Operation Safe Community -- www.operationsafecommunity.org --is a joint initiative by law enforcement, government and business leadership to make Memphis/Shelby County one of the safest communities of its size in the country by 2012.
Sponsored by Memphis Tomorrow, the initiative is spearheaded by Mayor Herenton, Mayor Wharton, U.S. Attorney David Kustoff, District Attorney Bill Gibbons, Director Larry Godwin, Sheriff Mark Luttrell, and supported by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and University of Memphis Center for Community Criminology and Research.
Memphis Police and Sheriff Department Accreditation
On the advice and counsel of our partner organization, the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission, we have determined that the effort likely to have the greatest impact on quality of law enforcement would be for the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff undergo the very rigorous accreditation process by CALEA, the national standard bearer for law enforcement excellence. Today, only ten percent of law enforcement agencies in the nation are accredited.
Thankfully, we have willing partners for quality in Mayor Herenton, Director Godwin, and Sheriff Luttrell, and have provided financial support and encouragement to support the departments in becoming successfully accredited.
Congratulations to MPD for successfully achieving accreditation this spring!
