys will have their grand opening during the first week of June, and Green Goddess Vegan foods will have theirs on may 19th.

]]>The post Annual Women’s Success Summit comes back to Memphis! appeared first on We Are Memphis.
]]>Memphis’s status as one of the elite metropolitan cities in the United States is quickly gaining momentum, and yet it is still one the most affordable places to live. Programs like the Greater Memphis Alliance for a Competitive Workforce (GMACW) have been working to get the next generation ready to join the workforce, and Memphis’ location and logistical advantages have led a number of the nation’s best companies to put down roots here. A nationally recognized municipal parks system featuring 165 green spaces hasn’t hurt either.
One of the main reasons that Memphis finds itself being mentioned among the elite cities in America over the last decade is an increased awareness of the need to create opportunities for women and minorities. As recently as 2015, Forbes magazine named Tennessee the top state for female entrepreneurs, and Memphis alone saw a 116 percent increase in female-owned businesses from 2007 to 2012. That trend has continued recently, with the American Express State of Women-Owned Business Report showing women in Memphis are starting their own businesses at five times the national rate.
The emphasis Memphis has placed on creating opportunities for female entrepreneurs has clearly proven beneficial, and the ninth annual RISE 2018 Women’s Success Summit is part of that push.
This year’s event will be facilitated by Melissa Kaye, managing director of the Memphis chapter of the eWomen Network. The summit will focus on helping female entrepreneurs discover the key to unleashing their abilities to found and grow successful businesses. Attendees will learn immediate and tangible breakthrough strategies that will change not only their approach to business, but their approach to life.
The Memphis chapter of the eWomen Network is one of 118 across America, empowering over 500,000 women nationally to reach their fullest potential. Every year, the eWomen Network conducts more than 2,000 events that are routinely recognized as some of the top conferences of their kind.
RISE 2018 Women’s Success Summit will welcome guest speaker Sandra Yancey, a best-selling author and award-winning international entrepreneur who has been inspiring women to reach their fullest potential for over 20 years. Her crusade to help 1 million women entrepreneurs each achieve $1 million in annual revenue will be on full display when she takes the stage this spring.
The event will be held at the Racquet Club of Memphis on Wednesday, May 16, and will begin with an informal networking session at 10:15 a.m. You can find complete registration information for exhibitors and attendees on the eWomen Network Memphis chapter website.

LITE works with over 2,000 youth in 1-day workshops and then empowers 75 youth a year through a pipeline from the age of 17 to the age of 25. LITE believes that creating wealth starts with teaching students how to become entrepreneurs.
Students begin their LITE journey in high school, learning 21st-century skills via the execution of an entrepreneurial idea. The initial six-month program introduces business concepts through community challenges. Students develop their ideas with help from a business mentor, then bring these ideas to fruition by developing funding sources.
While in college, LITE students are matched with a paid summer internship in a high-growth industry. This allows the students to network with established industry professionals, learning the ropes while they build their business prototypes.
Following college graduation, students are matched with high-growth business markets and receive coaching through the startup phase. Finally, they are provided access to capital providers to make their dreams and the dreams of their communities become reality. Students remain in the program until the age of 25, at which point they should aim to have either launched their startup or acquired a high-wage job that is helping them build personal wealth.
Since the program’s inception, more than 2,000 youth have been empowered by the lessons that LITE teaches. Of the students that went through the 8-year pipeline, 90 percent have shown extreme growth in career skills and 85 percent are on track to graduate college. In addition:
LITE has thrived in Memphis thanks to a number of community sponsors that assist in the identification and recruitment of talented students, including:

]]>Whether we’re talking about community-based startups or new businesses with high-growth potential, Memphis entrepreneurs have a friend in the form of Entrepreneurship-Powered Innovation Center, better known as EPICenter Memphis.
The non-profit organization, located in Co-Work Memphis in the heart of the city’s Cooper-Young neighborhood, helps entrepreneurs conceive, launch and scale their businesses.
EPICenter has become a hub of the Greater Memphis entrepreneurial movement by connecting existing entrepreneurs and those who want to launch a business with helpful partner organizations and resources across the region.
When you step into their welcoming, colorful space, you immediately feel the energy and excitement of connectivity and creativity happening in the Bluff City. You’re surrounded not only by the supportive, passionate EPICenter team, but by Memphis creatives from all backgrounds and walks of life, working together to enrich the city by infusing its economy with new business models for a sustainably robust future.
The organization and its partners provide programs, workshops, office hours, networking events, co-working spaces and more to ensure everyone from tech startups to makers and artisans to community based small businesses across a wealth of industries and stages of growth have what they need to prosper. EPICenter also connects Memphis-based entrepreneurs to companies and individuals interested in supporting them as customers, investors or mentors.
Memphis is a city of ideas – from our pioneering place in music history and status as a continuing creative force in that field to our innovation in the fields of healthcare, medical device development, agriculture and logistics.
As Memphians say, we hustle – we grit and we grind. That applies both to our beloved basketball teams and our entrepreneurial ecosystem.
“Memphis has a gritty and innovative culture, which enables an entrepreneurial movement that’s catalyzing transformational growth here,” said Leslie Smith, president and CEO of EPICenter. “While the history of entrepreneurship runs deep — from Elvis, Sun Studios, and Stax, to Holiday Inn, AutoZone, and FedEx — we’re seeing new technologies in agriculture, logistics, medical devices, home services, and social innovation succeed and grow roots here. Beyond technology, our artists, designers, makers, chefs, musicians, and shopkeepers around Memphis are the heart and soul of our creative small business community. Most importantly, however, Memphis intentionally supports and attracts entrepreneurs who reflect the diversity of our city, and we are a more vibrant and innovative community because of that.”
EPICenter and its partners – which include Start Co., The Memphis Chamber, Memphis BioWorks Foundation and the Black Business Association of Memphis — share a common goal of creating a robust and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Memphis to service the Mid-South region. The organization hopes to help create 500 companies and 1,000 entrepreneurs by 2024, through four core areas of support: idea creation, development, funding and growth.
To date, they’ve served more than 250 entrepreneurs, helped create or incubate at least 116 companies, which have created more than 150 jobs, and helped raise more than $25 million in capital.
EPICenter Memphis will offer a wealth of opportunities for budding local entrepreneurs in 2018. Their 2017 events included angel investment mixers, mixers for entrepreneurs to get to know, collaborate with and support one another, educational sessions called “So You Think You Want To Be An Entrepreneur,” and “Rock Star Office Hours,” which bring in experts in the fields of public relations, social media and accounting for free one-on-one sessions to guide founders.
If you’re considering starting a business and need a launchpad, EPICenter can be your co-pilot. Give them a shout, check out their wealth of workshops and networking opportunities, and get involved in building a brighter, innovative economic future for Memphis. Definitely follow them on Facebook.
